Well, at least I think Draygon, GT and Ridley fights are all pretty hard. They were much harder for the first time because the lack of weapons.
Draygon requires some good reflexes (which all/most people achieve with the help of save states and/or slowdown), Golden Torizo does require some luck manipulation and Ridley is very hard too if you dont have enough firepower in your arsenal.

A TAS of this game would indeed be interesting, but you would have to do a lot of testing to figure out the minimum amount of weapons and e-tanks for each situation. What might the absolute minimum of e-tanks for Lower Norfair be....

I think one good playthrough provides both the fastest completion and about the minimum amount of items needed for completion.
Cpadolf: Grats on finishing the hack :).

Personally...I found Ridley much much harder than GT.  Then again, I don't think anyone else had at least 30 Supers to make GT quite easy  laugh new .

But to further address about needing to make an E-Tank and/or Reserve Tank available only after Ridley, I did a little testing after continuing my replay of this hack (Just got across that blasted missile lake into WS).

I took my smv I had of getting to GT without a CF and did a couple things with it...

First off...making 1 reserve tank unavailable will not be enough as I suspected.  What I did was stop the smv after I got on the chozo statue and watched the acid go down.  Made a savestate just before it finished draining completely, then as I dropped down off the statue (After being refilled by my reserves), I made another savestate after waiting for at least one tank worth of energy to deplete.

That would simulate having only 3 Reserve Tanks (Set to Auto of course :P).

After several attempts, I made it to the E-Tank in GT's room with 28 energy to spare.  I'll admit that I made that 2nd savestate a bit too early and had 11 more energy or so than I should have, but that wouldn't have made a difference. I still would have made it to the E-Tank (Although with less than 20 energy I think).

The 2nd test...I reloaded my smv, but this time, I made a savestate during the first door transition in LN.  I let one tank worth of energy drain out before using up my Reserves manually to simulate having only 10 E-Tanks.

I'll tell you now that taking out an E-Tank is the best way.  I only had about 60 or so energy left by the time I got past those blocks I power bomb in my smv after the acid completely drains away.  I don't see any way of making it to the pre-GT E-Tank this way without literally bum-rushing it past the enemies via Space Jump usage...and even then, I don't think that will be enough.

So in conclusion...making an E-Tank unavailable until after Ridley is the surefire way to make someone have to use a CF before GT.

Reserve Tanks...you'd have to make at least 2 unavailable until after Ridley if you went this route.

Hope that helps clear this up some.
Yeah, the best way is to make one e-tank available later and not touch the reserves. That should not change things too much compared to v1.4
Also I guess it is also the easiest way for Saturn to make changes.

I am still wondering how much energy would an optimized attempt have left at the beginning of LN or just before GT. We shall see in the distant future when someone shows us. At least I dont have the skills to make TAS kind of quality to try it out myself. Well, at least "regular" players will be forced to use that CF in the next version.
Congrats on completion, Max and Cpadolf!

I just want to say that I got some problems with the new version, and it took me some more time to fix them. I had to rechange the item locations one more time to not destroy the intentioned route...

But it got fixed now and almost finalized, so the new version will definitely be done this weekend!
Waaaaaaa i want insanity
So how much is going to change in the new version.
oh and btw how do you get the e-tank in gauntlet?
That e-tank in gauntlet can be obtained by using some special weapons. I wouldnt want to spoil it further but if you REALLY want to know it right away, check the spoiler

grapple beam
lol, spoiler tags on a game over a decade old. Besides, I'd assume that if he's asking that he would want to know how.
Hey thats great

Only that...
-This hack is not over a decade old
-This hack is very different in many ways
-Answers should not be told straight so that people would have the joy of discovering something themselves. At least I want to give them that possibility

Satisfied?
Oh shit, sorry, this is the hack. Right.
Ok, the new version 1.5 is up now!

It now contains, along the standard headered version, a headerless one as well, so you won't have problems to apply the patch having only the headerless ROM anymore. :)

This version will definitely be the last one if no more bugs or glitches will be found. Check it!
Sweet :D.  Thanks Saturn.  I'm playing through the new version right now.  Started from the beginning and made it all the way past the DBJ over the missile lake I somehow got the DBJ done correctly after only a minute or two on it.  Normally it takes me...well, half an hour, maybe more if I get really unlucky :P.

About to enter the WS now...
Yeah, I was going to post that unfortunately I dont have time to play just now... BUT:

I have now finished item collection for Lower Norfair  :)

Saturn, you did not implement that platform thingie I suggested in the Wrecked Ship. Was it too stupid idea after all or was it too difficult/tedious/complicated to put in? Or did you just forget about the whole thing?  :P

I have also partly lost the skill of diagonal bomb jumping, it took me like a minute to get across  :)  Thats what you get when it is not a mandatory skill in the regular SM...

