I got the game this aftenoon and have spent the past approx. 6 hours playing it.  Unlike probably many people here, I've been avoiding spoilers for a while, so I was expecting a 3D Metroid game.  This is one time when my optimism has failed me.

The game is basically Fusion 2, and my main reason for continuing playing at this point is the hope that I'll get to see Adam die.

One thing I like about Other M so far is the basic style of gameplay, having free movement in all directions, the simplicity of controlling Samus during combat (at least until you need to fire a missile).

Things I don't like are the linearity, the cutscenes, and the obscene number of charge shots it takes to kill some of the enemies.  In some ways, Other M is even more linear than Fusion, because the latter at least had side rooms for you to go into.  Here it's through one room into the next room into the next room, finding the occasional pickup as you go.  And there's many, many points where you cannot go back the way you came.  Plus, saving is mandatory every single time you reach a new save point, which would make this game an utter nightmare to speedrun

Moving on, whoever wrote the script for this game needs to be taken out and shot.  Samus's monologues read like fanfiction written by an overemotional fourteen year old.  And then there's points where you're forced to walk around reeeeeaaaaaalllllyyyy sssllloooowwwwllllyyyyy, sometimes for several minutes, for storyline purposes.  Finally, the relatively frequent points where you're stuck in first-person mode until you've scanned some specific object in the environment are without a doubt the stupidest idea ever, especially since the game is very picky that you scan the exact right location and rarely gives you any sort of hint as to where that location is.

Finally the combat, which is really the entire point of the game, ranges from meh to fun.  Meh is for the annoying minibosses who don't really stand a chance of actually hitting you but still take dozens of charge shots to kill.  Fun is for some of the boss fights.

If I were to give a score to this game, out of ten, rating it as a Metroid game, I'd give it a 2.  If I were to score it as an action game, I'd give it a five.

Come to think of it, I probably should have posted this in one of the five or so other topics where people are giving their opinions, but I'm currently very tired and don't feel up to doing so.
Thread title:
One shall stand, one shall ball.
My experience with the writing comes entirely from the intro stuff, but I can't imagine how that was allowed to get into the final game. In what world does that sound good at all.
When you say you would give it a 2, do you mean 2 out of 10...or?

Anyways, so far I am pretty disappointed as well.  I have to remind myself that it took a while for Prime to grow on me.

I'm really getting the sense that many of the annoying features of this game will drastically reduce it's replay value, which is TERRIBLE considering that replay value is probably the one thing that has made metroid my fav series of all time.  A metroid game that I don't want to play over and over?  How is it possible to fuck it up that bad?
While I agree with almost everything you've said here, I would still rate it higher. I think the gameplay is solid enough to overlook some of it's obvious flaws. But, I'm only two hours in- that may change.

Sakamoto wants the series to go into a very odd direction since he approved all of these cringe worthy moments (before someone blames Team Ninja alone)

this thread could be useful since it looks like the game is a very polarizing one. it seems people end up either liking it or being very disappointed.

adam dies but he just enters sector Zero and then offscreen explosion

My feeling is mixed. The gameplay is great, the story is okay, the where's waldo events are stupid.

i don't think replay value will be hit too hard. the where's waldo moments aren't an issue after you know them, cutscenes are skippable after beating the game , the controls aren't very complex and the route is pretty easy.
I'm disappointed, only because of reading the comments.  I have yet to play it, and was looking forward to for a while.  Still am.

I'm really not enjoying the gameplay that much.  It's like this: run around while charging, turn and face enemy, release shot, hope that auto targeting works, repeat.  And the whole 'press 1 to evade' thing seems so random that it's never really done on purpose, just like the auto-targeting.
Press 1 to evade...? You use the D-pad to evade. It works by hitting a direction right before something hits you. I always just hit the d-pad over and over during fights which makes Samus dodge pretty much everything lol.
Wow!  After living to unimaginably see a Metroid game fail to even get a 9.0, I wanted to see what my fellow Metroid-lovers thought. Smells like mediocrity. How can Nintendo let a Metroid release like this? Maybe so nobody craves a contemporary 'fanfare' 2D Metroid ever again? ..Ok, bad joke. I understand it's no Zelda in sales, but it performs well enough to treat it like Zelda and not release it until it's memorable. I love Metroid so much I have a sick-to-my-stomach feeling! Now I know opinions aren't traaaashing it, but I already know I am going to be EXTREMELY disappointed. I always expect GREATNESS (aka 9.5+) from Metroid..Other M obviously is not! Thinking about getting my reserved-copy money back. Please tell me I'm overreacting.
lol no way
I've played way worse games.
It's not a horrible game, it's still far better than a lot of the other crap out there. There's just some baffling design choices and a number of mechanics + story that are hit-or-miss; it's just not as good as what you'd usually expect from Nintendo. It's still worth playing through especially if you're an avid fan of the series since practically the entire game is full of throwbacks to the 2D games.

You're overreacting. It's far from flawless, but it's still fun to play and the quality of the content itself is up there. There are just a few really annoying things that they could have improved/left out of the game, and they could have also included a little more hidden stuff and exploration.

It's sort of what Fusion might be like if it had 3D graphics and more monologues from Samus, basically.
I really hate the idea of samus getting permission throughout the game to use her abilities.  I miss the thrill of finding and acquiring an item.

I wasn't disappointed.

Granted, I wasn't expecting another Super Metroid, either. It's a new take on a beloved series; I don't think they got everything right, but it was -not- a bad game to play through by any means.
Bananas GOOD, Kremlings BAD
One of the "fun" parts I've encountered are those insta-death moments. Very hilarious.

A complaint I have is that you can't move diagonally. This is very annoying and makes the movement like the original Zelda for NES.

Overall, though, I like the gameplay experience.
At least it's better than most of the shovelware released on Wii.

And this gentlemen cements my belief that the Metroid series has most definitely peaked (after MP1) and has been in a terminal decline since :( It's the reason I stopped SCU and started working on other games instead. I've been sitting on a PAL version of this for almost a week and I have no inclination to play it. I'd rather get back to writing my guides for other - better - games.

i am not dissapointed at all, for me, this game is better than any other metroid...

go figure, perhaps i am the only one here that like action games...
I keep finding myself pausing it and doing other things.  I think I hate it.

How's the action in the game? Are you forced to constantly battle any single enemy you meet, or can you play the game by your own pace?
I've been trying to jump past most of the smaller enemies instead of killing them. The auto-targeting is so frustrating that I use my beam as little as possible.  *sigh*
auto-targeting is a joke in itself anyways

opium, you must have gotten another game, the auto targeting work wonderfully...

and, yes you can just pass by most of the monsters, like other metroids.
