Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!

Yes, but instead of sparking to get it, you'd be better to run in, spark left, wall-jump up, through the door, collect stuff from further on (it's all one big dead end), and collect that on your way back through, since you're already up on the ledge anyway, and you can arc out and round the barrier there, so you're next to the switch. You can then jump across to it.

But then you have to spend time shooting the switch. If you get the part via shinespark, you're high enough to just space jump over to the door anyway, and on the way back you can just run through the room.

EDIT: 6:05:47 100%, but I did a lot of dicking around trying to find the optimal places to shinespark while running through hallways, etc.

In my opinion, if you have the opportunity it's almost always better to shinespark than not, unless the distance is really really short. Since it takes a couple seconds to skid to a halt if you reach speed booster speed anyway, it's about the same as the recovery time from shinesparking.

I disagree on that for the simple reason that in some areas you can chain shinesparks together (example: The opening part of the game/post-game) quicker if you skid.

What I'm saying is that if you shinespark, while you gain some distance quickly, in some areas you could stop then immediately start to charge up another speed boost.

Time bomb set get out fast!

Finished off my first playthrough last night. Clear time... 17:17:17!

Tonight I started a new game to go for speed. Wound up playing for three hours. This game was fun the first time, but its replay value is through the roof. Now that I know what I'm doing, I laugh at the parts that gave me trouble before, and skipping cutscenes lets me really sink my teeth into the gameplay.

Of course, every time I pass one of those power bomb "doors" this time around, I shudder...

I'm currently doing 2 things, planning my 100% speedrun, and continuing my Escape Run, which reached a new improvement that is both awesome and a kick in the teeth: 2:34:98. (Insert long line of curse words here)

Having to speed boost run up the slope three times to get the one missile in Biosphere is my only gripe with the route, so a route where you go forward along that path instead of backward would be preferable, but to do that you end up having to walk down to the diffusion beam area instead of taking the bomb-cannon shortcut up from there. It all depends on which is faster. Or if a trick could be found to abuse the space jump to go up and down the section of the slope where the super missile door is to shoot it and grapple much faster, that would be best.
A third option would be to take the secret path from the Seeker room to the Diffusion area, then go back to the Seeker room again. Then go forward along the path to the slope, thus only having to climb back up it once. In the waterfall room, space jump/shinespark to the energy part, then go in the tunnel and go backwards to the three-way nav room. From there head to the Kihunter nest and on to the rest of the sector. My gripe with this is having to climb the long spiral path around the tree before the Kihunter nest, although if it can be shinesparked up that route may be the best one. The west half of Biosphere is so interconnected that there's lots of potential paths. It's very messy.

Another thing is in Cryosphere, whether to go forwards around the map or backwards. Forwards covers less distance total, but you have to climb up the long slope with the platforms. Backwards, you can just jump down it, but you have to backtrack past the main elevator. With the space jump, climbing the platforms along the slope goes pretty quickly, so I think forwards is probably a bit faster. Another possibility is to just not go up the slope and long elevator and backtrack through the main part of the sector from the forklift boss room to the tunnel behind the main elevator, but I think that would be slower. These are just my estimates, I haven't actually timed each route so I can't be sure.

Pyrosphere, I think my route is definitely best. One thing that could be cut is the missile in the room after the third fight with the Seeker bug. Can it be shinesparked to on the first trip? I've tried, a lot, but I either slam into the fence or hit just below the platform with the missile.

Funny note about the Queen there. Makes me think of one battle I had against her where she ran into a corner and simply sat there with her back to the room. This was on the second phase of the battle as well, so it worked out for me in the end.

Slow? That's pretty fast for a first playthrough (mine was 48% in 8:20).

Helluva time, Serris! The fastest one posted so far is Paraxade's 3:53:45 with 8%; your time is so close that I'm betting any% and low% really will be equivalent for this game.

Will speedruns for this game be expected to go up to the first end of the game or the second? I can see a case for it either way.

I think it should be all the way through the second ending, since that's the real end of the game, even if the credits roll earlier. Also, since 100% runs will obviously have to be through the second ending, any% runs should be as well simply for comparison's sake.

There are two Accel Charges and Energy Tanks close to the route that could maybe save a bit of time for any%. Low% is rather similar to Hard, but allows for riskier strategies and saves after the credits so the in-game timer can be used. The time I posted is for the first ending since the endgame is just bonus content and I don't see a reason to do it outside 100%.

Welp, now I feel stupid. My second normal run was 4:15 to Ending 1, 4:35 to Ending 2 at 17%. I got 4:20 to Ending 2 last time. For runs, both are fine by me, as well as 100%, hard mode and the escape sequence.

My second playthrough results- this time in hard mode.
I got 4:30 h at the last save point before the metroid queen fight - I died two times during the battle, so I am not sure what time I got at the very end...I don't remember if your final time is shown during the credits - I skipped them.

Is this time after you beat the queen or after going back? I'm currently running a 3% and I'm very close to the end. I'm at where I run to Sector 0, with a time of 3:30 so far.

Alright, 3rd play through, 3% run. Completed in 4:37:32. It said I was at the Main Sector when I checked my time. I skipped like 5 different scenes before reseting to check my time. Does everyone else check their time here? Or is there a way to check it right after the MB scene? Like for example, reset right after you see the credits roll?