EDIT: Played a little further. Nice touch in the vertical mochtroid room. Noobs will surely ask about that  :)
I also like how you made the more useful items behind tricky places instead of just missiles. Although if I would play Impossible the first time with this version, I would probably lose my mind because of all that trickery and creativity needed in searching and exploring.

I was so prepared for Draygon fight (4 e-tanks, 15 supers and 35 missiles) and still he gave me hard time. Right about when the fight started I gave up on trying that monster without any save states.
Wow, this are big progresses in a fast time already!
I see your DBJ skills got really bad and rusty by now. Sorry if it took you just 1 minute instead of a half hour... :P

Lance:
About the WS platform, I forgot it sorry, :(
but I don't think it would make much sense there anyway. Thanks for the reminder though, I should try it out nevertheless, and if it will make any sense I will just make a quick update to 1.5.1 or just let the version name unchanged...

About the mochtroid room, I think it should be pretty obvious. There are 2 reasons I don't want to spoil yet, that you can easily notice in that room. Also I didn't want to let this nice part of the room being wasted for nothing, so I think it was a good choice.

And wow, 4 tanks at draygon is extremely prepared indeed. But Squ4ll- still keeps the record for being the most prepared one at him, sorry. :)
Yeah but that was the early version...  :P
Is there any possibility in this version to get more items for the Draygon fight? At least none come to my mind.

I snagged the Space Jump early and fetched the one tank from the original SM x-ray room. Also it was nice to have the charge beam for Botwoon and Draygon for a change.

Anyway, I am pretty sure I will attack Lower Norfair today, cant wait to see the changes in that area.

EDIT: That was over quite quickly. 3:19 with 79% items. Maybe now I shall begin the item hunt in the new version. I assume some new puzzles are still waiting out there  :)
I am curious about the "new" trick required to get some item.

P.S. SPIKES!! You really got pissed off about the ceiling trickery in Maridia  :)  Also spikes next to the Norfair elevator was brilliant. Nobody can get even close to reaching that e-tank without CF. I got next to the statue with some energy left but my approach was pretty "optimal" already so i doubt even a TAS can do it. Good job on that one. GT was hard, but not too hard.

It's still possible to get up to 6 tanks and one reserve tank before Draygon (in the early version you could get even one more).

WTF... Space Jump before Draygon or even Maridia?? How please?

Wow, so you apparently didn't even got that item before game completion? That would sure make LN much harder that way (but not too hard for Lance as usual :P).

Yeah, you can tell!
I took much time and testing to design the correct entrance to that area, and it got bypassed all the time. Although it was nice to see the big snail glitching possibilities, only the original entrance must allow geting that item(s).

I'm not Lance, but I have a pretty good idea on how one can snag Space Jump before Plasma Beam...

The enemies in that room with it can be damaged by Super Missiles.  Yup, Supers.  Getting to a safe spot though is the tough part.  Get one of those buggers onto you and you're essentially SOL.

But what should happen is to be in morph ball form when entering the room.  Otherwise you'll get one/two of those buggers on you and be given a quick and painful death most likely.

Roll all the way left, then time a power bomb to go off to propel you upward without getting those buggers attached to you.  A real ugly pain to execute correctly as the chance one of those buggers latching onto you is very very high at this point.

If all goes well, you can roll into where the Space Jump is.  It ain't over yet though.  You now have to wipe out those buggers with Supers.  One takes...I think 5-6 Supers to kill.  Now how would one take out 4 buggers with only 10 Supers?

Hope they're clumped up.  All 4 oughta be stacked one on top of the other or very very close to it.  Fire a Super just as they land on the left side of the room (You can stand up in the small pit where you got the Space Jump and do this with little/any chance of a bugger attaching to you).  Repeat until they are all killed.

Extremely tough with 10 Supers I'd reckon, but with 15, it's easier.  By that time though, you're better off just snagging up the Plasma Beam to deal with them.

Also...as I mentioned before, this is insanely difficult to pull off without savestate abuse or massive luck.

Hopefully that clears that up for you Saturn.  If you need a better explantion about certain parts, just ask.

As for me...Phantoon has fallen (With fewer savestates needed than when I attempted it on my first playthru).  Got another set of Supers (10 total now).

Currently in Maridia.  Very close to snagging up Power Bombs.
Anima Zero explained the main points but here is my version of the Space Jump:

Roll into the room. One bugger jumps right over you. Move to the center of the room (next to where the floor gets one step higher). Another bugger jumps over you. They wont attach to you if you dont get up or go too close. You can get pretty close without screwing up.

Now you have to wait for a while to get the other two buggers closer so they can jump over you too. Now you can cluster them all up. This is quite hard but not that hard really.

