I personally liked MP2 a lot. About as much as MP. And I like MP3 the least... But if you're just starting the series then you'll probably like MP3 more.
I'd go so far as to call 3 the best of the trilogy, if only for the controls. If you can get past the very slight and heavily exaggerated "handholding," it's one hell of a game.
Though it does somehow feel a bit unfulfilling in the end, as it leaves several questions unanswered and has the easiest expansion-hunting of the series.

I have speed ran metroid prime dozens of times, super metroid several times and now metroid prime 3 once and yet i have never progressed further than agon wastes in a speed run attempt in metroid prime 2. Prime 2 just doesn't have some element of metroid or something that makes it the lowest on my list and the fact that it just isn't any fun to speed run.
If mp2 didn't come even close to mp, i dont think it will fair much against mp3. Then again thats what everyone else says, i think that MP2 is better then mp in a lot of ways, one of them is most certainly not the the introductions expect when it came to torvus bog and sacntuary fortress. MP did a lot better with its intros simply because it was the first of its time and that garrentes(cant be bothered to spell right) isn't gratification as the best of the trilogy. MP2 however introduced us to something new, an ammo system. In MP as soon as you got the plasma beam, the game was basically over as ridleys boss battle was ridicoulsy easier then it should have been and just about every single enemy was dead in about 3-4 hits. Pretty boring in my opinion, the ammo system added another level of diffculty to the game along with the dark ather damage you would take. Like if your compare plasma to annilator beam annilator wasn't that great, and thats adds more of a challenge because things dont die as fast as you when you would just use dark and light beams and super missles. So it actually made it more of a cool weapon because we have never heard of it before, it makes this awsome sound when its fired and it adds the echos portion to Metroid prime 2: echos. The charge combo in my opinion made it worse as now basically if you use it you better be in a good situation because its costly, but powerful.
MP3's definetly better as MP2, if only because theres something missing in MP2 thats in other metroids. (Alas, Ive played every metroid more then one time, but not MP2.. Yeck. I wish I liked it more... Perhaps if I got some more time in life, I will continue my hard run (quit after boosty) and after that do a darksuitless run..)
Im more thinking if MP3's better as MP1. Because I havent completed MP3 yet, I cannot really tell. But, if there is more Skytownish stuff, I bet it is...

But if you think about it, the same thing happens in the 2D games as well: Get either the plasma beam/screw attack, and things will die. Simple as that. Yet nobody thought anything of it then.
Although doesn't the Echoes in MP2's name come from Light/Dark Aether, as well as Dark Samus's appearance? That's what I've always thought.
Edit: Whoops, I've never given my opinion on this yet.
Echoes is still fun once you leave it alone for a while and come back to it. That's what happened to me when I was getting ready for Corruption to come out and I played Prime and Echoes in their intended ways trying to get 200%. But Corruption blows Echoes out of the water, yet cannot achieve the same magic from Prime in my opinion. But all three are still great games in their own right, regardless of being Metroid games.
Echoes is great, I remember when I played it for the first time. It seemed so beautiful, much better than MP1. I also liked Dark Samus very much, but everything ended when MP3 came out in Europe (I live in Poland :( ). MP3 is way better than MP2 and even MP1. I enjoyed it much more, and Wiimote gives the game completely nwe power. So MP3 better.

Exactly. This is a good thing in games; it's a reward for the player when they make it through the game.
Mr. Shadow: You're definitely in the minority when it comes to opinions of the ammo system: I think a lot of people consider it one of the greatest banes of Echoze-- personally, it killed my experience with the game. I'd also argue that Ridley was extremely hard the first time I fought him (died three times iirc); the Plasma Beam in no way made the battle easy.
I'll have to agree on that one. Sure, the Boost Ball trick made the fight with Ridley rather easy, but that's not something you'd expect someone to know. Plasma Beam or not, fighting him the regular way takes quite a while, and during my first run I made an awful lot of mistakes (damn that tail of his), and managed to die regardless.
Also, iirc, chances are that the first enemy you'll run into after acquiring the plasma beam are those buglike creatures which crawl under the ground, then jump up and try to spit you in the face. They seemed impossible to hit with the plasma beam :o
But still, the annihilator beam made things equally easy. The lower your ammo count got, the more generous enemies started to become as far as ammo drops were concerned, so running out generally didn't happen.
As for MP3 being better than part 2, I think Prime Hunter summed it up nicely - But Corruption blows Echoes out of the water, yet cannot achieve the same magic from Prime in my opinion.
I like Echoes more. I had a lot of fun with it, at least the first time through. MP3 was really boring. One thing Echoes kept from the original was the depth; Lower Torvus Bog comes to mind. In MP3, you can't get very far before you have to leave and go somewhere else. =\
Torvus gives you that classic feeling of traveling deep into the planet. Prime had it with Phazon Mines and possibly magmoor-- those elevators last a long time. But MP3 was mostly surface travel, and that's what made the game seem so shallow.

Prime Hunter said that.
Mr.Shadow: So basically the fact that the final weapon (which you don't need to use) is completely useless made Echoes more challenging?
IMO, Echoes just isn't as much fun as Prime or Corruption. Beam ammo and the dark world were both terrible ideas that shouldn't have made it into the game - ammo is just a bad idea, and the dark world had potential but was badly executed. Those are the main things that made the game worse.

I personally think (minor Corruption spoiler referencing an area)
Skytown was done really poorly in Corruption. It took up too large of a portion of the game, and traversing it was really time consuming and confusing. The whole "omg floating in the sky" thing got old fast; I'd much rather be exploring some actual terrain for the majority of the game.
i haven't played mp3 enough to rank it vs the other 2 but to me it looks like it will be my least favorite one. i found that it lacked in a few areas and the end felt unfulfilling considering it's place in the trilogy.
between mp1 and mp2, i rank them almost equally but for very different things. imo torvus and sanctuary beat the areas in mp1 but mp1 has better intro and ending areas. also, i like the beam weapons in mp1 more (plasma ftw) but the morph ball more in mp2. the bosses are about equal since my favorites are in mp2 but my most hated ones are there too so they cancel out and mp1 had few bosses. the music is neat in both so i can't complain there.
