They're kind of between a rock and a hard place right now. They need to ditch the wii U because it's a money sink, but they need to do so in a way that doesn't loss of loyalists and make newcomers wary of investing in a new console that might get abandoned.
Shit if I bought a Wii U at launch and found Nintendo basically giving up on it already and asking me to buy a new one I'd be fucking done with their consoles. If I had a Wii U at all I'd probably feel the same, actually.

I don't think it's possible, unfortunately, real hard to have any faith in them after Wii U. It's sort of nuts to drop a console this quickly,

figure they announce the nx next e3 and it releases in november, that would be a 4-year lifecycle for wii u. shorter than most consoles last these days, but only 1 year shorter than most of nintendo's consoles, and not really short at all historically
