There's no on-screen timer, but the computer voice counts down the minutes in real time, not at scripted points. I intentionally let it run down one time just to see.

Also, there's the part where you have to escape from the Spire before it crashes.

If you look out the window during the Norion thing at a certain point, you can watch the Leviathan come closer and closer and eventually crash.  So yes, you can fail.

Another fun "looks fake but really isn't" countdown is in Zelda: The Minish Cap. There's a bell ringing, and on the third ring Zelda will be killed. The first two rings are scripted, but if you take too long to beat the Darknuts, you really get a third ring. The time limit is generous, though.

Really? Huh, I never had that happen to me. Even on a minimalist run, where I had no sword techniques beyond the normal spin attack. Those Darknuts are a pain in the ass without the great spin.
