Here's how to do the tube missiles

Here's the video

That M2k2 guy
There's like...no method of actually discovering that. O_o

Yeah, that sucks. I expected it to be another grapple block in an unlikely spot, or a ridiculous type of crystal flash, like having to do it on the speed blocks or something.

Do you just try that for every single block in the room? To get 100%, do you guys crystal flash in every single block of every single tunnel and crap in order to test grapplability? There has to be some kind of in-game hint for some of the glitchier tricks at least. That's just far too much for me.

Another undocumented move that requires a newspaper...? :-s

laugh new

I seen Lances movie (yes, before I ever even played the game), and I'll say that I'm glad I did.  I've decided that I don't intend to ever play this.  It looks much too difficult.  :o

It's like, I like hot sauce and spicy food....  But this is like Daves Insanity suace.  Just too hot to even enjoy.  Embarassed  But whoever wants to play it - knock yourself out.  Rolling Eyes
I have to say this game defeated me. I got to maridia, but it was at the point where I wasn't even enjoying the game anymore.

After watching Lance's run, I have to say that I made the right decision.

It is an impressive feat overall, but not my cup of tea. I'm a decent player, but no master.
Hello, I'm considering on doing a tool-assisted speedrun of this game, using memory watcher, frame advance and many savestates. I haven't played this hack in months so I'd need some pointers from you guys. Do you think using Lance's playthrough/speedrun route would be a vice choice for SM:I TAS? How would you like to watch a TAS of this game, have you any pointers, etc.

I'm probably starting any day now. :)

Do a 100% TAS if any TAS at all
For any% I'd already have Lance's route which I would be using, but for a hack like this 100% would have a really really complicated route which I'd have to plan, I suck at routeplanning and the run itself would have to perform many tricks hard even with tool-assistance (mostly getting the X-Ray - that Crystal flash) and last but not least, I pretty much suck at TASing.

A 100% SM:I TAS would probably be nice, I just think I won't be doing it because of the reasons above.
I really like your idea of making a TAS. I am honored to see you consider my route a good one, but just remember to polish out all the flaws I had there, like collecting some unnecessary missile packs and wandering around somewhere out of the route  :)
(I was playing on intuition so there are some disturbances in the flow of the gameplay)

- As moozooh pointed out at tasvideos, early space jump is very cool and should be implemented. Just go and collect the second super missile pack from the original gravity suit place and you can get them right after exiting Maridia the first time. My playthrough has one style of killing the beetoms (end of part 6 in youtube), I also remember sending one smv in this thread earlier too, that one has somewhat different strategy if I remember right.

- When entering LN, you should be able to make it to the chozo statue before you have to use your reserve energy and thus reach the GT energy tank without CF (or is it possible anymore in this version?). Anima Zero has some great stuff about it earlier in this thread. (yeah, have fun browsing backwards if you feel like it  :D )

- I think you should collect all the possible super missile packs not too far from the route and leave the missiles to minimum. If I have time, I can check and give my opinion which are good choices, but not right now.

EDIT:
Oh, found the smv for the second strategy for getting the early Space Jump, it is much faster than the other one, might need some luck manipulation to align the beetoms just right.

To be continued....  :D
Thank you very much Lance, it's sure possible to get to GT in v.1.5 without having to CF, but I don't know is it possible without using reserves. With tool-assistance it just might be. What do you guys think, should I leave all reserves out because they slow me down, or just go to pause menu everytime I need to refill my energy? After all, this run aims for best ingame-time so going to pause menu wouldn't harm it.

For update about the run, I've collected morph ball and the first missile pack and am now at Bomb Torizo (already!). :) This one might take some time as I'm not good in TASing boss fights, but I'm sure the guys at TASvideos will help me out.

Thanks about the ideas guys, keep them coming!
You should not reach GT without using reserve tanks, you should reach the chozo statue just before normal e-tanks are empty so that your energy does not drain during the statue animation. With the energy left in your reserves, you should reach the next e-tank. Experiment how much energy you need to reach the GT e-tank from the statue. Overall you might need less e-tanks than we think.

This experimenting thing applies to all of LN, you might want to test how much you need energy for each section, make some semi-perfect tests about it. (well, easy for me to say, I am no TASer at all....)

Also, you will be entering pause screen many times no matter what, so I dont think using reserves on the side will do any harm. Others might want to complain about it, but it is your run and your choice.

Glad to hear you got a good start for this.

Here's an extremely unoptimized test to go to GT without Crystal Flash or reserve tanks. I know I shouldn't be having screw attack, but it wasn't of any help anyway. I know that the statue drains your energy (??) but I think with higher optimization and better planning this is very possible. :)
What version of snes9x are you using? Lately I have had some troubles viewing any of the smv -files, I just get error messages about corruption and wrong versions and such.
I'm using snes9x-1.43. If you have some problems with getting that smv work I can upload .avi somewhere if you want?

On the other news, it's WIP time! :P

Bomb Torizo done and on my way to gauntlet. I'm really proud of the Torizo fight, REALLY. I did it all by myself and it differs from JXQ's or any other players' fights.  extra_smug Enjoy.
Strange, I was able to look at your WIP but not the torizo test one... I am using improvement7 and I also have improvement9 to try out. What version might play the smvs provided nowadays by hero of the day and other tasers? I lost my ability to view any of those and I thought it was the version change but now I am not sure anymore.

Oh, and I like your wip, looks very nice. Especially the Torizo fight was awesome. Gauntlet will provide some challenge for you because there really is no space for rapid movement there. If it is possible, you might move along two pillars with one tide by bombing the low block and jumping upwards to gain enough airtime to land to the hole you made. Or maybe some bomb jumping is possible. (wow that was not clearly explained, but anyway....) Seems really hard though.

