In fact I may even end up starting again, because the code is a total mess - I'm trying to clean it up now, because it's rapidly becoming unmanageable. In addition the splines that form the curves on the sides are wildly inaccurate at the moment.

@ark: What I'm really hoping to do is to make a big render with all four of the balls from prime (morph, spider/varia, spider/grav, spider/phazon). Since varia / grav / phazon spiderballs are all the same structurally (just change of textures involved), it should be pretty simple to just swap a few colours and get all three (and of course the morph ball is more or less already done).
Cool im planing to morph all of the ones your going to finish with Gimp and maybe make a Destop Really Cool DjGrenola.

I've had a few requests for a wallpaper of it, however this presents a problem: Rendering a big one will probably take a week, so I only want to do it once. Can people who want wallpapers of it tell me what resolution desktops they use ? If nobody who wants to use it has anything larger than 1024x768 then I don't need to render it at 1280 or (perish the thought) 1600.

I need a supercomputer. I've already investigated ways to try to cluster all the CPU in my house (about 8 GHz worth) for raytracing, with no real success.

Maybe I could start one of those supercluster projects like SETI or folding@home ...
Don't worrie i tiled it andyways it would be better if the origianl morph ball was trasparent like the first one making light go though but it is still wicked awsome.

yeah I figured 1024x768 would be a forlorn hope these days. I'll probably go with 1280x1024 then. I'd have no problem at all with you hosting them, after all I've taken so much cool stuff away from here and the SDA, and never put anything back apart from a novel way to crash echoes. mind you, I suppose that's a fairly cool thing to do to echoes.

I'm thinking about rendering one of the morph ball scenes from Prime now, something like the TBJ up the furnace, or bombing out of vent shaft, or the DBJ up to the energy tank in magmoor, or one of the spiderball sections, or something, so if anyone has any bright ideas about a simple scene from prime I could have a go at next involving one of the morphballs, I'm open to suggestions.

First off, these Morph Balls look amazing :). For your scene I would suggest one of Flaahgra's bomb slots, maybe.

early wild might be a cool one.

by "forlorn hope" I mean it would have been nice if I'd been able to trace it at 1024x768 rather than 1280x1024, because it would have been faster, but these days many people use higher resolution desktops than that. 10 years ago everyone was using 1024x768.

i beg to differ - ten years ago i was using 1152 x 864 (only because my father found 1280 x 1024 "so dang tiny". he was eventually overruled). :P

and i also don't believe you've "never given anything back". but i won't debate it; i'll just take your one-of-a-kind renders for my backgrounds page (kindly giving credit, of course). ;P

Hey mang, I think thes balls would look even more realistic if you made the internal lighting brighter, like not a whole lot but still by a noticeable degree.

i'm going to hold off on the big one for a little while because I'm not 100% happy with the glow in the centre of the balls. There's such a lot of light in there that the inside of the brass should be almost white, but on that render it isn't. I'm not happy with the phazon ball either, so there's another 320x240 test render to be done first so I can look at some changes.