When they are piled up, they will jump over you at turns. One super missile can hit all four of them so it might be possible to do the deed even with 6 supers. Maybe you were smart beforehand and defined the needed amount for 6 or one could get that jump with only one pack of supers  :)

Anyway, when they jump over you, they will most likely jump in the same pattern all the time. What I did was that I jumped up and fired a super missile diagonally downwards every time their pattern leaved an opening. Guaranteed 4-hit with right timing, which is quite hard because there is not much time before another one of them jumps forward and takes the hit by himself.

Now just slam all your super missiles at them and hope they hit all of them enough so they will all die.
After that it is nothing but space jumping around  laugh new

Oh right, now I remember at least Norfair reserve tank and Crocomire e-tank are available before Maridia. Well, too much trouble  :)
Thanks for the detailed explanations.
Of course I know that one of them can only be killed with 6 Supers (didn't I change their status to make them so powerful? 8-)), but I didn't expect that only 10 Supers would be enough for that part. Seems like I underestimated the possibility to hit multiple (or even all) ones with one shot, which is very hard as they quickly jump around all the time, but now I see how you did that. :)

Thinking about how tricky it is, and that Space Jump won't affect anything important (useless in the last quests underwater, before geting it legally anyway), I don't intend to fix that.

And Lance is right, I intentionally made them require 6 shots to definitely prevent Space Jump if only having 1 Super Missile pack. P.JMans early Space Jump collection before Kraid is still a big mystery, and I think he most likely just had some cheat codes enabled he didn't notice, that triggered the grey door to open after collection.

Btw Lance, how many Supers and Power Bombs did you got before LN in your last playthrough?

Also good Luck on further progress, Anima Zero. Let's see how you will do at GT with the new conditions. :)
That Space Jump was really not that useful as you said, but it did help me get the old x-ray room e-tank easily and also it saved me some trouble traveling through that big room before Draygon. Still not worth the trouble though, I just got it for kicks.  :)

If I remember correctly, I had 20 supers and some 30 power bombs. Yeah something like that, I had 10 supers before entering Torizo room. You kinda scared me with changing super missile tanks place but that was an awesome change as well because you can still pick it up while Torizo is waking up so it does not affect anything.

EDIT:
I made a little smv about the early Space Jump. This particular smv does the deed a little easier way than what I described before. This way you cannot hit all four of them but at least it is easier to execute. Still, of course this kind of trickery requires some save states and maybe even some slowdown (I used 85% or even 49% at some points so that I dont have to wait for the optimal gap every fourth beetom, it would only look boring to wait a lot before shooting another one). If someone does this without save states, he truly deserves the rank of master  :)
I just beated it with 81% collection rate

Time was 11:42, LOL

Don't mind the time, I left the game on awfully long while playing on the internet aiwebs_008

*Pictures self having...fun with GT...and not in a very pleasant way.  Cursing may be involved in this fun.*

That being said, I'm about to tackle Draygon.

6 E-Tanks
1 Reserve Tank
47/50 Missiles (3 used to rip off the eye from the door into the boss room)
15/15 Super Missiles
5/5 Power Bombs (Hey, they help with wiping away the gray crunky stuff Draygon spews at first :P!)
Beams: Charge, Spazer
Morph Ball & Bombs
Hi-Jump Boots

Nice little touch in the vertical room after Botwoon  laugh new .  Here I am with a couple slain mochtroids and looking at a grey door blocking my way into the next room.  I try bombs, missiles, power bombs, searching for hidden paths, nothing came up.

...I laughed when I went through a hidden passage that leads towards a missile refill station.  Hello lonely little mochtroid!

Nifty touch there indeed.  I was fooled for awhile  laugh new .
I seem to have some sort of syndrome that prevents me to count these e-tanks properly. I had 5 tanks when fighting Draygon and thought pretty damn hard about where to pick up 2 more  :P
Also, I had the image in my mind that you had put the Norfair reserve behind the grapple block, but that was not true either. Yay for the confusion and all !

I still cant figure out what is the item that requires some special trick. Making LN harder without it, eh? ..... Also I dont even have a hunch where could it be. As for what trick it is, I do have a hunch, but I can be sure only when I find it  :)
Draygon has bit it.  Of course...I had all my ammo supplies depleted fully and only 19 energy left (Reserve tank used up as well).  Yeah I used savestates before you even ask :P.

After that, got a couple things in Maridia, then went over to Norfair to get the Speed Booster (Speed Mockball was done much quicker compared to my first playthrough :P).

Time to get loaded up on items before tackling LN.

It's a Power Bomb pack. Are you sure you collected them all before going to LN? You actually can't miss it looking for them, thats why I'm a bit confused. :)

Kidgoku:
Congrats on completion! Time is not important at all btw. Ony the completion counts.

Anima Zero:
Looking forward for GT. :P

Was it the one in Blue Brinstar? That one was a little surprising but the same thing came up already with etecoon e-tank so that is nothing "new"....  :|
I dont have any other intelligent guesses about that.
