No no ofcourse im talking about WS shine, the one in redbrinstar is not harder on PAL at all, not that i could think of anyway. But i don't know any PAL player who has done the whole WS shine, atleast not in a run.
I can't think of any PAL runs on SDA that use that trick at least.
>_> <_<
Well what i ment was that i don't personaly know any one who has done it on PAL nor have i ever seen a SMV recorded in realtime on a PAL rom wich shows the mentioned trick. I think someone said that they had done the trick but i don't think that was in realtime.
It's even a very low 0:39 (39,26 to be exact). I still can't believe how I managed to get such a crazy time, having only a 0:42 as the second best attempt.
The most crazy thing is, I was (and still am) slightly drunk while doing this run. Maybe this got me to risk much more than I would usually do, and therefore I executed plenty of time saving tricks, which luckily went pretty successfull most of the time. I somehow felt like playing myself into a rush with alot of self-confidence to try new things all the time. Because of that, I guess from now on, I should only do speedruns when being in slight drunk-mode. :P
I want to thank Lance, Cpadolf, ICheatAtGolf and Tonski for their recent runs. I watched them and learned some interesting maneuvers one can do even when being somewhat limited in his own skills. Your runs motivated me to try another any% once again.
I especially tried to improve Boss fights, as Tonski once suggested me, and attempted a 3 round Phantoon kill the first time. Although it didn't work out yet, all the other Bosses went pretty good IMO. Other than that I managed to execute almost all the other tricky moves pretty well, including the WS gravity statue shine, pillar shine, WS big enemy room shine, and other tricks.
I'm pretty sure this time will be my best attempt for a long time now, since with my current skill I see no way to improve it any more. Now it's your turn guys. :)
I have tried many drunk or semi-drunk (tm) attempts but usually I wound up dead at some point
I knew you have potential to do this one, or even lower, judging from your latest run before this. As I said, you have the enormous knowledge, you just have to put it to good use.
Now I really hope I have some time to get back to the scene and try at least one speedrun more. I would like to break the 40 barrier first and then maybe do the 0:38 and then learn a few tricks more.
Oh, and I havent watched this run yet, I will wait for tomorrow to sober up and enjoy it to the max :P
3 minutes improvement in SS run just like that; consider yourself lucky. Many people haven't done that big of an improvement in 1 run and yet you managed to do so. I think from this point the skill level increases a lot. I'm gonna watch it now, and post some comments edited to this post a bit later.
EDIT: Just finished watching it. The run was awesome, sure there's a lot of room for improvement, but still it was mint. Since everything else was good, I'll just tell what to improve if you don't mind: -Phantoon 2 round (ain't hard to learn) or if feels impossible then 3 round -Super short charge mockball in kagoball room (hard, but saves time) -Botwoon must be hit with pb shield, since in NTSC it's many times easier, learn that it'll save you a minute -Ridley, Kraid and Draygon were pretty damn good in my opinion, but Draygon could've been improved (to tha max) -Very nice tricks used, I'm really impressed As I said, good job Saturn. :) I haven't been playing this game for a long time since the GBA metroids keep pushing my time limit. I'll ge back on Super Metroid next week maybe.
Great improvement Saturn 42 to 39 is unbelivable. Im going to watch your run in the weekend when i have some time. Also i will try to record a sub 40 NTSC run this week now that i have a new keyboard that seems to work much better then my other one. BTW how do you know how low of a 39 you had, can you see that in memory watch or something?
Tonski: Is the Kagoball room mockball relly worth it in a SS run if your not 100% sure you can do it? It can't save more than 5-10 seconds can it?
Tonski: Botwoon PB Shield is sure faster, but the timing must be very exact, or else you just waste time and a PB if you fail, which is why I didn't even bother trying. And no, it will never in hell save a minute, maybe 5-15 sec at max). Same with Phantoon 2 round. 3 round is much more realistic to me, and as you see I really tried it the first time in that run, just failed because of not being able to switch to Spazer and hit him in time the first round...
Cpadolf: Yeah, I used memory watch after finishing the run and stopping the movie recording to find out the exact time. Just entered the "7E1842 (2 bytes)" value which shows the in-game frames going up to 65535, then starting over from 0 again. My run finishes at around 10260 ones, with 2x 65535 passes already done (common knowledge when doing runs around the 0:40 min area), so I just calculated 2 x 65536 + 10260 = 141332 frames, and then just divide it by 3600 to get the minutes (in PAL 3000 because of 50 frames/sec).
Note that this ingame frame counter restarts from 0 after loading a save file from the game itself (like on console), no matter what the actual time already was when saving the game. This however isn't a problem for me since I never use a ingame save.
A easier way for you would probably be to just watch the "7E09DC (1 byte)" adress, which displays the seconds only, and unlike the previous adress doesn't get restarted after a ingame load of a save file. Just add the shown number to the completion minutes to get the seconds of it (in my run this would be 39 min and 15 sec).
And regarding the LN speed mockball in the Kagoball room, it is a risk, but not a big one if it fails. As Cpadolf said, it most likely won't save more than 5 sec anyway, but is of course worth to try if you are sure you can do it.
