someone keeps hacking my rom or my ASM with smile and my computer keeps doing werid stuff. how can i make my firewall stop smile getting into my computer?
rom is a thing u put in ur computer to get the game. i dont understand it so well myself, but if u put it on a disk i think it will let u play it. u mite need an adapter 4 ur comp tho i herd theyre prety expensive
ok blakctoerlsm tomorrow i will get adapter where do they sell adaper?
they sell them at computer shops like pc world and once i got with with a mcdonalds but i think theyve stopped doing them. so if i plug that adapter in will it stop smile hacking my rom?

hey no one ever answered me what is a pointer and what is a bank? does a pointer point to a bank or something this makes no sense also how do they work in asm? and can someone teach me that? also is smile good? I heard it's awesome but I don't want a virus help?
Don't worry about pointers/asm/banks for now, just download SMILE and start out with that. It doesn't contain any viruses

What the hell are you talking about, and please don't spam smileys, they are just annoying.

Wtf are you talking about? If your seriously having problems just delete SMILE.

This topic has suddenly gone from a mundane flow of (to me) meaningless information to a monstrosity of hilariousness.
I totally agree.

What adapter are you talking about and if you don't know where to get them how are you going to get one tomorrow?
Okay, I have a question, I want my hack to be called SM GRAPPLE, but I want to make the morph ball have a grapple beam instead of bombs, that just seems soo much cooler, how possible is this? Could I make a screw attack into "screw grapple?" So when you're screwing the enemies you can grapple right out and run away I realize you couldn't attack alot of enemies but this would be amazing i'd also like to port the hack to the gba is this possible wihtout an emulator? i know a binary translation wouldn't be good, but is it possible? also how easy in ASM is it to make an item disappear, and is there a complete disassembly around?
Okay, disregard my last question. I've already figured it out. so then, I have a rather large problem. I've done some tweaking with a PLM, and I'm having trouble with the pointers in it. there are a few 2 byte pointers that are lower than 8000, and all pointers are supposed to be 8000 or above that. is there something I don't understand here, or did nintendo make invalid pointers in their code? I wouldn't think so, because these "pointers" show up commonly.
Okay ive managed to stop that guy hacking my computers rom with smile. On another note...
When playing with Enemy AI in a hex editor, ive noticed that measured values such as speeds and health and damage and many many other things, which are always a pair of a low and high byte, are proceded by a byte worth A9 or C9, sometimes 29, does anyone know the difference between these, or what they mean at all? :P
OMFG!!! I'M PISSED!!! I was experimenting with scrolling PLMs on my hack and I need a new scroll value, I hadn't been writing any down but I knew I hadn't used "FFFF" and "FFFE". I used those two scrolling values and now my rom doesn't work, room testing function on SMILE freezes whenever I enter a room and when I try just playing the rom the same thing happens. does anyone have any solution on how to fix this? I will be forever in your debt if anyone can help me.
Please, I believe I just wasted three months of my life with this stupid mistake...
FFFF is right at the end of the bank. By saving there, you also overwrote the begining of the next bank, which is probably what caused the crash.
The solution is simple. If this is what caused your error, open up your ROM and a clean one in a hex editor, copy the clean from 7FFFE until something like 80020, paste that into your ROM at the same location, save and close the hex editor, then open and make another patch with SMILE. (Otherwise the current patch, if you tried testing, would be soft patched by the emulator, introducing the bad change again) If that doesn't fix it, I'll take a stab at it, but I'd rather you take the patch of your current work down as I don't want to spoil the hack. Trust me, your work is far from gone forever.
Lastly, this kind of thing is why you should frequently back up your work.
DSO, thank you, but I still have a problem, I have absolutely no experience with hex editing. could you tell me what I would need to know to do this quick? Sorry for the hassle.
Also, what program for hex editing do you suggest I use?
There's a lot of different hex editors out there. I think the ones I've seen used by people around here are XVI32, Hex Workshop, and HxD. I can't tell you which one to use, I'm using some crappy one as I have a 64-bit OS and it was the only one I found that would work on it. Honestly though, any one of those should work. As for using them, you could probably figure out yourself pretty quickly. Just go down until the address on the left is 7FF00 (It may have 0's in front of it, like 007FF00), scroll down until 7FFF0, where instead of FF FF FF you see other values that belong to your scroll PLM information. Go to that same spot in a clean ROM, copy from where the bytes are changed until someplace like 80020, and paste over in your ROM. Save it and that should do it for the hex editing part.
Edit: also, if this doesn't solve your problem (it should but there's always the possibility), you could open up the ROM in SMILE and do a file compare against a clean ROM. The file will be a text document with the same name as your ROM in the same folder. E-mail that to me and I'll be able to use it to find exactly what is causing the crash, without spoiling any of your work.