Snes9XW 1.43 v9
Lance, I just entered Gauntlet and I'm having problems, as I firstly have to wait until the lava goes down, that costs time, plus many other things. This place is one son of a bitch to TAS fast without Screw Attack/Speed Booster. I kinda got the idea about bombing and landing on the hole, I just need to test it. I'm glad to hear you liked my WIP, I'm not sure if I'll post too many of them to make the run as enjoyable/surprising for you as I can, but we'll see. ;)

Keep them ideas coming!

W as in Windows? I tried that one but the torizo test smv and few others still give error about the file being a wrong format. Very strange.

EDIT: Tonski, I tried some things in Gauntlet and the best idea I had was to take damage boost from the zoomers and reach the next pillar before lava rises. You have to be pretty quick though. They cause 10 points of damage so you can take a couple of those to proceed faster. Touching any lava is a big no-no.

I did not whip up any examples, but you should benefit from the first and second one (others too, did not test those very well). I am not good at perfecting things, so I will leave that for you  :)  That lava rhythm might actually be pretty close one for good TASing.

Yes. Also, it says on Microspace:

Type: .smv (Snes9X Movie -- v1.43(-WIP))

EDIT: I can actually play it on snes9x v9. It only reports wrong file formats on SNES9x 1.51 anyway
Ok, I did some testings and I think the lavas rising/falling rhytm works pretty well with me when optimized tightly, I don't think I'll be using too many of those Zoomers but depends on what will turn up faster in the end. :P I'll continue my work tomorrow and post comments on how things turned out.

I'm repeating myself I know that but for the final time I'm telling you guys to please post any ideas about this hack that might be helpful when TASing this game.
At the moment I dont have time to comb my own playthrough so I will just throw a couple of examples from the top of my mind:

- Cool entrance to Kraids lair with some nice diagonal bomb jumping, not getting hit by spikes because they drain almost all of your energy.

- I dont know if Phantoon 1-round kill is possible, but at least he should be very fast with the doppler effect missile shooting. At this point it would ease up things if you have plenty of missiles and supers after the fight, because getting that second super missile pack will require killing all the enemies in the top room.

- After getting the space jump it might be good to get just the charge beam and the original x-ray e-tank, nothing more. You do not need all the arsenal for Draygon anyway.

- Maybe possible to luck-manipulate Draygon to give you many super missiles? (refrain from using regular missiles altogether perhaps?)

- The below blocks in the noob bridge room are speed boost blocks, it is cool and fast to short-charge through it when getting back to green Brinstar after getting the Speed Booster

- You will need 10 or even 15 less power bombs than me to survive Lower Norfair. Refilling might be necessary (at least super missiles), but not by too much. Maybe you dont have to "abuse" the refill station. At least two less Crystal Flashes required too.

- Use hero of the day´s method in the vertical shaft after pillar room in LN (charge the shine in the pillar room, shinespark up the lower part). That should save time and energy.

- Maybe you can optimize the use of plasma shield to kill that topmost enemy like I did in my run? Personally I think that was kinda cool to use something that is not normally used in runs. (Plasma shield kills that pirate with three hits, didnt slow me down that much, but still did). I am not trying to enforce that trick in, but if it is possible and not too much slower than morphing over him, then why not...

- When obtaining the wave beam, some speedmockspringballing might be fast  =)

I will write some more when I have more time and if I can think of anything even remotely useful. I hope this helps any.
Almost happy
Phantoon 1 round should not be possible I think, I don't know if he has more health but there is also much less space, 2 round should deffinetly be possible.

I don't remember if you could blow up all 3 blocks when entering kraid but if you can it might work to CWJ all the way to the next platform. That would be much cooler and probably faster.
Thanks alot Lance and CPadolf!! Lots of good ideas which I will all consider and probably test, thank you. :)

Personally, I don't like the Plasma Shield idea, but I bet it's worth some testing.

I don't know if it's slower to first lay 3 bombs to clear all block out of the way and then do the CWJ, than to clear 1 of them and do some cool diagonal bomb jumping. :P When I think about it more the bomb jump would be cooler but the CWJ would probably be faster, I'll try it when I'm there.

Phantoon 2 round, this is something I have to test a lot. I suck at Phantoon fights, I've tried. Plus this time he has more energy and smaller space to do the 2 round.

I think I sure can manipulate Draygon to give supers, but are you suggesting I go to him with 2 etanks or..? Also the noob bridge idea is a good one. :)

I'm constantly moving ahead with the run, first gauntlet room is now done and the second should be a bit easier in my opinion.

EDIT:
I have reached Green Brinstar. Refiling slowed me down with those big things that let out small budgers or whatever, but I think I did it pretty stylish. :P As I've said I'm not looking for extremely tight optimization, this run aims 50% entertainment 50% tight optimization.
Almost happy
Well since if you do it right it only takes 30 frames (IIRC) to lay 3 bombs maybe a little more to get them all placed right and it takes 1 second to wait for every bomb to blow up in a DBJ and 2 or 3 are needed I guess that CWJ should be faster, and I think it would look cool to.

EDIT: Also if the platform is as long as in the normal game you don't have to blow up the lowest block, check Hero of the days version3 Any%.
The any%Version3 desyncs with me already at WS outer area after he's beaten Phantoon. I might try to watch it again, I think I'll go for the CWJ when I'm there.
Speedrunner
I just finished watching SM hack impossible completions. Annoying all segments doesn,t working, example Ridley.

This was cool hack. This guy in Finland complete that sub 2.30. This is probably fastest completion what i see.

EDIT:
Yeah you can find that video in youtube! Wink
