The Prime series didn't have auto-targeting.  It's accuracy depended solely on the player.
And are you saying that charged shots had no use in Prime?

Not as much as here, no. But charged shots are still useful in the Prime series. Prime and Echoes do have lock-on, which is close to auto-aim other than the fact that you get to choose which target you want. (Which is probably what the big deal is)

Err... I meant that charged shots are more common here than in Prime, which is why they may feel more useful here.
So some people wants me to feel bad for loving a game that most don't?

I haven't really had any issues with the auto aiming. Frankly I can't think of a control scheme that could work without auto aiming... its inclusion makes a lot of sense. In my experience it almost always shoots what I want to shoot anyway.

I have more of an issue with the fact that you have to be locked onto something in order to shoot missiles, which causes tons of issues in any place with a lot of enemies; also frustrating in boss fights when you cant manage to get a decent lockon fast enough and get hit for it.
Think Z-targeting with the slingshot in OoT.
what button would you use for that?

I think the decision to exclude the nunchuck is the biggest mistake that was made with this game.
Yeah using the d-pad for movement is a major pain in the ass, the stick would've worked a lot better.
Perhaps the whole wii phenomenon (the simplification of gaming and the huge acquisition of a new market) has nintendo feeling overconfident and made them think they were incapable of making a bad call.
Skipping over the three pages of discussion since I started the topic, I've beaten the game, so it's time I go back and revise my opinion.

Overall, it's not as bad as my first post made it sound.  In fact, when I was searching around during the final collect-a-thon, there were points where I actually felt like I was playing a Metroid game.

Ridley
was awesome and made up for a whole lot of the bad stuff, as did the last two bosses.

The only really bad search moments are the ones early on in the game, except for one near the end that I didn't even realize was a search moment until I accidentally clicked on the right spot.

I honestly wish they'd dropped the story.  The graphics during the cutscenes were very pretty, yes, but they didn't make up for the long gameplay interruptions, terrible script, and bad voice actors.  The plot was decent for a video game, or at least it could have been if not for the above and the extreme overdramatization thrown in everywhere.

The only thing I disliked about the combat was the way they set up missile fire.  Things get a little disorienting when you switch to first-person, especially during the middle of a fast-paced boss fight.

Other than that, hard mode is ridiculous, and I doubt I'll take the time and effort to play all the way through it.
It's forced low%, no etanks, no missile expansions, none of those speed-up-your-charge-time thingies.  Basically everything later in the game can kill you in 1-2 hits.  That's assuming they stay consistent and don't throw in one or two eanks to make life slightly more bearable.
One shall stand, one shall ball.

I hate that qualifier. It suggests that shoddy work should be considered acceptable because it's a video game. Video games have been around for a long time now, most companies should have figured out how to tell a story by now, there are no excuses anymore. We can call it what it is, bad is bad, video game or not.

there's no pickups at all in hard. Ridley's fight is practically a minefield where one bad move = death. at least it doesn't feel frustrating to die.

overall i ended up liking the game. it should make it to the upper half of my metroid ranking but my ranking has some unpopular games in high spots already so i'm not too surprised. Fusion being my very first metroid game also has an impact since the series hasn't been all about exploration for me and i can deal with the linear games. finding SBs is also nice and enhances the game but the lack of them doesn't impact the game in a bad way for me.
the D-pad movement was necessary for some stuff like the speed booster since making it run straight with a stick would have been way harder. overall it does fit the game well since it doesn't really need super precise controls and you never need speeds lower than running.
all the first person stuff is kinda crummy because of control limitations and the over the shoulder parts were annoying. the looking for shit parts were the worst of all but mostly because the scanning is crap. if it had prime scanning, it wouldn't be hard at all to find the targets.
cutscenes and story were alright, considering it is coming from a company that is absolutely awful at game stories. imo, they should try to improve somewhere else and put a story when they have real skills in that area.
the actual level design and enemies were good and i liked what was there. some areas are a bit dull and there were few secrets overall but the ones around were satisfying. it was also good to finish 100% before everyone else so i didn't have extra help and it felt so good when i figured out the more elusive pickups.

the engine does need some work but a new Metroid game using this engine on 3DS and leaving behind the stuff that is slow and cumbersome could be a good alternative to the fully-2D games if they don't make those anymore. unlike prime, i'm open for more games with this style. just no more slow parts and put in more alternate and secret passages (ZM is also one of the more well-regarded games in the series).

I didn't mean it like that.  More like, compared to what one should expect for a game where story is not a major point, it rates as slightly above average.

There's more I'd like to say on this topic, but every time I try to type it, I find myself going off on a tangent.
LOL the guys at the other forum are giving it an 8 or a 9 right from the beginning.  Then the reasons they say that they didn't give it a 10 are some pretty major reasons/gripes.  Apparently it just has to have samus in it to be great.

rofl.
i can't imagine the day we get a Metroid game without Samus what will happen to those guys.
at least i waited until i had done everything to give my final opinion.

I should have done the same thing.  I know damn well that I will end up playing it again and will no doubt appreciate it more with time.  I seriously doubt I will ever hold it in very high regard, though.
lol the other forum is talking about how many used copies are already showing up at the store.  The explanation is that so many people have beaten the game so quickly and have moved on to something else.  Of course it couldn't have anything to do with people not liking it.  *eyeroll*

i see used copies of like, every game in stores the day after release. i'm not sure it means anything at all.
that's the mainstream for you
Me too, but then again most games are totally crap.  I usually don't see lots of copies of highly-rated used games right after release.
red chamber dream
i do. like i said, i don't think it really means anything.
Indie Lover
it just means that everyone need cash, and games are easy to sell used... simple as that...

well there's no way of knowing why people sell back games soon after release. maybe they didn't like it, or maybe they loved it and beat it in one day. or maybe they suddenly needed the money again. who knows.

yeah, games turn up in the used stores always, no matter how good they are or how good they sold.

for example: mp1 was very common on used stores despite being so well reviewed and all.

i'd say used copies are far more rare for games that were far less popular. the kind of games that sell for a load of money in good condition.

also, people buy and sell back the games because that's cheaper than actually renting the game sometimes and you don't have to deal with crappy disks and you get good money back if the game is in great condition.
