Just got done with the beta. It was fun. The ventilation area in particular was excellent, and the pirates you fight in that area are made of win.

It was too linear and too easy, but it sounds like you plan to change that. The brighter color scheme in the one area takes a little getting used to, but, with all the dark hacks out there, it's kind of a nice change.

Will you be releasing more betas as you make progress? Or is this our only pre-release teaser (other than screenies of course)?

PLEASE MORE BETAS! This was really well done, as far as I can tell. So far, the difficulty is slightly easier than the original, but I like the different order of items - it's nice to have something really original. Also, I like your morphball graphics. The item, that is. Not when you go into it - I think that spot ought to be a bit bigger, like say one pixel or something, and also, try changing the color of the middle of the suit back. It doesn't look good this way from straight on, as in when you use an elevator or something, but it looks fine the rest of the time. Just a suggestion. Also, does anyone know where I can find a headered unmodified rom? I'm having to add a header to my rom using SMILE, then applying the patch.
I may make one more beta once I finish a few more upgrades, but after that, the wait will fully set in.
Fear Me! (Or else...)
NOOOOO!! How about just one every section of the game you complete? That's maybe 5 or 6 betas total, then the final release. Please? How about to just to some certain select people, like Acheron... or me... (Hint hint wink wink nudge nudge *SMACK!*) oops... little too hard there...
No, that's way too many betas. It doesn't make sense to do that. There would be no anticipation for the whole game if I release a beta that goes to the second to last item.

Potentially one more beta and that's it. That's where I stand still on the issue.
Fear Me! (Or else...)
Fooey. Anyways, where did you get a headered rom? Also, will you have an unheadered version of this?

Never mind. I got it.
My headered rom is the same one that I've had for years now. I have both headered and not in my collection. Wink

I will make both versions for the final release.

Thanks! Also, I went back and modified some of the doors so that you can get back, but unfortunately, some of those doors don't work properly. Maybe you want to have a look at that, for people who manage to avoid being sucked down and go back up? I'm talking mainly about the mother brain top door, and the door at the top of the room that that leads to.
The doors don't work because you're not supposed to go back up that way... #-o I blocked them off with invisible solid blocks/crumble blocks for a reason...
Fear Me! (Or else...)
Some of them aren't blocked off. Also, they don't line up at times. Such as, you go up, and half of it wasn't supposed to be there. You end up trapped in the wall. Sorry, just bug picking. Force of habit.
Again, you're not supposed to go back, that's why things messed up occasionally. I've fixed the ones that I left open.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I have to say, FirePhoenix0, that I've played most of the hacks available for Super Metroid, and I felt that so far yours has come the closest to capturing the feel for the original. Good job! =D>
Fear Me! (Or else...)
Agreed. Man, I love the difficulty level of this thing, except that it's just slightly too easy. Man, I wish I could help you out with this in some way... I really do think this is one of the better hacks existing, that you can mess with in SMILE. Seriously, this is probably a lot better than whatever I would work on would turn out to be. I like your level design.

comments like this make me so excited to play this!
I really hope you continue to make new graphics.(and not use green kirby's "detailed" blocks)
I love the feel of cyclonia.(but it's really thrown off by the cartoony sound of brinstar.. :x)
Fear Me! (Or else...)
Times like this really make you wish for a music editor or something... No lyrics, because those wouldn't fit in the game, but still, look at the pictures or the maps of Cyclonia. None of the music tracks quite capture its feel, I think.
Some thoughts:

Whenever I write a review of Super Metroid I usually score it in the 9.5 range, but if the rest of Volta keeps up the same level as this beta I'd have to give it nearly a perfect 10. I didn't mind the straightforwardness at all.

I love the open air feel of Gaia Heights, the palette works perfectly IMO, I wouldn't change it. The caves of Cyclonia were good, but the corners felt a little too... sharp for a dirt cave. Also, I agree that the music doesn't quite fit. I think you should try using the spore spawn music for the dark caves, seriously. It's normally used for boss fights, but if you don't think of it as "Miniboss only" music, I think it would fit very well.

Spore spawn? Maybe. If you could modify the boss music somehow and make it a little less intrusive and overly loud, that would work well for rooms before bosses, for caves, or suspenseful areas. I agree with you about liking the open area - I always noticed and disliked how much Super Metroid was underground. If I were you, though, I'd not have as many slopes as you use, because even though they look good, they leave a bunch of spots to be trapped in. Also, I'd not make quite as many areas in the first area that you have to come back to later, but still keep a bunch of those. Just get rid of maybe about 2-3 of them.

Really? But wouldn't the sound of the bubbles kind of ruin it? If you could get rid of that, then yeah, I could see where you're coming from.

He's asking if the demo ends at the specified place on his map.
Fear Me! (Or else...)
Yup, pretty much, if that's right after he beat Kraid.

Don't you only hear bubbles if you're underwater?

Yes, that's the end.
