Next console's gonna be weird because I think it's a near certainty that it'll use a traditional controller because of the Gamepad's failure to catch on, so is the next console just gonna have to forgo backwards compatibility? I suppose that a future handheld could show both screens, but that would of course not house a Blu-Ray disc drive.

If backwards compatibility is gone, that would explain why they've completely abandoned Wii U, as evidenced by E3.

i don't care about backward compatibility, so i hope so because that means it will cost less to make
Probably the biggest issue with the gamepad is how pricy it is.. I mean ffs they don't even let you buy new ones standalone for some reason
red chamber dream
that's pretty stupid
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
They can still have backwards compatibility no matter what the nx controller is like if they allow you to sync the gamepad to the nx, just like they did with wiimotes. Whether it would be worthwhile to add that expense to the console is another matter.
red chamber dream
ah that's a good point

the fact that the wii u supports wii games is kind of crazy heh, wouldn't be surprised if nintendo continued that
red chamber dream
i'd rather them push for downloadable content though, have their entire back catelog available
The way they've handled Virtual Console is idiotic. They can sell their entire back catalog on one system at next to no cost to them but they only sell very few select games and roll out new ones infrequently? What?
red chamber dream
yeah i don't get it at all

think it used to be that nintendo doesn't get the internet, but they finally seem to be understanding it a little ... i'm hoping with the nx they'll go all in
red chamber dream
it's like they don't want to make money, too

their amiibo situation is the same, with so little stock out there
red chamber dream
the theory seems to be that it's just old school japanese business, some exec makes a decision early on (we're only making x amiibo for the first year) and then everything has to stick to that plan
I've even had cases where I wanted to play some old game and I would've been fine with buying it legitimately on virtual console, but they won't sell it there! It's either wait months for the chance to maybe pay them money to play it, or just find a ROM and play it now, for free.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
Nintendo has proven, time and time again, that they don't want money.

Look at how Microsoft's handling its "Virtual Console" now. I mean, the trickle of games will still be there, but all indications seem to be that it will be significantly faster than Nintendo. And of course, it's free with discs - I doubt current Nintendo would do that with a hypothetical Wii VC. Oh wait, how about those native Wii downloads on Wii U that you still have to pay full price for! And I'm sure with the next console they'll go through the same song and dance again with a small handful of launch VC games with a slow trickle. I don't they'd be stupid enough again to make you rebuy everything, but idk
I still don't really understand why you can't buy Gamecube games on the eshop. They've already made Wii games available and it's been shown that the Wii U is perfectly capable of running GC games via homebrew in Wii mode. Absolutely no reason why Nintendo couldn't do it.

Because they don't want money.

And Nintendo needs to cut it out with their insistence on "perfect" emulation. I really would buy Star Fox or Yoshi's Island again, Nintendo. Really. I would. Even with the minor-est of inaccuracies. I would give you my money. Right to you. Money.
red chamber dream
eh i'm glad they do it

someone has to set the standard
Perfect emulation is nice though, we really don't want to end up in a situation where buying VC games ends up with a version of the game where all kinds of crap is completely broken
Although I do think they should be willing to make compromises there if it gets to the point that it's preventing them from releasing new titles.
red chamber dream
i just don't think they care about it much
Not impossible

Sometimes it's annoying though, like how they keep releasing the NES version of Donkey Kong with an entire level missing.
red chamber dream
releasing games on vc i mean
Also I think I was told at one point that every single VC game contains a copy of the emulator, rather than just storing the emulator on the system separately. Which means if they want to update the emulator, they would have to roll out an update to every single VC game. I'm not sure if that was just on the Wii or also on Wii U.
As far as VC on NX is concerned all I have to say is they better not charge me again for games I already bought. >>
