Torvus gives you that classic feeling of traveling deep into the planet. Prime had it with Phazon Mines and possibly magmoor-- those elevators last a long time. But MP3 was mostly surface travel, and that's what made the game seem so shallow.
Yeah. In Metroid Prime you could seriously get so lost you would take like an hour just to get back to your ship. Maybe I'm one of the rare gamers who think that is badass. It felt like you really were deep deep within the planet when you were deep within the Phazon Mines and you had to take like 3 elevators and cross like 15 rooms to get back to the surface. Of course this is all my experience from the first play through. After playing the game a million times and of course using sequence breaks here on the site the game feels much smaller lol.
Anyway though MP1 > MP3 > MP2. Prime one just has amazing gameplay, style, and is so enjoyable for me. Oh and beam system/visor system in Prime one kicks corruption's stupid beam stacking ass. Corruption is great but lacks a little bit of the style from MP1 as you said with the Phazon Mines and Magmoor. Always being within maybe 5 rooms of Ship Access (command visor etc) makes you feel less desperate.
Prime 2 had a few issues with me. First the dark world concept is one I don't ever enjoy much. It was good in Zelda 3 but beyond that I don't like it much. In Echos I really just hate it because it forces you to do a lot of backtracking across content that is the EXACT same but "dark". There is hardly ever any variation in the terrain or areas and the fact that you took damage when not in a light beacon was really lame. The game was actually more story based than prime 1, more challenging along, and may have had slightly better graphics but as many people have said it just didn't feel quite as good as Prime 1.
