I bought 15 more scientists but I don't see them in the research window
One shall stand, one shall ball.
They'll take a bit to arrive.
Seeing as you are brand new to the game, sadly I have to say that you should expect your first few months to be rough as you get the hang of things, especially the missions themselves.

And they won't be there for a few days - anything you buy takes some time to arrive at the base.

ah okay that makes sense.

should I just dumb all my weapons and stuff onto this ship, or is this good?

You can check that if you go to the... dang, what tab is that? Base Information I think it is. Look for one that sounds like that and click on the "Transfers" button anytime you want to check when things/people you've purchased should be arriving.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Click Base Information and find the Transfer button at the bottom of that screen to see how long it'll take stuff you buy to arrive.

As for the Skyranger, definitely get all the rifles and ammo on board. The rocket launcher and pistols might help.

okay my only gripe so far is the weird stroke thing they put around all the letters. a sharp font without it would've made it a little better I think.

looks like it'll take another 72 hours for the scientists to arrive.

loading my ship with guns and ammo.

I don't use grenades much but many people swear by using them liberally.

Some of that might be due to a graphical filter in DOSBox, I don't know how you might change it though.

Good rule I go with at the beginning is to make sure you have enough weapons for everyone and 2 clips just in case. At this point I don't really run out of ammo except for anything dealing with explosives but you never know when you'll need it.

As soon as you get laser pistols and rifles though standard pistols and rifles will become obsolete, but it's always good to keep some of the other higher powered weapons for a while since they can be pretty useful. Personally I give everyone a grenade since I use them a lot and they've saved my guys more times than I can count.

Edit: And it'll be a while (several months unless you are unlucky) before you see any of these guys, but be very afraid once you see the guys in my avatar show up. Not sure if you've followed enough of our discussions to know what they are or not.

so now that I'm ready to kick some alien ass, do I just sit on the geoscape screen and wait for one to float by?
Club 27 Goals
weapons and ammo are important for my beginner survival, I'll remember that.

Yeah pretty much. Bump the time up to 1 Day if you want.

Oh, also, the AP ammo for the heavy and auto cannons is shit.

nope, but either you or Tbob had that same avatar months and months ago from what I remember.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
If you intend to use either cannon get some HE and I ammo later.

That was my avatar for a bit, yeah.

damn, it got away
I just added that yesterday or the day before, but it's an image you'll come to know soon enough.

That'll happen sometimes, your interceptors are kind of shitty and can be out run and your starting radar is garbage.

Which reminds me got to Build Facilities and get yourself a Large Radar. It'll help once it's finally done.
Club 27 Goals
scientists got back, 25 working on laser pistols.

the menus are feeling pretty nice so far, I like being able to click on something and it just popping up. That was something that always annoyed me to no end in similar strategy games, all the bullshit fading and window animations.

so far xcom is "pretty alright" on the cool meter.

does it matter where I put it? I put it next to the other small buildings.

No not really.

Yeah the interface can be clunky but the menus work very well.

If you want to get REALLY power game-y there's a way of laying out your base to make it more easily defensible, but don't worry about that right now. Base attacks aren't very common on lower difficulties.
Club 27 Goals
I know I shouldn't have but I'm getting attached already.

time to go fight aliens and level these guys up.
