Actually duh, you could just use the few rooms left of the ki hunter room to charge the spark, lol why didn't i think of this. so yeah no need to short charge here if you're starting out speed running that is. At the moment I can't think of any where else where short charging is actually required Think

edit: heh, there is enough room in the ki hunter room to hold the run button down and get a spark.

so unless I'm missing something important, beginners may wish to tape the run button down with no detriment to the run.
What'd you say?
It wouldn't train them to keep it held down when needed though, which I feel may be of some detriment to their progression as a speedrunner. I posed this question more for the breaking of records, as at that point even a second or two can help.
Yeah i thought that after posting. It's almost like a shooting game where you've had auto aim on for months and then you decide to take it off and realise how hard the game really is.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Speedrunning would definitely be affected.  There are loads of spots where it's used.  Otherwise, probably not.  You'd also never get new players stuck at the n00b bridge again. Cool
Hello everybody...

...after reading a while in this forum i decided to create an account. I have trouble with the zebetite glitch. I can´t performe it. Maybe someone can help me. This is how i do it or rather how i try it: I enter the room and jump immediately to the ledge on the left. I crouch and freeze the rinka when it spawns. I get hit from the rinka from above. Afterwards i move slightly to the right. Then i spinjump into the zebetite. And now i try to jump with a normal jump through the zebetite. But nothing happens... Oh, and Screw Attack is disabled off course.

Does this help in any way?
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
The step that you're missing is what hits you.  The reason you get hit is because landing on the Rinka puts you inside the hitbox on the Zebetite, NOT from another enemy.  You need to disable Screw Attack, freeze the Rinka, then somersault on to the Rinka as far to the left as you can.  The game will force you slightly inside the hitbox of the Zebetite, and you will get hit.  You then somersault back on to the Rinka, then straight jump through the Zebetite.
Thank you for the video P.JMan and thank you for the detailed explanation Quietus. I practiced yesterday and today for about an hour. But I only made it one time trough the Zebetite. Mostly I don´t land inside the hitbox of the zebetite. I don´t know why. So, I have to keep practicing.

The key is jumping as far to the left as you can.  You can even see in the video above that Samus slides down the Zebetite.  When you freeze the Rinka and somersault on top of it, it'll put you inside the hitbox.  You then get hit, and while you're invulnerable, you somersault inside it again, but because you're invulnerable, it can't push you back out like the first time, which is why you can pass.  The only time I really fail it is not getting the second somersault done in time.  Anyway, keep trying - you'll get it. aiwebs_004
Hello, I am new to Super Metroid and I was wondering if you guys had any tips for a beginner. I have done a few 100% runs, but that's pretty much all I've done. I don't really know too many tricks.

Thanks <3
What'd you say?
I would start with the Mockball.

It allows you to get early supers.
Ah thanks, that is actually probably the only trick I knew about xp
I'm still trying to get used to it a tiny bit more and trying to find some more places I should use it in runs.
I pretty much only use it to get the early supers
What'd you say?
Perhaps the short charge? It's useful for crossing the lake without grapple.  You could also work on IBJ (infinite bomb jumping), both single and double bomb.
Ah, thanks a lot! I will definitely practice those, hopefully with some practice with these and mockball, I can sub the 1:20 soon :D

ah thanks PJ, that helps greatly
I'm trying to get into speedrunning this game a bit more seriously, and the biggest time sink I have right now are the boss battles. The biggest problem right now is Ridley I guess, I know you can kill him quickly by dealing a certain amount of damage and letting him grab you but I'm having a really difficult time finding out what that certain amount of damage really is, as well as how much damage the different weapons are. Some kind of in-depth "boss guide" would be very helpful, since there are still a lot of things I don't really get with patterns and so on. Does anything like that exist?
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Not really, no.  There is information out there, but your best bet for current techniques for the game, especially the bosses, would be watching some of the current runners on Twitch.  Zoast, Garrison, etc., all run regularly, and are using the best known techniques.
What'd you say?
You could always open up SMILE, check Ridley's HP, the damage of the charge beam you'll be using and the damage of super missiles/whatever else you'll use. After that, it's simple math and then tracking it in your head. You could also watch some current runners and count their attacks and try to mimic it.

When it comes to Ridley, the man to talk to is Kejardon. His 15% FAQ breaks down Ridley's AI in great detail. He answered some further questions in this post.

That FAQ is well worth reading in full -- there's a ton of interesting info. It's missing a few later discoveries like super-short-charge (which makes 14% Speed actually feasible, maybe even easier than Ice), but what's in there is solid. I doubt I'll ever try 15%, but I do play very hard hacks, and the boss breakdowns have helped me out.
Almost happy
Current record holder Zoasty made an in depth any% tutorial for speedrunning the game just a few days ago so I'd imagine that would be a great resource for getting into running this game.
Thanks a lot, I'll give them a read later when I have time. My bachelor's project just started so I'm prolly gonna have my hands full the next few weeks, but I'm gonna try getting into this in my spare time. Yesterday I was messing around trying to learn the any% route and got to mother brain, but didn't have enough missiles/supers to get to phase 2. IIRC I had 5 supers when I got there and 20 missiles. After a few tries as a last measure I skipped the zebetite skip (heh) with frequent trips to the missile recharge station and hoped that the glass on mother brain's tank would remain broken when I got back. When I got back it had reset, so I had no way to get to phase 2. Is there any way to get around this, or am I just out of luck if I don't stock up on supers beforehand?
Almost happy
Save for possibly being able to break out of Tourian with space/time beam to collect more missiles I don't think there's any way to get around a missile shortage at Mother Brain.

Yeah. Sorry, Snytbaggen, but that's the canonical example of how to get yourself permastuck in Super. It happens to everybody at least once.
