Its amazing how differently people view the games, and metroid as a whole.  I view ZM as the absolute pinnacle of what metroid is really all about.  I'm def a 2D fan and have always felt like the Prime games were more like an off-shoot from the rest of the series.  Having played each game in the series when they were brand new has given me a somewhat different take on the progression of it all, I suppose.  The original metroid was absolutely mindblowing in its day.  Zebes was considered to be huge, and the idea of trying to explore it all was kind of overwhelming.  Even moving to the left was a mind-fuck, something that people don't think twice about today.  The music, overwhelmingly large environment, the fact that samus was a female, everything - it all added up to something that was unique and ultimately made players rethink what gaming was about and what it could do.  The Legend of Zelda was doing the same thing during that time, and between those two games I would have to say that gaming was forever changed.
If I were to introduce someone to metroid, I would definitely turn them on to ZM first.  I might not even have them bother with the original metroid, since ZM basically does the same thing as that game (showing the player where it all began and what it's all about), only ZM does it much better than the original metroid.
I'm also surprised at the comparisons to the size and length between ZM and Fusion.  I consider them to be just about the same, since for me there's really only about a 12 minute difference in total playtime when going for 100% (with Fusion being the longer one).  Fusion has alot more items to pick up, but getting them all takes barely any more time than ZM.  Actually, Super is definitely the shortest of the three, and I never hear anyone say that Super felt like it was too short.

lol no way
Yeah that's a good point regarding game length, and it probably does have much to do with nostalgia. I mean I really wasn't much of a conscious being even when Super came out, although I did play a ton of it and Metroid II when I was really young, and was even excited about Samus being in the first Smash Bros or in Mario RPG. I definitely don't have a real appreciation of pretty much everything in your first paragraph, and I did not take that into consideration with my last post, but it is really important actually. With Super Metroid even they worked to make the game unique, boasting about its huge cartridge size. Really though the 2d games are all about the same length.
I think my approach to introducing someone to Metroid might be a little different, but that's just out of reverence for SM, like its glory ought to immediately draw anyone in. ZM is probably a more approachable game to most players these days though, especially because Fusion assumes you have an understanding of the story up to that point. The way the timeline has been so fucked with though, it's sort of a wonder anyone can be newly turned on to the series.
Hence MOM I suppose. (to remain on topic)

LOL that's pretty good.

It's kinda funny how one hardcore fan thinks that he has the authority to decide what is and isn't a Metroid/*insert game series* game.  The only thing that makes a Metroid game a Metroid game is the developers deciding to put "Metroid" on the disk case.  If Nintendo wants to make Metroid hockey, then its a fucking Metroid game.

Sure, there is a Metroid "theme," but game devs are allowed to break from that theme.  Fans have no right to say whats a Metroid game or whatever or not.  The only right you have is the right to buy it or not.  And (unfortunately) the right to bitch.

Cool, so you agree with me because by your definition these newer "Metroid" games aren't real Metroid games as well. The original designer of Metroid was Makoto Kanoh, and he only worked on Metroid, Metroid II and Super Metroid. Gunpei Yokoi also only produced the first three games and Hiroji Kiyotake was also only involved with the first three games, and according to Wikipedia, them and Yoshio Sakamoto are the central figures in development of Metroid. The other Metroid games have been made by random people with supervision of 1 of 4 main and central Metroid developers, and that doesn't cut it. So yeah, by your definition only 3 Metroid games exist. And it shows, doesn't it?

Glad we agree, because these mindless obnoxious fanboys with their love for any crap that has "Metroid" written over it was starting to get on my nerves, to be honest. extra_smug
Bananas GOOD, Kremlings BAD
....now, although that's "technically" true Shinespark, a new Metroid/(Insert Series) game that veers from my impression of the quintessential Metroid/(Insert Series) game might eventually turn me off from buying more games of that series.  That ultimately depends on my level of satisfaction with the series.

As for Metroid, Prime 3 has started to turn me off from the 3d series, maybe mostly because I felt the developers were tied to a leash and were unable to make new breakthroughs in the Metroid universe.  Since M:OM is from a different developer and is more Super Metroid-ish, I still want to buy it.  If anything, to experience playing through it and maybe find some tricks or whatever...

(Still sort of on topic, because the Mario series is an ongoing series like Metroid)
I don't know what happened, but I've been turned off from the Mario series.  I think part of the reason might be New Super Mario Bros. (DS).  I tried to play it for fun, but it seemed the developers knew too well exactly how to place enemies so that I couldn't get the most enjoyment out of just running and jumping and avoiding enemies.  The power-ups also seemed to hinder me more:  Tiny Mario with high jumps?  Awesome.  No wait, I did in one hit and have even less control :(  Koopa Mario?  Awesome.  No wait, I tended to fall into pits more because I'd bounce off blocks whenever I tried to be cool and roll in the shell. :(  Now Super Mario Galaxy SHOULD have sold me.  I bought it and was awed by the graphics and the top-down game play.  It just wasn't enough.  Everything was too familiar.  Maybe it's platforming in general, I don't know.  Personally I'd rather MAKE a simple platforming game on PC than play one, even if it's super 3d, high resolution.  3DS?  I don't know...

Sorry, I don't agree with you.  Maybe you misunderstood me.  The only thing that makes a Metroid game a Metroid game is the fact that Nintendo says so (by making it themselves or giving another company license to make it)

The only thing a fan is allowed to determine is whether it is a traditional game in the series, and that is still debateable.

Its kind of like a debate on what people's favorite colors are.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I don't know that almost sounds constructive.

Indie Lover
mine is orange... this is why i don't like the gravity suit... i think...
I wonder if the Power Suit from Fusion is ever gonna make a reappearance.
Indie Lover
if they make a metroid game after fusion, i am almost sure it will.

y'know, i preffer the varia suit, for me is the most awesome suit samus uses(second is the PED suit) but i think the fusion suit is cool, is not that bad as ppl say...
I really like the dark suit alot.
the light suit was cool too.
the ped is defiitely the best tho

Oh god, the PED was the most retarded looking suit ever. The Phazon powers were cool, but the look of it was so weird.
I don't have a favourite colour. Oh, the anarchy!

Yeah I really think that the suits in MP3 sucked.  MP2 had the best suits.
red chamber dream
i liked the dark suit a lot but prime's were probably my favorite.

Fusion Varia.
I like turtles.
The color scheme was what was wrong with Fusion's Varia Suit.  The shape was fine.

The PED was the inverse.  I was lovin' the glowing-blue color scheme, but the physical design was rather "meh."

my umbrella goes directly to Bankai
my favorite suit is between mp1's varia and the base Fusion suit.

all the others look weird/bad/dumb.

regarding sequence breaks, i would prefer fake SBs than no SBs at all. mp3 really burned me with how linear it is. i hope other m has at least some alternate routes like ZM to make replays more exciting.
Club 27 Goals
Zero suit is best suit.

Yeah, the Varia Suit is definitely the best of Samus's suits. No wonder it's been her signature outfit since Metroid II. And instead of fake sequence breaking, they should just have forks in the road with optional backtracking, like in games like SM or SoTN.
