Yea,

I figured that out during my practice segs for my 100% video guide. You just have to time the switching on and off of hypermode to make the most of it. Makes life sooooooooo much easier! Wink
I'm sure when I finish the run you all will point out dozens of places where I could have used Hypermode to make it easier. :P

Haha, wow, awesome. But it's so much more bad ass to not use Hypermode.

Getting hit by those really flickerbatting hard-to-shoot rotating metal things of doom? Don't even pretend you've never fallen off. >_>

You mean the ones you can just Hypermode through? >_>

Man, I wish I knew that a while ago. That is awseome.

And thus the choice between badassery and speed comes into play.

Thing is, in most runs Hypermode won't be used while on the ziplines because of a) limited energy, and b) it doesn't actually save time; it just makes it easier. Shooting those things isn't that hard (I never fall off anymore), and I think the ziplines will be a fun way for the runner to exhibit how quickly they can dispatch them.
I'm pretty sure they will. You don't tend to lose much energy at all outside boss fights, and you can go Hyper on Hyper difficulty with one tank a lot more often than you'd think (I use Hypermode throughout the entire Mogenar fight, for example). Odds are you'll have plenty of energy and it prevents getting frustrated as hell. Sure, if you can hit them all you can show off a bit... but if you don't, you fall off, lose some energy, and get annoyed. Also keep in mind that they take a few more hits on Hyper than they do on Normal/Veteran.

You don't lose energy for going into Hypermode. You lose energy for shooting in Hypermode or letting yourself get corrupted. You can go in to avoid shooting the things, get hit by them, and then go out of Hypermode with no health lost. If two things take the exact same time, but one is easier with no chance of messing up, you're going to choose that easier one.

Not if you want to show off, which is a major part of speed running.
TAS speedrunning maybe.
Speedrunning is not showing off, it's going fast. Elysia is well over an hour into the run and I'd much rather play it safe and go hyper on the ziplines than risk falling off several times.
seriously, i consider myself an avid gamer, and boy oh boy, does hypermode setting test my abilities.....

after just beating (finally) DS/AU313, major props to anyone doing it on the one energy tanks worth of the phazon level.....

good luck man, can't wait to watch it
I don't think it would actually make any difference in regards to speed with the zipline... unless firing at those enemies causes you to slow down, there should be no difference in the time taken to travel across...

I will definitely be making use of hyper mode for now on though. I wish I had thought of that before. I will say that I am infinitely better at shooting those bastards now than I was the first time... that sucked.

That's exactly the point. If they're the same speed, why not do the one that will guarantee you don't mess up?
Hypermode works great against Omega Ridley's bombing runs by the way. Wink
Hyper's good for almost everything except enemies with attacks that give you hypermode failure (Steamlord, etc). Hm, wonder what would happen if you somehow got hypermode failure on Phaaze... :P

Also, peteyboo, check your PMs.

That would be very funny.
I wonder if that has anything to do with the game automatically giving us the Hazard Shield after Omega Ridley. It's the only logical explanation I can think of.

What does?
The reason they give us the Hazard Shield automatically being connected to Phaaze somehow. It was just a random idea based off of your "Hypermode Failure on Phaaze" line, but now that I analyze it some more it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Since you don't get Hypermode failure from the acid rain or fuel gel once you get Hazard Shield I tried to say that's why they gave it to us automatically for something simlar on Phaaze. But there's nothing there to interfere with us like those two items do.

Random speculation, I guess. I don't really know what I had in mind when I said that, now that I look back on it.
you never know ...
Well, I'm not doing a 22% speedrun attempt at the moment, but I purposefully lost a lot of energy before the Pirate Commander fight to see how well I could do.  I began the fight with one etank, 46 units of energy, hypermode conditions.  I know it has been said that you can defeat the Pirate Commander on one hypermode.  I tried repeatedly to do this, and would autovent right when he went into Hypermode himself.  Then, I would have 46 units of energy left, so I couldn't enter hypermode anymore.  So, the only way I could defeat him was to...

1. Enter hypermode and gather energy from other enemies.
2. Enter hypermode a 2nd time and go after the Pirate Commander and other enemies to get some more energy.
3. Enter hypermode a 3rd time and finish of the Pirate Commander.

Now, I know that entering hypermode 3 times is really, really bad for a speed attempt, but I can't figure out what else to do.  Doing it the way I did it took 1:38, which is pretty bad.  If you defeat Pirate Commander in one hypermode, the fight is supposed to take what...30 seconds?

I made a vid of this and was wondering if someone could give me some advice of a better strategy.  I've read other strategies on here, and those have helped me to an extent.

Hypermode-ing him while he's in hypermode does more damage iirc.
The strategy I use is:

-When the fight starts, immediately go into Hypermode - SA around the arena, exiting and reentering Hyper in mid-SA
-When the Commander enters Hyper, hit him with a couple fully charged shots
-When the Commander warps away, kill one of the Commandos for an energy refill
-Kill Commander with second Hypermode use, use remaining phazon to kill Commandos and after you run out use x-ray + nova

Works pretty well, I've got him down to fairly consistent with this. It's still one of the most difficult fights in the game, though, so if you can find any ways to improve it, please tell me (more worried about staying safe than going fast).

Also, there's no way any actual run will enter that fight with 146 energy; it's very easy to have 199 by the time you start it. The room before this one has a bunch of crates with energy refills, and if that fails there's a bunch of Phazon at the bottom which will heal you.

(by the way, in my 3:18 run, I auto vented during the second Hypermode use right after destroying his armor and was able to kill him by setting him on fire with Nova. :P The health he dropped was sufficient enough that I could reenter Hyper.)
