I really appreciate the feedback, dudes and ladies.

Okay, I will probably go with Option D (for DMantra who is a genius). It seems like there is sufficient demand for Option B to warrant a possible "alternative" version though. I will have to mull this over. I think I'm inclined to release the "standard" Option D hack as official Aegis play, and provide the "structured" version as an alternative.

Good decision! This will keep the hack playable for average players (like me).

Option B might be difficult to set up, anyway. Some of TASers here will surely show you, how bad you failed forcing them on a fixed path. grin new

PLEASE RELEASE THIS! I CAN"T WAIT! But seriously, this does look good. I don't have enough information to say good/bad and give input, but what I've seen so far looks just about perfect for my playing style. grin new
You've said the exact same thing in about all of your posts in this thread.
Fear Me! (Or else...)
No, I haven't. I try to add some new info in each post (sometimes more successful than others), and that last post I did mention some other stuff. It would be nice if we had more videos and such about it, though...
Almost happy
But really it is just spam with some light makeup...

Keep it on-topic, dudes and ladies, and trust your friendly forum mod with the rest.

Cpadolf, I hope you like underwater grappling, or stutter charging, etc. The path I think you're going to take is ridiculously goofy. I stayed up stupidly late testing it and it is awesome, sweet action in the order you'll do things versus the order I've "intended" for the player. Going to be a very fun watch.

Edit: Removed super tiny mini-spoilers just to be safe.
...I may speed run this xD. I don't know, from what you tell us, it sounds very ideal for a unassisted speed run. But low% Soup comes first.
Unfortunately when this comes out i'll have to wait even longer for Cpa's 100% TAS  :|

Nu uh, that one will most likely be done in less than a month  :D

God! I am getting sick of you guys.
Give the guy some space. He will post updates when he makes em.

Half this topic is bumpish spam right now if you ask me. >_<;

+You don't add any content what so ever with a post with only smilis.

Tone it down, man. I know the internet is SERIOUS BUSINESS but there is no need to fly off the handle like that. :D

Besides, what else is there to talk about? We only have a couple of trailers, the only thing we can do now is to continue to keep up the hype with, you guessed it, bumping.

Bumping threads like that is not permitted on this forum. Just be patient.

I just returned from Costa Rica today... it's been a long four weeks. I will probably throw one last teaser video together in the next three or four weeks, assuming my new semester of classes aren't super-intense. At this point it's pretty much music, bugtesting, and a couple more graphic sets.

I appreciate the desire to keep interest up, but since bumping isn't allowed, you can always ask a question or discuss something about the project with me; I'm happy to keep dialoguing provided that there's some solid content being discussed.
Hated by all
I've been wondering, how long do you expect people to beat this game on the first run? Real/in-game, either way.

And two: where did you get your ideas for the area graphics?

Assuming a player plays through the "intended" path, doesn't get lost easily, and doesn't search for item upgrades, I'd say that it should take 3-4 hours. That depends on how proficient the player is; there's a lot of shortcuts that can easily cut the time down to sub-hour runs, but they're pretty well-hidden. It's also likely players won't always know exactly where to go next, and since it's a fairly nonlinear hack that isn't a big deal, but it does add to total time played. For comparison, I suspect the TAS will be between 20 and 30 minutes for an any%, due to the brevity allowed by backtracking.

If I took all the shortcuts out and made players go through the "main" passages only it easily adds another hour or two. Checking everything that's remotely suspicious will be very rewarding, I promise!

It's too soon to say, though, as I'm positive I will have to adjust challenge level during beta-testing. I'm pretty sure the hack is too easy right now.

Good question. I started with Glacia, saying to myself "this planet needs some snow". After I finished off most of that area, I asked myself "what would be cool to walk into straight from a snowfield?" And the idea of a huge mountain at night just stuck out in my head. Then I decided "hey, you should enter the ship from here", "this game could use a sewer system", "how about a barren desert", etc.

So to answer, I guess I do themes, asking myself along the way what theme would be cool to see next. I try to set it up logically as well, which is why the map looks the way it does--the mountains are up-and-down, the sewers are winding tunnels, the desert is a long stretch with pyramids. Whenever I throw together the last teaser vid, I'll probably show Subverda as well, as it's been the most fun to draw, very old-school Metroid-esque caverns.

Of course, drawing tilesets is also a good cause of headaches, and I admit that none of mine really stand up in comparison to the original Super Metroid, but hopefully the novelty of a new planet will be sufficient enough that you'll all forgive me. I figure we've all had enough of the same ol' Zebes.
The shortcuts are that major? Wow, I definitely feel like this game deserves an unassisted speed run by me just by what you've already said. I also feel like this game gets more exciting with each new thing you reveal to us, I am truly excited for this one.

This is one of the major things that looks like it's going to be very unique - having lots of these multiple secret routes so finding a secret passage might not just result in a random item, but a shortcut forward in the game. It should also allow for people to have less problems getting stuck since they'll have a few "chances" to progress rather than being required to find one specific way forward. It should be very interesting finding all the different passages and such, even after finding the main one.

You've cut down the amount of hits enemies take, right?  :P

I'm glad it sounds fun! Certainly I hope people will speedrun, though not until after they've played through for fun of course. Some time after release I have a contest in mind, prizes and all. ;)

Yeah, I even forget some of the paths I make now. And I also find myself adding more secret ways to interconnect different areas. That map I posted is already obsolete.

Yeah, on your advice of course.  laugh new  I think I'll just need to have them do a bit more damage instead, but I'm leaving it mostly as-is for now, and when beta time comes I'll see what the testers think.

Hi, I'm new to this forum.  I was looking for some good hacked Super Metroid games online and eventually found this site.  The thing that got me hooked was this thread about the upcoming Super Metroid Aegis.  I hear you don't really have to know the tricks like bomb jumping, etc. but you can if that's you're style.  Thank you Acheron86 for giving me something to look forward to.  I haven't looked forward to a game like this in years!!  I've bookmarked this thread, keep up the good work!!  Very Happy  Very Happy

Glad you're looking forward to it. There's plenty of other good hacks around too, though some of them are more difficult than others. Feel free to stick around after reading the rules; welcome to the forums. :)

Ooo, I just had another idea, because you're doing some ASM coding as-is, and this one is (I think) very simple: Could you change the time at the end that you have to beat the game in, based on how long you expect it to take us?
