I doubt Saturn will reveal its location any time soon... Giving up is not an option! I was bored last night so I did some shinesparking in the turtle room but no luck there :)
What I wondered was if Saturn would unveil the hiding place IF everyone gave up, or if he would simply sit and laugh as an especially evil final boss at our incompetence...
Well, Lance is right. It would be too early to spoil the X-Ray location yet. After all this is the only thing that makes this hack still worth a check, even for those who already finished it. Maybe I will give some more useful hints once the hack reaches it's 1-year release date celebration though, if nobody still didn't got any pointers to it until then. :)
Quote from Tonski:
Has the X-Ray position changed during new versions of this hack?
Although I wonder what difference would the answer make at all, no, it kept it's location always same from SMI v1.0 on, and it won't be changed in the future either.
Oh and regarding Ridleys HP, yes, he has 18000 like in original, just with Super Missile damage cut by 2.
Also congrats on completion, Cheruben.
PS: Cpadolf, maybe in 5 years I will fully tell it's location if everybody gave up until then. :P
I doubt Saturn will reveal its location any time soon...
Dude, it's right behind Jupiter! It's even circled! :^P
Okay I haven't had enough time to play lately. I'm trying to get back on track in terms of sleeping habits, and I have to cut out major portions of recreation time. Hopefully I can beat him before Sunday. I've had ZSNES open since I started my Ridley hunt. >_<

This really made my day, thank you :D
I guess I have searched the x-ray for the longest time and I am not ready to give up just yet. Sometimes time and patience are running low, though. I just hope the solution will be something very awesome, instead of something dull and disappointing. Well, I have faith in Saturn in this matter.
I had some time so I decided to get back to playing. I played a little while and all the sudden I had finished Impossible again =)
I broke my earlier record time of 2:27 with this new one, though this one is only 2:21 but it is still better than the last one. I tried to remember all the places I have to go so I dont wander around too much. I had to use many save states for nothing just because I went wrong way sometimes and realized it too late. This smv provided should give newbies some help with their gameplay, but it can also spoil everything so..... I just hope it plays allright, since I have had some rom issues lately... this rom (Super Metroid (JU).smc) I have patched should be the same I have used before and it has worked despite being a bad checksum rom. Emulator used is snes9x 1.43 improvement7.
I hoped that I would get some fresh ideas for x-ray when going through all those rooms again collecting other items on the way, but I got nothing.
Kraid and Phantoon fights felt way too long and I guess they were. Crocomire and Spore Spawn were pretty fine. I collected enough items for Draygon and I also snagged the Space Jump early, once again :) Ridley was almost too easy (!) :D I got some fine glitching going on when I was collecting the "behind Crocomire" e-tank. (health alarm sound keeps going on even after collecting the e-tank and spacejumping with the regular spinjump animation) I tried to do some other tricks and glitches too to make it at least somewhat interesting to watch. After all, the smv is over 3 hours long. This is not a TAS, so dont bother pointing out I missed this and that thing there.
That is the very same reason my guess would be something like 1:30 or so.... I think my gameplay was not that crappy that it justifies over a halved completion time for a TAS. Though that very much depends on what kind of tricks can be done to speed up the whole thing (besides the luck manipulation)
- Damage boosting is reduced quite a lot, especially in the beginning. Some enemies must be avoided too.
- Maridia is very slow with power suit, even with all the arm pumping and 1-wall walljumping
- Some refilling is mandatory and it takes some time as well.
- Boss fights cannot be done very quickly because of the low resources (except maybe Phantoon 2-round with those 15 missile packs, maybe even 1-round but that requires quite much. I have no idea if Phantoons HP or any values have been altered).
- How much of the items can be skipped and still make Samus rush forward
- How much items are needed to complete this game after all? What is the minimum amount of e-tanks to survive in Lower Norfair, what about ammo....
My favourite will always be version 1.0 with all the tricks and glitches that are exploitable (especially using CF to reach places), someone should do a TAS with that :D
We will probably never know since I doubt anyone will lay that much time TASing this game, maybe someone will do a TAS (me maybe) but I don't think anyone will bother to find optimal item sets.
Okay guys I finally beat Ridley. -_- I had to manually refill my energy until I reached 150, then set it back to auto in order to get grabbed before the reserves kicked in. I just barely managed to get the energy refills right before I died. On the plus side, though, I'm really good at fighting Ridley. :^D
Mother Brain time. 12 etanks, 4 reserves, 170 missiles, 40 SMs, 35 PBs, morph, bombs, springball, SA, Hello-Jump, SJ, Speed Booster. Can I get some charts? :^D
Actually, I entered the first dino phase at 36 missiles. Maybe I need to glitch through the zebetites. Did you guys need to CF during the battle at all?
And I'm assuming you have all beams, because otherwise the fight will take a ridiculously stupidly long amont of time, as opposed to just a ridiculously long time.
There's no possibility of saving the aminals at all, is there?
Actually I never thought about the animals at all, and thus not sure, since I especially designed the escape to be barely possible without them. With perfect moves and high TAS-quality speed it should still be possible I hope. I think it's interesting to find out, so if nobody does it, I will try to make a quick TAS of the escape to see when I come back from work at evening.
The x-ray wont be found by shooting some floor and ceiling on the way :D Also it is not in a "random" place, I bet Saturn has put a lot of thought into it, just to screw attack with our mother brains :)
Anyway, I think we all would appreciate it very much if everyone refrain from using foul play with the x-ray search. I am sure it can be found more easily with some hacking, but where is the fun? (and dont tell me it is not fun after a few hours of searching, it might still be for some)
EDIT: wow, talk about timing.
About rescuing the animals... I doubt it is even possible, there is just not enough time to do it, TAS or not. Pretty cool that you forgot about animals but they are still there as usual. I can make it to the room, but that is just about it.
I doubt Saturn did something as stupid as to hide x-ray in a random block.
I also think that Saturn did something to the SMI rom so it was impossible to hack (or something like that)
Actually that is true. I can't just get into the rom and look with smile. But I know off two other ways to hack a hack. Though I did only use it to get pallet changes. ^^
First I partly watched your run Lance, and it looks pretty good. Your only major mistake as far as I noticed is in the first heat room of Norfair. Why IBJ it up?? I moved the platform a bit up, so you can easily make it to the top with just a walljump. :) Also nice boss strategies, I especially liked your Crocomire tech to refill when he spits his fireballs. Pretty easy, save, and successful most of the time. Good job!
2nd, I just finished the Zebes escape in TAS style and...
managed to save the animals while still having 10'91 on the clock left!
I never thought it's possible with having that much time left, to be honest. In fact I didn't even optimize the TAS to the fullest. Also I used Lance's runs savestate for the escape which was handy right after watching it.
Although I highly doubt that this will ever be possible in realtime, this should be the ultimate goal to achive someday. :)
Anyway, here is the smv for those who want to see it:
