That's because the Power Bombs are relatively weak in the 2D titles.  This is a 3D title, so they would kill anything that isn't a boss (and some things that are).  Including the Starfleet Red Shirts GF Marines.

agreed, when we got lost in maridia? ah, good times indeed...

red pirates without plasma is NOT fun.
Indie Lover
you say as if they are scatered all over maridia...
I just suck at SM, and ALWAYS seem to fall into the red pirate room before I've got plasma.
Armor Guardian
Red? I could've sworn those guys were pink.
Pink is too gay.  They have to be red.
Um, don't you GET plasma in the room with the red pirates? Although yeah, as soon as I say that one or two other locations in Maridia come to mind where the pirates are located. Forget I said anything.
Indie Lover
you do get the plasma beam on the red pirates room IRC, or in a room conected to it, but is not much of a hassle, as they are dumb as hell...

MDb is a cool website.  It has alot of news, links, collections of swag, and BASIC info about the games.

BUT...the forum is....strange.  The majority of the discussion revolves around the fiction of the Metroid universe.  Popular threads include ones that are about fanfics, which boss would beat which boss, what does Samus spend her bounty money on, and an infinite variety of speculation that seems to have been borne from fanatical minds that can't sleep at 3AM.  Very little of the discussion is about gameplay itself, and many of the members seem to have minimal knowledge about gameplay beyond that of the very casual player.  This is all fine and dandy, but it just seems odd to identify oneself as a fan of the series to the point of frequenting an internet forum dedicated to it, and be so...well...noobish.  (I hate that word and that concept, but I can't think of a better one atm, sorry) Speed-running is quite unpopular there, which is odd since metroid is the series which basically started the phenomenon and remains the most popular series for speed running.  I think the average age of the members is pretty low, which might explain some things.

Fanwankery doesn't make a fansite any better. And I don't even know how you can make good fanfics from a series whose plot is so loose and unimportant to the overall experience of the game. As for speedrunning? Well, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but to call it stupid or illegitimate is complete bullshit.

Sounds like with my interests, I would like MDb better.

*goes to hide in a corner*

But seriously, I like to think about how the things in a fictional universe work.  That's half the fun for me.  Speed running is cool (not that I think so when I'm the one that has to do it), but I was the type who played Metroid Prime reading all the lore and data as I went.  I didn't like the scan visor, but I did like that the universe was being expanded upon without sacrificing the gameplay.  Gameplay is one part of the experience, but aesthetics and narrative are another.  There needs to be a balance.
It's clear that one forum has a different focus than the other.  I'm sure my views are slightly biased by my own preferences and experiences, but I don't mean to come off as saying that one way is better than the other.

M2K2 is upfront and clear about what their focus is. Granted, it's not limited to those apsects, but it generally sticks with it. What kinda throws me for a loop is the fact that MDb seems like it's supposed to be about Metroid in general, which should cover the whole experience and have, as you say, balance. I don't think it is balanced, though, when I make a post that is very specific and technical in regards to gameplay and the general response from the forum is that they think it's ridiculous.  I seriously get laughed at for even thinking that way.  To try to be fair, I feel like laughing at the idea of 10 pages of discussion on what Samus eats for breakfast, but I'm not necessarily going to go into that thread and express the fact that I think it's silly.  Maybe the forums should be called something else, or have some kind of prologue or premise describing it more specifically as what it seems to be.

I would only use a site like MDb as a reference, not as an online community.

EDIT: Okay, here's my opinion as to why M2k2 is better: It actually helps get something done. Since we discuss mainly gameplay here at M2k2, we help others to achieve something in their Metroid experience, be it a new sequence break, an improved time and item completion rating, or whatever. But when people ramble on about the setting and plot of a game, it really doesn't impact anyone or anything because it is all words, not actions.

Besides, I think we all know that Ridley could totally own Kraid's fat @$$.

It's all relative, though.  They might think that the works of fiction and discussions are more in tune with 'getting something done' than achieving a speed run goal.

I was strictly talking about the games, not fanwankery. Works of fiction don't impact the actual games, but gameplay does.
LOL I'm probably going to be banned over there if this discussion gets referenced on their forum.

@Idk:  Oh ok, I gotcha now.
