Pure fast fun?

I kind of miss blowing through mindless waves of enemies, Doom2 style.  I wouldn't mind seeing one metroid encounter like that.

Edit:  I'm just being nostalgic now, but the original doom2 levels were all designed to be played with a 'fresh start' on each one.  Ie, 100 health, a pistol and 25 bullets.  And of course, I did, because it's really the only way the game was fun.  Blowing through stuff with rockets and plasma was quite tedious.  In some of those levels you would be facing off against incredibly powerful enemies, and not have the means to kill them or survive their attacks.  You just had to run away, and collect the weapons and ammo you needed without attracting the attention of too many enemies, and if possible, kill them by getting them to fight each other.  I remember, I think it was level 23?  You started against about 15 imps, which you just had to avoid for a while, and when you reached a main courtyard, about 150 enemies 'woke up,' and you just had to avoid their attacks, running around and through them, for the next 3-4 minutes while they killed each other off.  That kind of insane action just never existed in another game again, that I was aware of.  Maybe there's those games based on china's history, but I never played them.

An encounter designed like that would be incredible in metroid.  Being chased and shot at by an ARMY for a while, while you did what was required to 'win.'  This is not so different from sequence breaking without weapon upgrades.

Because the FPS genre must only consist of games that revolve around tearing through waves and waves of mindless enemies...gotcha...

See below.

Shooter is a specific type of game that revolves around... shooting things.

Precisely: mindless waves of enemies. I've yet to see an FPS that focuses mainly on something other than mowing down legions of bad guys. If it did, it'd be called something different, like an FPA. >_>

Can you tell I don't care for FPSs all that much?

Quote from MP2E_fan:
Well as FPS stands for First Person Shooter (as i'm sure you're all aware of) and it's first person and you have a gun I call it a first person shooter...

Since when does Samus have a gun?

Yeah.

Yeah ark, a huge number of FPSes have a heavy puzzle aspect.

Ready and willing.
Hell, even DooM had some of that. Not much, but some.

MZM!

What more distinctly separates the Prime series from FPS is the platforming.  I can't think of another first person platformer.

(Although now that I've said that, I'm sure someone will come up with one.)

Actually, it had a fair bit of puzzles, but the purpose only to break up the linearity of the level while still forcing the player to go through it all and all the enemies.

Half-Life.

What (perhaps most) distinctly separates the Prime series from other FPSs is how well it does platforming.

I completely agree.  Most of the platforming found in the FPS genre is, at best, annoying...at worst, game breaking.

Half-Life.

I actually do like both Half-Lifes quite a bit. About the only FPSs that really interest me.

And yeah, I'm not talking about puzzles here, really: I realise that most games have some sort of puzzles in them. I'm talking more about the aforementioned platforming and whatnot that makes the game feel more like an adventure than a shootout. I also like how Metroid doesn't really have "missions" like are commonly seen in FPSs: you're dropped down on a planet and discover stuff on your own. Besides Fusion, there's rarely any human interaction which really creates a good atmosphere for me.
This is off topic. Just so you know. I'm getting back on the original topic.

Kraid. Is he an actual creature (i.e., a dog) or was he made? Was he a genetically modified human? How can there only be one Kraid? Or Ridley? I need to go to the planet the SP go to to get these dang monsters. Maybe the planet Phazon o.0
I'll be back. Maybe...
ridley is the leader of the space pirates. it is not known where he came from, but he is not native to zebes, as he is in the official manga, and also is seen arriving in a cutscene in zm. kraid is a natural predator on zebes, which may have been genetically augmented by the space pirates (it's probably impossible for any animal that large to walk on two legs, even with its prehensile tail). draygon is a very large form of the green, projectile-shooting enemies that live in the quicksand pools maridia, but it is not clear whether it grew so large naturally. and as for phantoon, no-one seems to have any idea.

there are many theories about mother brain, but none of them yet explain the humanoid form. she could be a genetically modified human, but that does not explain her presence on the planet in metroid 1. she could be a chozo computer, but then it is difficult to know why she became under control of pirates. probably the mother brain in super is much different from in 1/zm, since she was reconstructed after TIME BOMB SET, GET OUT FAST!
About Ridley... I remember playing this awesome game when i was young on the PC. It was a guy in a (pterodactyl?) suit that had wings that let him fly and he went and saved the world. I Think they made a sequel for the xbox. But anyways, what if a human is inside Ridley?
I'll be back. Maybe...
no. ridley is a single animal, otherwise it would not be vulnerable to x.
What the eff is x?

By the way, i'm sorry if me saying "eff" is inappropriate. Please edit if need be.
I'll be back. Maybe...
fusion.
I just wiki-ed it. Thanks. Any chances of the X ever coming back to fight the metroid prime?
I'll be back. Maybe...
prime is before II. the x are not dangerous because the metroids on sr388 still exist to control them. metroids are the natural predators of the x and therefore metroid prime would not be vulnerable to x anyway.
Oh, I didn't realize MP came before II. My bad.us Thanks.

Since when does Samus have a gun?

Quote:
gun –noun
1. a weapon consisting of a metal tube, with mechanical attachments, from which projectiles are shot by the force of an explosive; a piece of ordnance.
2. any portable firearm, as a rifle, shotgun, or revolver.
3. a long-barreled cannon having a relatively flat trajectory.
4. any device for shooting something under pressure: a paint gun; a staple gun.
5. Slang. a person whose profession is killing; professional killer: a gangland gun.
6. British. a member of a shooting party.
7. electron gun.

Well, look at that. None of those fit Samus' arm cannon. But hey, guess what? It doesn't fit the definition for "cannon" either. A cannon is a "mounted gun for firing heavy projectiles; a gun, howitzer, or mortar". Samus' weapon isn't mounted, nor does it fire heavy projectiles.

Well, let's ignore the whole missiles bit...

It looks and acts like a cannon, and it's on her arm. Arm cannon. A cannon is a mounted gun. Samus has a gun. Arm gun.

Whee, the word "gun" just lost its meaning to me.

Guns fire bullets imo, whereas "cannon" has become widely accepted for other uses besides "mounted gun" or "something that fires cannonballs". You see shit like "lightning cannon" and whatnot in some games.
