Seeing as you are brand new to the game, sadly I have to say that you should expect your first few months to be rough as you get the hang of things, especially the missions themselves.
And they won't be there for a few days - anything you buy takes some time to arrive at the base.
You can check that if you go to the... dang, what tab is that? Base Information I think it is. Look for one that sounds like that and click on the "Transfers" button anytime you want to check when things/people you've purchased should be arriving.
Good rule I go with at the beginning is to make sure you have enough weapons for everyone and 2 clips just in case. At this point I don't really run out of ammo except for anything dealing with explosives but you never know when you'll need it.
As soon as you get laser pistols and rifles though standard pistols and rifles will become obsolete, but it's always good to keep some of the other higher powered weapons for a while since they can be pretty useful. Personally I give everyone a grenade since I use them a lot and they've saved my guys more times than I can count.
Edit: And it'll be a while (several months unless you are unlucky) before you see any of these guys, but be very afraid once you see the guys in my avatar show up. Not sure if you've followed enough of our discussions to know what they are or not.

nope, but either you or Tbob had that same avatar months and months ago from what I remember.
the menus are feeling pretty nice so far, I like being able to click on something and it just popping up. That was something that always annoyed me to no end in similar strategy games, all the bullshit fading and window animations.
so far xcom is "pretty alright" on the cool meter.
If you want to get REALLY power game-y there's a way of laying out your base to make it more easily defensible, but don't worry about that right now. Base attacks aren't very common on lower difficulties.
