...and I thought I'd share some encouraging words.
It might be because my expectations were extremely low, but after 60 minutes of gameplay I'm happy to say that I walked away with a very pleasant taste in my mouth. The Fusion influence is immediately apparent- over-dramatic monologues, "Sectors" that are practically ripped from Fusion, and enemies from Fusion that I recognized immediately but have never seen fully realized in 3D. Since I liked Fusion, this was a treat for me. Well, besides the monologues.
Gameplay is a lot smoother than I expected. Combat is fun and easy to pick up, but surprisingly challenging once the game picks up a little bit. The over-the-top finishing moves are pure cheesy fun, and I didn't mind them in the least- it's more interesting than just another explosion, anyway.
To be frank, though, I might have preferred that the 1st person gimmick was removed entirely. As it stands, it's an interesting shift in perspective that reminded me a lot of Paper Mario. But not being able to move is pretty weird and limiting, and you normally have very little reason to go into 1st person mode since enemies surround you so fast that you're bound to get knocked out of it. The only exceptions are when you need to take out enemy re-spawning points- which was a terrible idea to begin with and reminded me unpleasantly of Hunters.
Beyond that though, it was banging on enough of the right cylinders to keep me hooked. Combat is extremely fun and pretty smooth, the environments and enemies are very nicely varied, and the Metroid feel is actually still present (if only in a bite-sized form).
The story is actually not all that bad- the biggest issues lie in Samus's absolutely terrible voice acting and the very poorly written monologues. If you can get past those, though, it's not nearly as bad as I expected (thus far).
I'll add to this as I play through. These are just my first impressions. So far, I'd encourage everyone here to buy it, although I'm not sure if I'd pay full price.
