I'm working on a Metroid 2 remake.

Here's a demo of the engine. At the end there's a stats screen, you can take a snapshot with F12 and post your best times.

Megaupload Mirror
FileFactory Mirror

This is a demo, so:
  • There are a few bugs here and there (spiderball and shinespark related)
  • The controls are not customizable YET, joypad support is also planned
  • Purists will find the physics inaccurate, some changes are done on purpouse (like walljumping from a nomal jump)
  • None of these levels will be on the completed game, they are exclusive to this demo.
  • There might be speed issues. The engine is not yet 100% optimized, try changing the resolution with F5 or F6
  • F11 displays FPS counter, ideally the demo should run at 60fps
  • Press F1 for help

There's more info about the project in this blog: Project AM2R

Comments, questions and suggestions are always welcome.

This looks really, really cool. Any idea when it'll be finished?
Damn straight... This looks very, very cool..!
And yes, Prince of Persia sucks :)

EDIT: Aw maaan, Game Maker game :< I can't run 'em.
I like Big Butts and I can not lie
Gamemaker, and there was me thinking you actually done some assembly hacking to MZM
red chamber dream
Why does it matter if he's using Gamemaker? This looks cool regardless.
I.. don't think P.JMan meant it that way.. More of a 'Wow, this looked so good that I thought it was a skilled MZM manipulation, but turns out you pulled it off only with Game Maker..! Good job mang' -tone.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Oh god do I hate rapidshare. BUY A PREMIUM ACCOUNT! BUY A PREMIUM ACCOUNT! Now because you have no premium account, WAIT!!!!! Enter the code! BUY A PREMIUM ACCOUNT!

Anyways, it was fun. I especially liked the
dark morphball maze.
There are three items I just can't seem to be able to find, though...

As for bugs, the only things I found were that bombs can be layered to give you enormous jump height (especially in combination with spider ball), and a hornoad once damaged me while I was speed boosting. You do fall WAY too fast, though.

My finishes:

Mister ...
Amazing.  Simply amazing.  I will definitely be checking this out when I get my computer fixed.  The only thing I question is starting out with both Super Missiles and Power Bombs, but its really not that big of a deal.  I really can't wait to play this.  I hope the rest of the project's construction goes smoothly.

Now, while I wait for the finished product, I just have to find GameMaker Rolling Eyes

Yeah, I was thinking "holy shit that is some insane ASM skills" when he was actually just using gamemaker

After having a play though this game:
I cannot beat Ridley with your configuration, I normally use Z for jump and X for fire. Spinning in mid-air after doing a non-spin jump stops your downwards momentum and keeps your horizontal momentum, which can be pretty nifty. Morphball is way to slow, and especially since the original made morphball faster than normal walking. When doing a spin-jump from gripping a ledge, you can't go forwards straight away like in MZM, you just seem to float backwards for a few frames. Ridley's AI is pretty basic, I'm guessing it's all controlled by timers? (wait, why is Ridley in an M2 remake?) I like the level design, I especially like the way you can activate spiderball in mid-air, it means that you can do a bomb jump and when you are about to hit a ceiling from the bombsplosion, so can activate spiderball to latch onto the ceiling. The IBJ, DBJ and HBJ are just like in MZM, thanks for not making me relearn bomb jumping Wink

Actually, that's only in the video. In the demo, we get to start out with Morph Ball, Charge Beam, and Power Grip.

Actually, HBJ isn't quite the same. You can do it without pressing anything other than Z.

As for me, I've found two more items. I'm assuming the last one I haven't found is Power Bombs or a Super Missile expansion.
I got up to Ridley, but I can't get past him.  It runs waaaaaay too slow here, it's like 14 FPS.

I made that little video with what I had done so far, Super Missiles and Powerbombs are shown just to let people know they are in the game and working. As soon as I get an alpha metroid up and running, I´ll upload another video.
Anyway, Super Missiles won´t affect metroid fights too much, otherwise omega metroids would fall too easily. Powerbombs will be found later in the game, in a new area before the last omegas.

Customizable controls are coming soon. You´re right about morphball speed. It was too fast, and the last time I tweaked it I made it too slow. My bad.
About the spinjump from a ledge, do you mean jumping straight up? I haven´t tried in MZM, I´ll check it out.
Ridley is controlled by timers, yes. The boss was a last minute idea, and I made it in a rush just to end the demo more dramatically, not just a "demo over" screen or a dead end. Ridley is not going to be in the final game, this demo is a small game to showcase the engine.
There´s more fun to be had with bombs. Remember Super Metroid when you morphed with a charged beam? You can do that here, and there are variations depending on wether you are in the air and the directions you are holding. Try it out.
Thank you for your observations.

Could you send me a PM with more details about the slowdown? Your machine´s specs, places where slowdown occurs, etc.

Thank you all for your comments
I invite you all to break my 1 item run record time:

When you are gripping a ledge (ala power grip) and you hold away from the ledge and press jump.

Would it not be a quick, easy modification to switch round the Z and X buttons, just for me

EDIT: Screw that, I managed to finish it after all!
I noticed something: If you have your beam charged, then morph and unmorph quickly, the charged beam is in the ground, and bombs come out immediately.

Mister ...
I must ask, where can I find that mix used in the video?  That has to be one of my all time favorite Metroid themes.

I'm with the other people who thought this was some insane Zero Mission hack, but it still looks great. I probably won't end up playing this, but I congratulate you for your efforts. Well done.

Are you ready for some underwear music?
It seems quite cool. I just can't wait to play the full version nor the demo. :D (Hint: I'm currently on my school's computer so I can't download it.)
Edit: Now when I edit this I had played the demo but I hope the full version's scenario looks more like in the original game and the pictures told me it would. Anywho, nice game. :)

Looks AWESOME!  I never played the original Metroid II and always though of it as "too linear for my liking" (like Fusion) but this will give me a reason to play it--and seeing as it isn't made by an official company, there may be more glitches, SWs, and SBs than if it were made by Retro.  1 more thing: when released, where will it be sold?

It wasn't made by Retro in the first place, only the Prime trilogy was.

Since it's a fangame, it probably won't be sold.

Since it's a fangame; it can't be sold. That's copyright infringement.

Thanks to the GameTrailers Metroid Restrospective, I came to know the Metroid Metal website (and all the muzak contained within).  It sounds similar, and my memory can't be that bad, so it's prolly the same.  Since this is about M2, I'd say it's the singular M2 cover, "The Tunnel".

I didn't remember to watch the video until now. Can't wait to see the Alpha Metroid battle. :)

It certainly can be sold.  It can't be legally sold, but it can be sold.  Example: You have the game, you give a CD or something with the game on it to this guy who gives you money for it.
