I like Big Butts and I can not lie
Quote from DeltaForce502nd:
Mecha Ridley takes 30 missiles, 10 for the glass shield and 20 to destroy the body(or 6 super missiles) [...] 100% run with 30 for glass shield and 60 to destroy body(or 18 super missiles).

Mecha-Ridley actually takes 28 missiles (10 for glass shield, 18 to destroy itself) and both of those are tripled in 100%

Man, I hate doing the diagonal bomb jumps needed to get early Varia.  Getting to the room with the acid isn't too bad, but beating those pitfall blocks...  urgh.

I could be mistaken, but I assumed the fastest route involved IBJing immediately after bombs, getting the 2 missiles and etank along the top of brinstar, drop through the leftmost shaft and go to Kraid, skip the ziplines, then get the missile tank under the normal post-bomb halls then.

And turtle, I understand it's kind of tough for some, but I personally try to ignore the pressure of not having that block to fall back on if I mess up. I think of it as a normal bomb jump.
I didn't find it to be too horribly difficult overall.  The blast radius from the bombs in ZM is much greater than in super, giving alot more room for error in timing.  What I did find was that it was hard to be consistent about it. I guess i don't have the patience to save and reset everytime I screw up.
IS this TRUE ?

Yep. Still sucks.

Plant barrier about 4(?) map blocks to the right of the elevator room, no bugs in sight to eat it.

I thought that was common knowledge at this point
depends on what you mean by common.

It also depends on what I mean by every other word I said

I suppose it should be, I just never tried to skip power grip before.

Okay, really, screw Mother Brain.  How am I supposed to do this?

...more specifically, is there any real trick to not getting hit by the thousand and one things trying to kill you, or does it just take an amazing amount of clairvoyance and save states coordination?
Depends, are you speedrunning or just playing casual? Screw Attack really makes the battle alot easier. When the glass has been broken, just jump to right before MB and kneel. Fire shots in her eye diagonal up and when she's about to shoot that eye beam, morph into a ball. Oh, and while you're there, shoot the rinka's once to freeze them. That should work. :)

Neither, I'm speed running casually.  That is, I'm making an effort to go faster than a snail's pace, but not trying for any records or anything.

Anyway, I don't have Screw Attack (or Hi-Jump, which I forgot to pick up when I was in Norfair, that's going to bite me in the butt), so no easy I-Frames.  I know about the "land on the very edge of her platform and kneel for an easy kill" method, and I'm sure it's very easy once you're there, but it seems that I can't freeze the Rinkas and land correctly on her platform in time to off her before the Rinkas thaw.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
If you aren't going for any records it shouldn't be that hard really, Brain doesn't attack until you've hit it with four(?) missiles so you have plenty of time to freeze/kill rinkas and keep an eye on the turret fire. Just duck down on the right block, fire three missiles, check for incoming threats, deal with them, fire super missile, jump over eye beam.

If you time it wrong you'll may be knocked into the lava by one of the projectiles and have to dodge the beam again, but that's much better than getting hit by the beam and falling into the lava.

It's five missiles, actually.

Also, it's the whole "it attacks after you've recovered from being knocked off the platform" that's my main problem.  Gives me no chance to reorient myself such that getting hit once almost always dooms me.

Also also, the escape is giving me a lot of trouble, too, when I do manage to kill MB (which has been thrice so far).  I don't think I'll ever take Hi-Jump for granted again.

Oh hey the last post here was me too.

Different thing now, though.  I'm going for early Super Missiles in Crateria and no matter what angle I shinespark into that first slope (above the door leading to Power Grip), I can't regain the speed boost.  It acts as if I'm hitting a wall and just shuts me down.  Is there, like, a different version of the game where they "fixed" this (would seem counter-intuitive on the devs' parts considering the overall spirit of the game)?  Otherwise, any tips for consistently getting the  right positioning?
lol no way
As I recall, when doing it with the diagonal up-left shinespark from the ground (rather than directly left from atop the pillar as in the site's example video), the positioning was about getting Samus's front foot to hover just on top of a piece of foliage/ground matter at the bottom of a slight two tile slope. When I look at that video I think it was at the part where the ground goes the lowest. So you'd crouch to charge the speed against the pillar, then run back left to just before the lowest part (there are two slight downhill slants), and position Samus's front foot to appear to stand on top of the foreground elements before shinesparking.

But no, I don't know of any version differences for this problem. Weird!

Yeah, I've tried it several dozen times now and no dice.  It could be me just being bad at it, but I began to suspect that I'm missing something after the first dozen or so.

You must be holding forwards while you hit the slope for Samus to start continuing to run, rather than hitting the slope like a wall

If that's all it is I am going to be rather upset with myself.
Is it possible to get the Screw Attack without the Varia Suit or any Energy Tanks?
Quote from PokeyTroid:

Sure, you just have to take the long passage under norfair that opens when you kill ridley (requires speed booster). 99 health should be enough to take the path out via the grub miniboss.
But only if you grab the Wave Beam and Speed Booster...

I guess you need to pick up the Varia Suit in low% runs?
Low% doesn't need to pick up the Varia, no. There's not a single hot room you actually have to enter, so that's a non-issue, and Screw Attack isn't part of the required items for Low%. The only Low% route which actually requires Varia, is 10% Hard with Screw Attack... which is probably not the route you wanna pick up for that one, lol.

Either way, I personally do pick up the Varia suit for Low% runs, mainly for Tourian. I like having an extra bit of security there, as having the Varia against Metroids actually enables you to survive their attacks with fair ease in case you get grabbed. Low% is already quite the unvoluntary reset heaven as is, so I didn't wanna make it even more so, lol. But optimally speaking, you'd want to skip Varia.
