Got my video converter on monday, spent a few days recording, and this is the result: Metroid II, completed with 100% items, without saving. 1:10:17 actual completion time (1:08 in game).

I'm pretty happy with it. I know it can be shaved down pretty easily in some areas, but overall I managed to throw in almost every speed trick I know. The only part I'm really disappointed with is in the spider ball room... that part is just... ech. The parts I'm thrilled with are the zeta metroid fights. Except for the first one, I managed to stick them fairly quickly.

If the queen had just opened her mouth earlier, I could have possibly shaved 5 seconds off. But, I did manage to get those missiles in quickly.

Enjoy.  :)
Thread title:
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
Grabbin.
(as scarlet pulls a governator)
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
What?

And GameAddict said my posts were random and confusing...
among other things, the governator is famous for grabbin girls.

not to be confused with girlie men.
Talk about unexpected... but I must ask how you recorded the sound.  It seems a bit... weird.  At about 4 minutes in there's a knocking sound!  Did you record it with a microphone??

Also the vid is like 28.9 fps.  You know it should be 29.97?

Why did you use a turbor controller?  :(
It's not a turbo controller, that's pure imported Hori. It's just a matter of getting close enough to them so there's less time the missiles are in flight.

And yeah... the sound is screwed. I don't have a line-in port on my iBook, so I had to improvise and tape an earbud directly onto the built in mic.

The framerate I'm attributing to dropped frames 'cause of my old comp. I don't know why it did, but apparently it couldn't keep up. The sound is at the right frequency and in sync though, so that is the correct time.
Dropped frames doesn't alter the fps of the video.  The framerate of all my captured vids is 29.97, but I drop 2-3 frames a second.  Are you using virtualdub to capture?  You should definitely check nate's faq for capture info if you haven't already.  I can't believe there's no sound input on an iBook!

I'm aware you can fire missiles fast when you're right in the queens face, but compare my fight to yours and it seems obvious you used turbo.  You're shooting 10 a second, nobody can tap that fast!

I can. Well almost. I can go about 9 per second. But that's only when I force may arm to go spastic and shake like mad, so I doubt it would work during a run.

I'll be watching the run later today. Probably before I go to bed.

Edit: Watched the queen fight, and the missiles do look too fast for fingers.
All I did was place the controller on my lap, with my right index finger on B and middle finger on A, and "shiver". Basically just tense up my wrist, and it'll repeatedly press the button incredibly fast with minimal effort. I could have a video of it up tomorrow if needed.

And no, I wish I could use virtualdub on my mac, but there's no mac version, so I'm stuck with the crappy software that came with the usb capture device. iMovie is too slow on my computer, so that's not an option. If you've got any suggestions, I'm more than happy to hear it.

Edit: btw Radix, I've been wondering why the sound is a higher pitch on your recordings than in-game?

Not sure what you mean, specific example of an affected sound?
My run was on super game boy instead of game boy player, maybe they have different sound emulation.

Also is your run on a tape or did you record it live?
The music, the sound, everything through the entire run. It might be my playback though, I'll look into it. [edit: alright, it's my end, fixed :)]

Mine is recorded live w/ little compression, since I don't have a VCR to hook up to it. I'm thinking I'll have to go with no compression at all initially to see if I can get rid of the dropped frames.

I'm thinking what happens is my converter just leaves the frames out, and reduces the fps of the video to compensate.
i'm familiar with that rapid fire technique, though i guess i'd never seen anything at which it would actually be useful. i just tap really fast in a more traditional way instead. sounds like i could be quite the return of samus runner, huh. ;)
OK Well I'm going to try and remove the external sounds, becuse they're annoying.  Next time please make sure to turn off all sounds from your computer and minimize your coughing etc.

Then I'll need the date you did the run and some comments for SDA.
Thanks, but I'll be doing another run this afternoon to fix everything. I think I figured out a way to lock it at 29.97 fps, so let's hope.
you could of saved more time in the second long shaft that goes down not the one with blocks the one with those arrow enemies there go to the top and morph into a ball and go though a secret passage way and you go to the end of the shaft
That actually takes more time, since you have to jump up, morph into a ball, and wait to bounce and come out... as opposed to just doing a straight drop and unmorph as shown. Same drop speed, less time taken.

Hmmm... I guess from your lack of more posts that you haven't suceeded at another run?
Still working on it. I just got my iMic today, so I just started recording again. I've got a few new tricks and a new route, so I'll see what's possible.
Well, pleasant surprise. A weeks' worth of practice apparently equates to an easy time recording. Just managed to record a 1:09:18 run. Video should be up next morning when it finishes encoding.

Btw, how does the whole submission process work for the speed runs section?
You give me the video, the date you did it, some comments, and what you want to be credited as, wether real name + nick or just a nick, and if you want an email on the page too... and that's it.

Since you can upload the files to your space, the most difficult portion is easy :-p

Congrats on the time... didn't think 100% could go so low.  I fear for my any% now  :o

On the one hand, you won't have the record anymore. On the other, 1:00:00 might just be broken. That'd be worth the loss of the record, wouldn't it?

Well, unless I can figure out a faster way to collect items than Radix, and out-perform him in the platforming, I doubt he has anything to worry about. Maybe a few seconds, but that run has style written all over it. :)

Anyway, here's the beef:

Comments:
I've been playing Metroid II ever since I borrowed it from a friend in '92, and really haven't stopped playing it since. Had to buy a used pak a few times just because I'd lose it in moving, but hey, it's worth it. I hadn't really tried doing speed runs until now though, so I hadn't even heard about the acid dipping sequence break until a few weeks ago. In any case, it took quite a number of resets, and several hours of "practice runs" (*cough* mistake-ridden-speed-runs *cough*), but the stars finally aligned and 1:09:18 was achieved.

I'm pretty happy with most of the run. The first few minutes are probably the cleanest, since that's the most practiced portion (and hardest to perfect, due to all the morph-balling, and precision jumping). The main parts that slowed me down were a few missed jumps, and the metroid fights, especially the zeta metroids.

The route I took is intended to prevent any unnecessary backtracking by picking up new beams. So instead of collecting the beams at their earliest pickup location, I wait for the last ruins to collect them all in one fell swoop, ice beam last. This allows for a complete skip of the final refuel and ice beam pickup, which saves around 30 seconds alone, but also leaves for a slightly slower queen fight due to the requirement of the bombing method.

Overall, a pleasant run. I'd expect 1:08:xx is easily possible, and there's probably a possibility of 1:07:xx if the metroid fights can be done cleaner (and the last energy refill I took is skipped... I expected worse for the omegas).

Enjoy. :)

I just got my iMic today

just curious, how much did you pay for it?
Got it for $35 through Small Dog. Paid $11 for 2-day shipping.

Most other vendors have it for $40 though.
