If I fix a few of the remaining bugs, and fix a few backgrounds, and revert the few broken rooms in tourian back to normal, then I could release it, it would be a more streamlined version, deff beatable on consoles.  if I do that I could have it done in a month.

this makes me sad because I hate the way I laid out tourian, but I don't have the time to really redo it :(

Drewseph, I beat Redesign quite a while back, maybe a month after I did my last post here.  Tourian was a bitch, but after watching some videos and taking my time to think about EXACTLY where I want to be and when I was able to get through it.  It was mostly about trial and error, and memorization of where metroids would appear from and how many I needed to kill.  I think it took me about 2 days or playing 2-3 hours off and on each time to get through it.  The escape sequence took a few tries too, maybe ten in total since I kept dying there too.

But overall it was very doable.  It's just a matter of putting in the hours.  Overall deaths throughout the game was less than 100.

And reminder, this was all done on a real SNES.  No save states, slow downs, or other cheats at all all the way through.  I don't remember my completion percent, but it was not even close to 100%.  Maybe 73% or somewhere about it.

Time bomb set get out fast!
I've tried a few times to get through SMR without savestates. The section after grapple is where I always give in. I find it funny because of this bit from Brickroad's classic Glitch FAQ for Super Metroid, under "Oddities":

Quote:
In the area where you find the Grappling Beam in Norfair, there are a couple relatively harmless rooms in which you have to grapple over water.  These rooms were obviously designed to give the player a feel for the Grappler, but...  water?  Norfair is supposed to be the planet's core, right?  In fact, at the same elevation as the watery areas, a ways off to the right, are the boiling acid lakes of Lower Norfair.  It seems much more feasible for these  areas to be just regular lava - now THAT would be some REAL incentive for the player to get good with the Grapple...  and quick!

Come to think of it, the FAQ does predate SMR... Drew, since we've got you here, was this by any chance your inspiration?

That's a shame, and I'd strongly consider you persevering, as once you pass grapple, and you get Spazer, the difficulty really evens out.

After looking at it with some months of hindsight I wouldn't change a thing about the grapple room.  It's a good "that one sequence" and leaves the player with a great high after reaching the save station and finally completing it.

One place I would change if I had the ability is a place in Maridia where it's required that the player charge a shine spark, go through a door, and then fall to the right and execute a saved horizontal shine spark.  I think it's the way that either leads to the Space Jump or Dragon. It just takes a lot of fussing around and trial and error in an already fairly quiet stretch of the game.
What'd you say?
The grapple section is what stopped my playthrough on cartridge. With that said though, I agree with Jack about not changing it, regardless of whether or not it's a pain in the ass.
HELP PLEASE!  Hello All.  I love the hack and have played thru it a few times.  This time around I am using SNES9x V1.53 for windows.  I am hoping you can help me with an issue I am having.  From the start I had issues mapping the controls to a USB SNES controller.  I got everything to my liking however every time I use the select button to choose my item it is cancelled out when I jump.  I am in the famous GRAPPLING ROOM and it is impossible to clear this room with the controls this way.  I need to jump then hit select four times to get to the grappling beam then grab only to have to do that sequence again for the next grab.  Does anyone know where in the controls I can cancel this "cancelling" mechanism?  Basically any item I select is cancelled as soon as I jump so I cannot even leave my missles armed.  I thought I could still get through the game and enjoyed the added challenge but this room is already difficult and I feel impossible with the added controller issue.  Any assistance is appreciated.
Are you 100% positive that you don't have jump and item cancel assigned to the same button?

That'd be my guess.  Have you perhaps added any other patches alongside the hack?
Thanks for the quick response guys.  I messed around with the button assignments and got it to a configuration that was acceptable for this part.  I did it in two tries! Thanks again for all the hard work on this hack.

Hell yes!  Maybe now I can 100% it without having to use savestate abuse in some spots.

I'd like to be a tester but I just don't have time.
