Those last two sentences pretty much sum up my feelings of the game and is the main reason I rate the game so highly compared to the rest of the Zelda series. (Other than the fact that SS's story may be my favorite in the series, or at least one of the best ones they've had.) There are so many times where the game does things right that the few moments where something isn't up to par can't compete with the times where I love what is happening or what is being asked of me. You also describe why I love the Lanayru region pretty accurately, and it and its second dungeon are easily my favorites of both groups as well.

I have a question though: Did you simply play to the end and defeat the final boss or did you try for 100% first?
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I just went for the end. 100% isn't really my thing in most games and Zelda always makes it kind of a pain. Once I got the Hylian Shield I just bulled straight through to the end.
I typically don't do 100% in Zeldas either, which is why I chose to go back once I finished and finally do that with SS especially after liking it as much as I did. Since all of the side elements are optional parts I don't hold the two terrible minigames against the rest of the game since they're so small in the grand scheme of things, but I know I will likely never do them again. Was wondering what your take on some of that stuff was.

The main storyline/questline and the dungeons were great though, which is what counts most for me when I play Zelda.

My take was essentially, "That doesn't sound very fun, I'll pass!" But that's pretty much what I think about every Zelda minigame. Never really liked them much to be honest.
I typically DO go for 100% in zelda games.  Overall I've found the minigames to be very well made and often addictive.  There are a couple of them that I hate, but that's because they're a little too hard - add the harp game to that list along with the swamp shooting gallery from MM.  I especially love the arrow game on PH, the fishing in OoT, and the octorok shooting gallery in MM.

you're lucky that you didn't do the pumpkin pull, then. holy fuck that was annoying.

What, really? that one was never much trouble for me and I couldn't do shit in the OOT shooting galleries.

heh same here. was the swamp gallery the harder one or was that the town's?
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Swamp was probably the harder one, lots more targets and lots of them moved around. Also one or two that popped up way over to the left and right where you'd never see them. Once you figured those out though it wasn't bad at all.

Heh, that does sound similar to how I've felt about them before, and after playing all of the ones in SS I realized why I had never done 100% in a Zelda game before now. I'd never had interest in them because I don't find them as fun as the main stuff. At first this actually made me lose interest in playing the game after I had defeated the final boss and went back to do them, even though I was still in Zelda mode and wanted to keep playing.

I don't regret doing them this time around for SS though once all was said and done, since there are moments where I enjoyed it such as the character interactions that came with some of them. But I probably won't go for 100% in a Zelda too often in the future, if at all. There's not enough incentive for me to do it if I've already defeated the game without them, although I wonder how much my feelings would change if I was doing all of the side stuff during the course of the main game instead of in one solid block at the end. Because JUST doing side missions and minigames isn't enough to keep me wanting to play for very long.

where you shoot the pumpkins (i was talking to tbob when i said that, if it wasn't clear, i know you got 100%)

Man that was annoying. It wasn't actually that difficult it was the controls that screwed it up. Also why is that the ONLY place in the entire game that the bow doesn't zoom? It screws up the controls and makes the game much harder than it should be.

I got lazy and started cheating the first 400 points by aiming about 1 foot away from Fledge and firing the moment I saw him start throwing the pumpking. The remaining 250 points are annoying though because randomly he throws the pumpkin 60 feet in the air or throws it at the ground making you just want to strangle Fledge with your nunchuck.

Oh lol I did that one once to see what it was, I felt pretty good about walking away from it.

Initially I was trying to do side quests as they came up, but once they stopped feeling worth it very quickly. The bottle from the second one was the best reward you were gonna get and doing more fetch quests is not my idea of a good time when I'm already constantly doing fetch quests for the plot.

yeah it took me a very long time to figure out what worked best for me ... think i ended up trying to shoot each pumpkin at the top of its arc, since they spend the most time at that position and you've got enough time to figure out where they're going to be. still fucking annoying though.
At first I enjoyed the pumpkin tossing one with the bow and was pretty good at it, but then I noticed after a few retries Fledge had decided to be cheap about it and be so random with his tosses that it took me a good amount of tries (More than two dozen? It certainly felt like I was there for a long time) before I scraped by with the 600 score.
Hey, remember when people thought Skyward Sword might be difficult to sequence break?

Especially great news for anyone who hates Scrapper.

haha, wow. can't believe the bit glich still works in ss.

MM swamp shooting being harder than the town shooting gallery? bull. the town shooting is almost impossible and the swamp one is easy. i blame the GC controller's stick since it works bad when you need to move fast but short distances.

for me, SS' biggest control issues were the shield (thanks to the shit accelerometer in the nunchuck. same reason why grapple sucks in mp3) and not using the standard pointer in any of the parts where the standard pointer would have helped (aiming, selecting items, choosing options). they should have given at least the option to use it like in wii sports resort.

also, Fun fun Island should be renamed to HATE HATE Island or FUCK FUCK Island. that place is going to prevent me from doing another 100% for a long time. at least this is the fastest 100% i've done in a Zelda game (i 100%ed all the previous ones i've played years after i beat them the first time)

I am the worst ever at video games and I have literally never failed the town shooting gallery with a GC controller. How the hell?

hm then i guess i suck at unexpected things.
that was the hardest heart piece for me when i did 100% in both the GC collector's edition and VC release (on n64, i do fine)

I've found a method for getting the heart piece at fun-fun island that actually works.  Take note of where the purple spot on the wheel is at precisely the moment that you pass through the final ring, and aim for landing on that spot.  By using this method, I can land on it about one in three tries, and the other two attempts are always very very close. Try it, it totally works.
Really? I abused fun fun island like 3-4 times until I had so much money I didn't know what to do with it. I had already bought every item. IMO the reward actually was overpowered for how easy it was to get and made any other ways to get rupees completely pointless.
Does anyone here play LOZ Skyward Sword with dolphin emulator? I was able to run it in perfect framerate in 1080p with no graphical glitches. Btw, I've beaten this game and I would say that this is one of the best latest Wii game I've ever played, most of other latest Wii titles looks pretty crap. I'll definitely look forward to Wii U.
