Ahh yes, I figure it's about time I can bring this hack to more people's attention than just those who frequent #jzd. First order of business: the goods!

Crateria: 80%ish
Brinstar: 5%ish
Norfair/Wrecked Ship/Maridia/Tourian/anywhere else: 0%

Super Metroid: Remix will have revamps of every room in the game, with no changes made to the door locations. Some areas will remain remnescent of the original game in certain aspects (namely the smaller rooms with tight size restrictions), while others will be wildly transformed into completely new looking areas. Another notable difference will be the order in which some items are acquired. There will be no custom graphics added. Instead, all new tiles are made from pieces of existing graphics found in the game or simply imported from other areas.

Game difficulty will range from easy to challenging and there will be no advanced tricks like mock/speedball required to progress, only wall jumping, mid-air morphing and the occasional shinespark. The aim of Remix is simply a new interpretation of the original. An attempt to recapture the feel of exploring Zebes' alien environments for the first time and never knowing what item, puzzle or enemy waits beyond the next door. Well, unless you know there's a save room on the other side. =P

And now, I'll end this post with an older YouTube video I recorded. A lot has changed since this clip was made, but it will give you an idea where things are headed. Consider this the official trailer. Enjoy yourselves, and feel free to make comments/suggestions/compliments/insults/threats to my family as you see fit.

Thread title:
the metroid is a lie !
so someone else has made minature metroids too, sweet i made some as well Very Happy
I like! The design looks great, the mini metroids are hilarious, and you changed the item moosic. Cool!
I usually don't pay much attention to half hacks, since they frequently don't change enough to interest me, but you're clearly putting a lot of effort into this. Looks like you're doing a good job of making things look new, and making the environment more dangerous without going overboard. I'm looking forward to this.
Should probably change the map to accommodate room changes, though, if you haven't already.
the metroid is a lie !
just realised that the metroids don't follow samus, shame lol.

They look like a graphic swap with the Rings Rinka from Tourian.

Nice looking hack. :-)

Edit: I swear. I was thinking if Ringu, but I knew that wasn't it.  aiwebs_015

Man, whenever I see someone use baby metroid enemies, and they aren't friendly, it makes me sad inside. Crying or Very sad
This still looks like a great half-hack, though. Nice mix of tiles from other environments in the game!
Wow this really looks great!  Love the rinka/metroid babies.  Can't wait to play!

Sweet, yet another hack I look forward to.  grin new
And if you give up on this one or abandon it, I will take your family hostage!!  laugh new Razz laugh new  I love the mini metroids, by the way.  You should make them cause metroid damage should they touch Samus.
What'd you say?
Looks awesome, love the rinkas! You actually gave me quite a few ideas for a hack. (I may or may not be making one at this point, I gave up on Chozo Memories  aiwebs_003 ) Keep up the good work!
Seems you've found your own style for designing rooms, this really looks like it would be fun to play. I hope you're putting some thought into map design as well...

You have a unique level design. It's what I love most in hacks I play, I'm definitely looking forward to this. Stay true to your vision and you'll most certainly finish this.
As you progress you'll realize how much fun it is to begin rethinking map layout. Give them some comfort in nostalgia before they realize how different your world really is.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
We need the ability to throw a Morph Ball to catch one of the Metroids.  And then level it up to attack the enemies, or is that another game?Wink

I like your level design - it's quite gloomy and dark, which suit the early parts of the game.

One thing I'd mention regarding secrets, though, and I've noticed this with a few hacks.  If you're hiding an entrance / item, it's good to always offer a hint for its location.  It may be an obviously odd tile, it could be a plant or a strange angle on a tile, but it means the observant players will be rewarded. Very Happy

Way ahead of ya there. The only secrets that won't be hinted at in some way are ones like you saw at the very end of the clip. If you walk into a small empty room, you automatically know something's up. Aside from just hiding items though, there are going to be quite a few secret shortcuts in some rooms that won't be so obvious. Once the X-ray is acquired, scanning over previously explored rooms will turn up some interesting things...

You mean moving doors around and such? It's hard to say. I've read over SMILE FAQs and user posts about doors, but it's all Greek to me. That, and a part of me wants to follow through with preserving the same door layout through the whole game so it stands out as a particularely nifty half-hack.

Aye. Thankfully the changes'll be minor and easy to make, so I'll sweep over and knock them all out at once as I finish up each area.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback, folks. All the more incentive for me to see this project through to the end. For those who enjoyed the Rinkatroids, you should get a kick out... Pipetroids! Dunna dunna dunna. I've got several other ideas for enemy facelifts, but I'll keep those under wraps for now.

There's plenty of helpful people around here who would gladly aid you in comprehending the more advanced aspects of SM hacking. Starting out with a half-hack IS a good way to learn the ropes, though. I'll be looking forward to this one.

I s'pose I'll report in with a little update on some of Brinstar's changes. Many of the new tiles aren't shown (I can't go giving everything away before it's released now can I?), but I'm very happy with how things are looking so far. Annnd I've still got room to import quite a few more.

Yeah, Brinstar is going to rock balls.

Things are coming along quite well with this hack. Here's an overall progress update:

Crateria: Done! Well, except for 3 rooms.
Green/Blue/Pink Brinstar: 30%ish
Red Brinstar: Done!
Kraid's Lair: Done!
Wrecked Ship/Norfair/Maridia/Tourian: Untouched

For those of you who don't visit or frequent #jzd, here're a few more delicious screens:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh169/begrimed/KraidLurve.png - So... I decided to paint some custom graphics after all

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh169/begrimed/Palette.png - Hoorah palette editing
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh169/begrimed/crateria.png - Oh yeah, did I mention I know how to make custom backgrounds now?
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh169/begrimed/brinforms.png - Welcome to Brinstar, where even the inanimate landscape would like to see you dead
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh169/begrimed/KL.png

In addition to going back on my plans of only using in-game graphics, I've also decided (after learning how) to start moving doors and room locations around. I'm not setting a release date, but here's to hoping I can keep full-steam ahead with this project and see it completed before the year's up.
I'm suprised at how much content you show and how little attention this gets. it's frickin' amazing, and I'm really glad to hear it'll most likely turn out to be a fullhack :D
. . .
Like I say on #jzd, your amazing Grime!

Can't wait to play this!  Kraid's Lair is looking great, can't wait to see what you do for his room!

If he makes a video, the dudes and ladies will flock. Screens are just hard to REALLY get into.
He did make a video.

Obviously I meant a new one, captain dorkus. I'm the pilot, you're just the random unnamed ensign, soon as we beam onto the planet's surface some alien's gonna put you in your place.
UnSealed And UnBound
First off, the expanded rooms in the first 2 minutes of the video fills my heart with a warm and soft tingly feeling  extra_smug

To make a very long compliment short, I love your work, (no homo) And keep it up till ur game is released!
Ouuuuum
Why, thank you. I have every intention of doing just that, but even better.

Also, I've made 4 videos actually, but only squichigo's been privelaged to see the 3rd and 4th ones, which'll be making an appearence in his collaborative tribute.

And just so this post isn't without some sorta content, here, has a screen.
