Yellow is energy and Purple is morale. Morale is a pretty big one, since if it gets too low your guys may panic (lose all time units, might drop the weapon they are carrying and run in a direction randomly) or go berserk. (turn about in place and fire randomly, sometimes at your own guys if they are close by) Morale will drop as your guys die or due to something else later on but don't worry about that second one for now.

that sounds awesome and more games should have that.
Red is health and purple is morale, losing a soldier decreases morale for everyone a little bit unless they pass some check while an officer is around or something, getting shot decreases morale for the guy that was shot.
Morale drops too low and a guy might panic if his Bravery is low, this is Not Good and will make him useless for a bit but he was probably going to die anyway so who cares.
This is a perfect time to use grenades, or a different tactic I once tried of going into the house and getting below them in order to shoot out the roof from underneath them, causing them to fall down to the next level. (Hopefully without shooting you immediately after)
Damn two on the roof, those guys could be a pain to take out. I spy a Heavy Plasma as well! Not that that matters against the mighty armor that is the coveralls!
You have to go into the inventory to use a grenade. Put it in their hand and then try to use it and you'll get a "Prime Grenade" option which will let you set when it'll explode. Then toss away!
if a soldier has a grenade equipped to them you can check their inventory (the little man icon) and put it in his hand. Then you'll have to prime it and then probably wait a turn to throw because priming takes a fuckton of TUs.
Just be careful of grenades since if you prime them and the guy is killed before throwing it the grenade WILL go off anyway whenever the number of turns you set runs out.
Oh no, he took a reaction shot at one of them. If your soldiers see an enemy they have a chance to fire at them if the enemy takes any action while in their line of sight.
