...and I thought I'd share some encouraging words.

It might be because my expectations were extremely low, but after 60 minutes of gameplay I'm happy to say that I walked away with a very pleasant taste in my mouth. The Fusion influence is immediately apparent- over-dramatic monologues, "Sectors" that are practically ripped from Fusion, and enemies from Fusion that I recognized immediately but have never seen fully realized in 3D. Since I liked Fusion, this was a treat for me. Well, besides the monologues.

Gameplay is a lot smoother than I expected. Combat is fun and easy to pick up, but surprisingly challenging once the game picks up a little bit. The over-the-top finishing moves are pure cheesy fun, and I didn't mind them in the least- it's more interesting than just another explosion, anyway.

To be frank, though, I might have preferred that the 1st person gimmick was removed entirely. As it stands, it's an interesting shift in perspective that reminded me a lot of Paper Mario. But not being able to move is pretty weird and limiting, and you normally have very little reason to go into 1st person mode since enemies surround you so fast that you're bound to get knocked out of it. The only exceptions are when you need to take out enemy re-spawning points- which was a terrible idea to begin with and reminded me unpleasantly of Hunters.

Beyond that though, it was banging on enough of the right cylinders to keep me hooked. Combat is extremely fun and pretty smooth, the environments and enemies are very nicely varied, and the Metroid feel is actually still present (if only in a bite-sized form).

The story is actually not all that bad- the biggest issues lie in Samus's absolutely terrible voice acting and the very poorly written monologues. If you can get past those, though, it's not nearly as bad as I expected (thus far).

I'll add to this as I play through. These are just my first impressions. So far, I'd encourage everyone here to buy it, although I'm not sure if I'd pay full price.

What's wrong with her voice acting?
Indie Lover
dunno, i liked it...
As I said in another topic, I've pretty much had no issues with the story, voices, or dialogue. Not the best we could've gotten, but certainly not the worst either.

for me, it felt like her monologues were forced and kinda unnecesary. there's too much of them too.
the rest of the cutscenes were alright imo, apart from the ending which wasn't how i expected it to play out.

Kind of like The Conduit's which people said was bad.

bad voice acting is pretty much inexcusable these days. videogames have budgets now.

It was bad. I've heard worse, yes, but I've definitely heard better.

The cutscenes themselves were actually pretty cool (very cinematic), but every time Samus began one of her drawn-out monologues I just roll my eyes. It's really poorly written and the voice actor didn't make them much better. Feel free to disagree, but I'm pretty sure anybody who has an ear for solid VA can tell that Samus's delivery is pretty sub-par.

That said... yeah, the cutscenes were cool. Just too many of them.

SOME of samus's dialogue feels a little forced, but most of the voice acting is pretty good.
lol no way
Friggin, I've only played an hour or so, but I really like some of the enemies in 3d. The dodge mechanic is pretty fun too, but my favorite thing is just spin jumping down from high places.
Almost happy
But IGN says the Story is engaging, and the focus on it instead of gameplay is a huge step forward for Nitnendo (because as we all know games should not be about playing, but watching and listening). How can you all diss on it when it is so obviously not only great but also a sign that better times are coming from Nintendo!

Has anyone ever cared about what IGN has to say?

I like an engaging story, but that itself doesn't dominate my opinion of a game, unless it's an RPG.

they always say that trash. i stopped taking them seriously like 5 years ago and that was late already.

gaming journalists are laughable at best. they're one of the things that's wrong with the gaming industry, along the current storytelling and annual "sequels"(which are like expansion packs).
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
The plot is idiotic. Plain and simple.

Aside from the expected bullshittiness (item authorization [big fuck you to Adam on waiting on the Varia suit, especially], linear, 100% unbreakable, stupid d-pad controls/pointer switching) I'm actually having a good deal of fun with the whole thing. I guess going in with expectations at pretty much the bottom of the barrel left room for me to be pleasantly surprised. Combat is fantastic, and it might actually be keeping the whole thing from falling flat on its face.

I tentatively dub it better than Echoes.

If I had to make one complaint above all other complaints, it's that it completely ruins Samus as a character. She comes across as a whiny prat, nowhere near the hardened bounty hunter that came across in all the other games. Utterly shameful.

going from blank to whiny prat is hardly ruining the character. it just turned out to be something we didn't expect.

I'll take blank over annoying every time. I'd consider that a pretty big downgrade.
Club 27 Goals
I think the Ridley scene is a good example of Samus coming off as an annoying "prat". Before this she faced lots of big bad guys in the face and showed no emotion, but now as soon as she gets growled at by Ridley she starts to break down. What's up with that?

Tomatobob, you must be a smart man, because I find myself agreeing with you a lot.

Badass silent protagonists win over annoying bitchy ones any day. I'm really hopeful that future Metroid games won't follow this course, it might actually ruin Metroid for me.

Played about 3 hours now, so I'll give a quick review.

"Large" battles are epic.
Regular battles are basically: "Hold a direction and press 1"
The story isn't ZOMG, but if you just sit back and let them tell it it isn't that bad. Samus' VA is relatively poor, but you start to zone out her voice and just take the important things if you have subtitles on.
What I F***ING HATE are the "Hide and go **** yourself while you spend 20 minutes trying to find this one minute thing" portions.
The "RE" style portions aren't bad. They try to give atmosphere, but Samus needed a run button for those sections.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
haha i'm noticing a pattern as far as hate goes. can't imagine who would have thought pixel hunts were what's been missing from the series.
So I've been playing through a little more and my impressions have changed somewhat.

- Graphics range from decent to underwhelming. Occasionally there will be an expansive vista or large enemy that's well designed and well rendered and I find myself impressed; more often, though, low-res textures permeate the visuals and there really are moments where I wonder if I'm looking at a N64 game. Animations, though, are consistently excellent.

- Boss fights are, by far, the best part of the game. They're epic, challenging, varied, and extremely cool. There's also quite a few of them, so if nothing else, Other M can be remembered for having some of the best boss fights in the series.

- Puzzle solving reminds me of Metroid Prime... to a point. The only time I've never been "stuck" on a puzzle is when the thing I'm supposed to grab onto/shoot just wasn't very obvious. Whoever designed this game must have mistaken "running around clueless" for challenging. I wonder if he even played Metroid Prime.

- Cheap deaths are starting to become a nuisance. There are times when I'm knocked into a pit of lava, inexplicably frozen in place, only to get struck by a monster and thrown back into more lava where I die. This happened enough times for me to wonder who the HELL thought it was a good idea to freeze Samus in place whenever she gets hit by an environmental hazard. This is, after all, a game in which fast reflexes is key.

- Storyline is growing on me. Like others have said, once you get past Samus's annoying voice, it's actually somewhat decent.

More to come.

people who say this game looks like an N64 games must have owned a different N64 than the one i have.

the 2D games have some cheap death iirc. Tourian in ZM is pretty fucked up for example. the devs probably focused on the 2D games mostly since Sakamoto himself just ignored the prime series for better or worse.

I do have to admit though, as bad as they are now, unless they're dynamically created per save file, they'll be much MUCH more permissible in later runs.

The game is turning out to be Fusion 2.0 in every way. Not the second coming of Jesus, but the return of the 12 apostles.
Everything bad that everyone HATES will disappear with time, and those minor annoyances will become the large problems with the game, BUT will be dependent on the player. (I know what people mean with the graphics, but that hardly impacts my fun with the game)

I don't see how knowing the answer makes it less bad, it's still there, it still happened. Yeah, it's less show stopping but it still breaks the flow, just a little less than it did before, and there's even less reason for it.
