Run: L Aim Up: R Aim Down: None Shot: A Jump: B Item Cancel: X Item Select: Y
Keep in mind you can do the vast majority of all speed tricks without having a button assigned to aim down. It isn't worth having item cancel as the select button just to have aim down as another button.
Nice. I would use y for shoot and b for jump, but I had completely forgotten about assigning L to run. I think I'm ready to play the game now. That is to say, tomorrow.
when i mapped the controls, i tried to get a configuration close to Fusion/ZM since i'm used to that style.
so i mapped A to jump, B to shoot, Y to run, X to cancel item and the others are same as default.
the first time i tried SM on an emulator, i couldn't stand it. i was using an N64 controller and back then i played Fusion and ZM a lot.
last week when i got it, it felt better mainly because i was using a more comfortable controller and because i hadn't played Fusion/ZM for months. sometimes, a game gets better if you don't force or wish that it felt like other different game.
i watched some segments of fusion and ZM today and their speed was much faster. for a bit i thought they were sped-up. i'm pretty sure that playing these games and SM back-to-back is not a good idea.
but i still couldn't get past the item selection system. first thing i would modify if i could change something in SM.

Does anyone know what Z on the GC pad corresponds to? Select maybe - select can be used to run can't it?
That way you can run, shoot and jump as well as aim up and down.
I think assigning L to run is the only comfortable way to play this game. I have no qualms whatsoever to the controls to SM because I can set these controls. At first I was worried because I thought some speed tricks NEEDED aim down. I was excited to learn that you can use aim up instead of aim down for the zebetite glitch. So the only tricks I know where you need aim down is arm pumping (which isn't very useful anyway) and to break the block right by the door on your way to missle pack #1.
I don't see anything super wrong with the controls, yes they are awkward at first because you have less fingers, but once you figure out how to use it, it is fine. I hold my right hand sideways, but I've been doing it for so many years that it doesn't feel awkward. If it is really such a challenge then just put a command on the shoulder, honestly how often to you use shoulder aiming?
don't complain because the game playes you, learn to play the game.
Don't think he meant that Prime is a remake of Super or anything, just that there're tons of similarities between the two games, and they have similar feels.
