bah! all of this complaints are because this game is a new take on the series, with the 3d/2d exploration story driven and all...

then ppl gets insecure about the game, and start to bash it, the same happened with wind waker.

i bet that after 1~2 weeks playing the game, this same guys will say this game is awesome and perfect...

humans don't like change, this is a fact.

No I'm pretty sure those are legitimate concerns. I may like Fusion but that doesn't mean that I want to see more of its style in the series. And all information at this point indicates that Fusion's worst aspects are making a come back for Other M. Video games are not known for their excellent stories and forcing story into an action game is difficult and often a bad idea since the point of an action game is the action part.

The 3d/2d thing is a bit worrying mostly because of the control scheme, 3d movement with a d-pad is not exactly ideal and I'm not entirely convinced that the flip the Wiimote for first person and missiles is actually a good decision, seems like an unnecessary hassle that will bite you in the ass when things get hectic. Seems like they intentionally limited their control options and I can't help but wonder why. The scheme they went with is much more suited for a 2d game.

Also this thing from some of the hands on stuff a few months back:

Thought I saw that "focus" ability in one of the E3 hands-on videos, so it's still there.

And personally, while I may make some comments about things that are different, that doesn't necessarily mean I want to go after the developers for making those changes. With any game series that strives to make adjustments to better itself, the differences are obviously going to be the things fans will notice first and discuss the most since with the things we've seen before we have a good idea on what to expect from them. Anything new or different goes into uncharted territory, and in a way it's only natural to be a little skeptical about those things since we don't know how they'll mesh with what we love about a given series.

In Other M's case, the exploration bit doesn't bother me since I think that's actually a good way to do things. Some game elements are better suited for a more personal experience (first person, as if you're Samus) and if you need to see details that would otherwise be difficult to detect. The fast-paced action sequences and the main exploration aspect are better in third person where we can see things clearer and react quicker to what's around us. (Because obviously being in first person makes it so that we lose about 3/4 of the area we can see otherwise and it's much easier for something to sneak up and strike that way.)

And far as being story driven, I've been saying since the game was first announced that I want to see more about Samus's history and the Metroid universe because I'm interested in it. But for the most part I have to agree with what was just said in that games haven't had the best track record in the story department. (Although I'd argue that we're getting better and some game stories are pretty solid.) I still have hopes that Nintendo will pull it off in the end.

I don't know, I'm probably just rambling at this point. All I'm trying to say is that different =/ bad, it's just that those elements are the only things we can really discuss before the game comes out since we know what to expect from the things that are remaining the same. I may be willing to accept these kinds of drastic changes even to my favorite series if the final game is still enjoyable in the end, but I can't speak for everybody and can understand why others may not be as forgiving. (I will admit that I wasn't always like this with my favorite games, but Metroid especially has a nearly perfect track record in my mind so I'm willing to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt here that they know what they're doing.)

I think I'd enjoy exploring in 3rd person more if it had a camera system more like something like Monster hunter or Zelda. But since they wanted to do the whole side-scrolling thing, I guess that wouldn't work.

Nintendo acts like we don't know anything about the Metroid universe, but the Prime series taught us so much. We know more about the technology and different alien races than we do Samus's personal story, it's true, but the world Retro fleshed out for us is really deep and only contradictory in small ways. I wonder if that's part of what has made the series so appealing, or seem so serious. I know we can look at things and the game will tell us their name, in this new game I mean, but I hope they also include large banks of text about ridiculous tech and species lore. It just made the [first two] prime games so fun, and the more complicated it got the more it stuck to its guns, taking itself totally seriously.
Anyway, has anyone seen anything like this? It was new to Prime so they demo'd it early on, but here I've only seen weird cutscenes cued from looking at things. Fuckin cut scenes, btw, ugh.

All I've seen of scanning so far seems to be, 'scan thing to learn what to shoot it with'. Though maybe those weird RE4 style camera sections that have popped up in the trailers will have more of an info gathering deal, seems like a good place for it. But for the most part I'm guessing the game will only really tell us things in cutscenes just to be lame.

One of the more disappointing things about Corruption, to me, was that they seemed to move away from the sort of pointless 'flavor scans' that were all over the first two. The stupid little memos the pirates would leave around were usually pretty fun and there was all kinds of useless trivia around if you wanted it. But if that's any indication, I wouldn't expect much from Other M as far as scans go. Neutral

Totally disagree. Corruption had plenty of that stuff. a dozen or so per planet, plus the pirate ones and federation ones. what game were you playing?

No, it didn't. At least not to the extent Prime and Echoes did, the unimportant scans in Echoes were pretty much the only good thing about it, every scan in Corruption was lame.

Corruption did have the history of both Bryyo and Elysia, which may be what billy was talking about. But you're right in that it didn't have as much as the first two games from what I remember.

Btw, Other M looks too flashy, I am also not sure what to think about all this automated gameplay and strongly limited looking controls. At least from the look of the vids it seems like the game plays for yourself, only with some reaction/timing-requirements here and there.

And that is one problem with 3D-Metroids, if you try to go for a more realistic style in 3D you can quickly be punished for it. Especially when the game looks too flashy, has washed out textures and lacking environmental detail it wont look pretty convincing or 'authentic'. Overall SM has a more realistic/authentic/serious appeal than Prime because there is much more room to fuck things up when you go 3D.