Sure, all these tricks are risky. I'm still saying Botwoon pb shield on NTSC is a lot easier because of the timing, lowest note in the background music -> shoot button down. Then just jump at the right moment, if I remember right I did it on keyboard first SS run ever.
5 seconds faster? Well that doesn't sound a lot. Think about doing these 5-10 seconds saving tricks in SS run, if you do more than 10 of them it already saves a minute or 2. Besides, Phantoon 2 round and kagoball mockball are really easy tricks, once you get the hang of it it's no problem.
Damn that controller does it again. I tried to play this game yesterday and died at Ridley. :( That barely ever happens. I guess too much GBA metroids make me rusty at Super Metroid.
Phantoon 2 round saves more time than that, especially in an SS, where you can't manipulate his quicker attack patterns.
Sure, if you got the quickest attack pattern on the third round, it would probably be only 10 to 15 seconds longer. If you got the longest attack pattern on the third round (far more likely for whatever reason), you could save 25+ seconds by doing 2 round.
In either case, any trick that saves more than 10 seconds is worth the risk. Just practice it. Anything else usually doesn't have any consequence, which is why you should go for every trick.
And yes, Botwoon PB sheild is insanely easy. I do it just like Tonski does - hold down shoot on the 4th note, jump a split second after the 10th (The second time you hear the lowest note), go only slightly above the hole.
Yeah. With 2-Round and his two fastest patterns, you can get a minute less than Hotarubi's time. The three things wrong with his fight:
-3 rounded -Missed a round -Slowest attack patterns.
All of those combined take away the minute. (and possibly more) I advise that anyone going for sub 35 (Or sub 40 PAL) use 2-rounding. Even segmented, manipulating 2 of his attacks is annoying enough...
You know, manipulating Phantoon to do his 2 fastest patterns is real shit. I mean not shit, but the crappiest shit ever. Even in my recent sub 40 attempt (segmented) I ended up with first round fastest and second round average, still not slowest.
This makes me cry. I hope my friend takes GBA SP away soon so that I have more time for Super Metroid, I suck at this game now. Besides the controller creeps me: sometimes it works a bit above normal, sometimes the left on d-pad hardly works at all. If only I could get like 10€ from somewhere maybe I could get a new controller. :)
Did another 00:41 SS run yesterday 8-) Though appart from good boss fights it was the direct opposite of my last run, this time i failed many tricks like gravity shine, torizo skip, pre dragoyn shine, top WS room shine (missed one enemy) and LN plillar room shine took two tries.
The overall speed was amazing though, better then ever before and the boss fights were good, Phantoon made ALL of his 3 quickest patterns, botwoon 1 round! Dragoyn 3 round and ridley fight was probably the quickest i have done yet.
I think that if i can up my speed a little more and still pull of all those tricks i could get 38, if i then learn phantoon 2 round 37 is finally possible :P
Tonski break his SNES controls when he try torizo skips. This must be very hard even impossible on console and especially PAL versio single segments run.
But very great job man. You beat my own PAL segmented run whole 6 minutes.
Are you planned 100% runs on PAL? My best is 1.10 and best SS 1.13.
I have no planns on a 100% run at the moment, someday i probably will do one, most likely after a new run is out so i wont start training on a old route but at the moment i feel no pull towards doing one. A low% seems more likely, if i have the patience that is.
And about the torizo skip on PAL, it's very possible to do on console, in fact both moozooh and i have uploaded videos of us doing it in realtime on the PAL version, the smvs can be found a couple of pages back.
EDIT: Yay post #9000 8-)
EDIT: I have finished my third NTSC SS run with keyboard, and have successfully made it another minute faster though i am not satisfied yet.
In fact I'm amazed that i failed so many tricks in one run and did so many really embarrassing mistakes (check as an example the room before the first supermissile and the room before the speedboster) that i at first was so ashamed that i did not want to post it and still got a 00:39
Well if you record it and let us at M2K2 watch it we can probably decide if it's good enough. My guess is that it is though.
Could you list what tricks you used/didn't use and if you made any noticeable changes from hotarubis run? Also a list of your savepoints and times at them would be nice.
I don't think i could do it single segment but i will be able to record it soon
anyway i used basically the same tricks that hotarubi did, except with the pre wrecked ship shine (as we all know we can't do the super missle door thingy) so it by jumping onto the missle platform and shooting a charged shot then sparking. It took a few tries but i got it eventually.
another one that i did that hotarubi didn't was the pre draygon shine. (I didn't even know it was possible on pal) and that saves allot of time.
What saves did you use? I guess Redbrinstar, pre-botwoon, LN elevator, gunship. Am i right?
Also you should then have had something like Redbrinstar: 11 Pre-botwoon: 17 LN elevator: 22 Gunship: 27 or something...Am i right
And i presume you use dragoyn 2-round? Just masterd it myself so as soon as i learn phantoon 2-round (is it easier to hit him with pb shield than to hit botwoon?) im ready to go sub 38 segmented :P Then hopefully sub 38 SS... to bad dragoyn 2-round is random :|
