pokemon is an rpg, and i think you get the best experience when you play it like one
What'd you say?
Brilliant. In most RPGs that I play, I tend to find a few things that work, and slowly expand from that.

Is anyone going to Nuzlocke (or similar challenge) their first playthrough?

I tried that with Black 2 after I had completed White 2 for the first time, on Challenge Mode no less. Granted I decided to use Genesect but it was still absolutely brutal. Not going to do that to myself again given my track record for Nuzlockes in general.

But I've already got a bunch of Pokemon I'm interested in trying out from the ones we know so far, plus we're also getting two additional starters to mess with if we want. Going to have plenty of options to choose from so I don't see the point in limiting myself to anything less than a full team. If that makes me a bit underleveled in a standard playthrough I can power through it and rely on good strategy to get by if necessary.

Also, that's interesting about the multitype move. I know there's a new Ice move that's super effective VS water but I hadn't heard of that fighting/flying move yet.

yeah i tried a nuzlocke with black 2 too and just wasn't having fun ... it's a good challenge but not a fun way to go through the game
I'm curious. Based on what we know so far does anyone else have plans for their team yet? Here's my front runners:

- Greninja (Water/Dark)
- Pangoro (Fighting/Dark)
- Tyrantrum (Rock/Dragon)
- Talonflame or Pyroar (Fire/Flying vs Normal/Fire)
- Malamar (Dark/Psychic)
- Doublade (Steel/Ghost)

Kinda noticing how unbalanced it is at the moment, but I figure there's still a ton of unknowns out there that will shake things up once I get going and figure out which ones I like. And this doesn't even consider the Kanto starters, the event Torchic, or Yveltal being involved either.
Pffft. Researching Pokemon parties. Come on guys, Pokemon is way too easy for that. This isn't FFT or anything.
Anyway, I pre-ordered X. Hope someone around here has Y. We could get a whole trading circle jerk going on.
I just like seeing what types of teams people enjoy using and if the Pokemon I think are interesting match up with anyone else. Because yeah in-game is pretty easy for the most part.

Like I said I fully expect this to go out the window once I have my hands on the games anyway.

You're in luck, because from the looks of things you're one of the first here who is going with X.

Greninja (Water/Dark)
Base 80/90/75/100/75/120

if these are really greninja's stats then i'm definitely using him ... it's just what i've always wanted to see on a water starter

That's the thing, though. Optimization is encouraged by difficulty, and since Pokemon lacks that, I really have no incentive to work on it. That's not to say that I don't play the game as an RPG. It's just so easy and so simplistic compared to a lot of other turn-based RPGs that I don't bother with the minutiae as much.

it's intrinsically fun though

at any rate since there are several people here getting the game we'll definitely have to have some battles

Gonna go with a 3-man team again probably. I usually grab one ghost and one psychic along with the starter, but since the fox is part psychic I might just grab a rock and/or fighting.

Also Idk the purple is the best flavor of the original 3DS. Good man.

One of these days we'll have to swap codes, gotta dig up a charger does though to know mine
Wow yeah, complete opposite of most water starters so far. They're either heavily defensive or else generally balanced. Same with the grass types. An offensive based grass starter would be pretty cool too.

Let's hope we get that coordinated properly this time. We never did get that off the ground when BW came out.

Nah, I totally get you, it's just that there are better series out there for stuff like that.
red chamber dream
yeah samurott is the closest thing to greninja but the former was slow as fuck ... i'm just glad greninja is blazing fast, about time they gave that to something other than the fire starter
I think Pokemon's bare-boned battle system is a big factor in me not giving a shit about optimization.
red chamber dream
it's not bare boned at all mechanics-wise

it's just that npcs in that game don't use any advanced strategies
Club 27 Goals
I see how it is

Ya'll are grabbing the water Pokemon to counter my fire starter

Buncha dicks all up in here Not talking
red chamber dream
pokemon battling is probably one of the most strategic and complicated metagames out there
