Don't get me wrong - I think it's awesome music. But it just doesn't sound metroidy at all. I felt like I was going to find some dude banging on a piano around the next corner. I think metroid music should be dark, foreboding, esp with a techy edge to it. Pretty much all of the music in Super could be described by most of those adjectives, and it happens to be my fav metroid soundtrack. Even original metroid had better music than the primes, imo. Ridley and Kraid lair themes set an awesome tone to the whole area (and they're fucking awesome, too).
I liked Phendrana, Downed Frigade, Ridley's theme, and Metroid Prime's themes (and their Metroid Metal equivalents). Well, the first parts of the Metroid Metal's Phendrana and Frigade. And maybe add some of the "Forest Navel" from Pikmin in there too...
I hope that no one does anything stupid with the Other M music... like make it all head-banger's hard rock. I can only handle so much BOOM BOOM BOOM! until my head starts throbbing in sync with the music...
Heres some music that I think would be good in a metroid game: (some of them have lyrics, which of course would not be good, just looking at the music only)
It seems very plausible that Kenji Yamamoto (the main guy behind Super Metroid and the Prime games in terms of music) could well have done Other M's, too. The only thing he's done since Corruption is some work on SSBB (I assume mainly focused on the Metroid tracks)

According to this page it is suggested on this page that it is not Kenji Yamamoto. You'll have to forgive me but my Japanese isn't worth squat. So, I can neither confirm nor deny it. Someone else will have to translate it. Google Translate offered no clarification.
Past Metroid games have been composed primarily by Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka
Well, the first one was. The themes cropped up again every once in a while, especially the title screen theme (dammit I want Kraid's theme back. Not Kraid though).
I don't know how I missed that page, this has been an aspect of Other M that I, personally, am quite concerned about. Maybe I just forgot I'd seen it or something. I'm quite glad it's someone new. It's not as though the old familiar themes aren't going to be in it (I mean, it's not like they haven't got much to work with) but it does mean that the music will make the game stand out significantly from the Prime series, which I think is what they're going for.
Fusion was great because it established a theme in the opening cutscene and ran with that track for the entire game, off and on, with different intensities appropriate to the situation. Manalishi's right though, they have enough to work with and being set apart from the prime series is important if Metroid is going to thrive ever. Also, that wrecked frigate music is just beautiful, I don't play Prime anymore without going in there, that place is just great.
I really dug that music, yeah. Green Brinstar in Super was the most upbeat music in the game, otherwise a lot of it was slower. This theme I think did a great job of fitting the area. It wasn't too in your face, and it was during the point in the game when you're most likely to be running in circles confused, so it doesn't get annoying.
