Yep, Version 1.2 of Super Metroid: Gravy is finally done.

I created Gravy because I saw most of the other hacks on this site. Then, I heard about SMILE. Super Metroid has been my favorite game ever since I got it, and probably will be until Brawl comes out, so naturally when I found out I could edit the game, I was very excited. I had always gone through the game, telling anyone who would listen where I would've put the items, or how I would've designed the rooms. Now I could, and after I learned how to use SMILE (somewhat), I went to it. The first couple of versions failed horribly, and then I stopped trying to add/subtract PLMs, and Gravy was born.

My main goal for Gravy was to make 100% seem like a real accomplishment, and make the game harder than the original, but still playable. I also wanted the game to seem familiar, but more like a long lost friend than a daily commute. I'd like to think I succeeded, and based on the general feedback, I have. I hope you all really enjoy your Gravy.

The Elites

1. Lance Uppercut (100%)
2. Kriole (100%, currently TASing a 100%?)
3. Fano7 (100%)
4. FirePhoenix0 (100%)
5. Bolognab (83%)
6. Captain Canada (100%)
7. Anima Zero (100%)
8. Cpadolf (66%)
9. Dmantra (93%)
10. metroid3fan (95%)
11. damptraktor (100%)
12. Obbligato (87%)
13. Sturmvogel Prime (69%)

Beat the game but not on the list? Post your completion time and %, and you'll be added.

I'd also like to thank both Lance and Fano for giving Gravy 5/5 stars in the reviews thread. It means a lot to me.

Stuffs. Yar.
Yay! First download! :P Will post with some more info after I play it.

EDIT: Doesn't work with a headered NTSC ROM... Trying a headerless one now... Nope, not working for me... Does it require the PAL ROM?
I used Super MEtroid (JU)!, try that one. If that doesn't work, then I don't know what to tell you. I'm not entirely sure about this, but maybe i can pm or email the actual .smc to electrometer to get it on the hack list.
I got it to work with Super Metroid (JU)! though it is VERY picky about the rom. I even had bad checksum in it, so there must be other possibilities too. With wrong one it did play the start scene, but after I picked Samus A, the screen stayed black and the intro music kept on going.

About the hack.... where are the bombs? You really should double-check for places you can get stuck without the bombs, at least that one room on the left in Brinstar where you cannot kill all the enemies and the door out stays grey.
I like how you added some difficulty to it, even when it is not Impossible-difficult. Some items were pretty cleverly hidden as well, I have already found 1 missile pack and the e-tank in addition to the obvious morph ball and 2 missile packs.

Hmmm.  "Gravy" you say.  I'm intrigued, yet hesitant.  What should I do?

What ever should I do. aiwebs_003

edit: Downloaded, Patched, tried.  I started like normal by choosing the memory slot to start playing but only got to a black screen while the title theme music kept on playing.

Sorry.  No potatoes for this gravy.  :P

you'll have to be more specific. I ran through the hack about 8 times this week, making sure that I couldn't get stuck except a couple of places, but only the ones involving crumble blocks really got me stuck. Oh wait.... Are you talking about the brinstar map computer path? yeah. definitely didnt edit any of the map computer rooms or their direct paths, so I forgot about small problems like that, but that may be the only one.

I am glad you like the hack so far.

Well, I needed a name, and we had turkey for dinner so.....

also, if the rom you used has a header or doesn't have one, try the opposite kind. you may have to add a header to the JU though. I can't remember which kind of rom I used.

I don't know which it is or even how to tell.  :(

do you have SMILE? If you do, load JU into it and go to tools, add a header/remove a header. Ignore the noob alert and try the rom again. If you don't have SMILE, then..... either download it from jathys(that is the right guy.... right?) or well, download it from jathys. I'll go try to find out which kind of rom the patch works for, and maybe make a patch of the other kind as well.

edit: i'm almost positive the current patch is for an unheadered rom. but, i could be completely wrong. I need a knowledgable forum member to check somehow...

An unpatched headered rom should be 3073KB. Unheadered is 3072.

Well then it was definitely unheadered. thanks taco.
Alrighty.  Got it fired up here.  I too got to that room where you get stuck with a gray door, no more enemies to kill, and no (apparent) way out.  aiwebs_007

But it look interesting so far...  With new the routes it looks like we'll get to take.  :)
Just defeated Phantoon. Yes the route looks nice and there really are several places where you really have to think about different possibilities.

The only things I dislike in this hack so far are the colors in lava rooms (in Croc area it was hard to see Samus, pre-WS area will hurt somebody´s eyes for sure) and those stupid platforms and blocks that slide Samus around. They dont add anything interesting into gameplay, they are just plain stupid and irritating. I wish you had used those less, but luckily there are some ways to avoid some of those.

You had some fresh ideas about some boss fights, that was very good. You are controlling sequence breaking with grey doors? I found that one in red brinstar yapping maw room where you shoot super blocks and then shinespark up, but the door was grey so my efforts were wasted  :(  Also I tried to enter gauntlet and some other places early, but that has been made quite impossible. I think it is both good and bad thing. Also nice touch overall in the red brinstar upper area where you get the first PBs in the original.

Gasp! You were able to get past the supers before the gravity suit?  Shocked Well, amazing. Also,
that grey door is enemy based. Without the third row of super blocks, it was quite easy to break into that room much earilier than I wanted, however it should still be possible, but maybe only frame perfect.

Thanks again! I was proud of that red brinstar room b4 powers.

One final thing, those colors were chosen consciously and mainly because, they looked the best at the time. You'll be relieved to know that the gauntlet has normal coloring.
Although the gauntlet has the best accidental Fx ever! check it out suitless to see what I mean

Keep up the feedback!
I went to Gauntlet already, that place was like hell, but luckily my energy did not drain as rapidly as I feared. What do you mean by
accidental Fx
?
Do I really have to...

Jump past those fast moving rippers?

because the other way is...

spikes in water that I don't think I can jump over yet without dying.
You don´t have to jump into spikes in water, just look for

invisible bridge

you should lock your Hack, preventing some guys to look on the maps ~

edit: Maybe it would be nice, if you write some lines over your hack. What ideas you have and so ;) Is gravy a "full redesign" and so on.

edit2: got stuck in the same room like Gaius_4 =(

well, I don't know how to lock it, and I trust that the people who will enjoy the hack the most won't look at the maps. I wrote a little about the hack on the Hack List 2.0 thread. Its a half hack. Oh, and that room is one of my favorites.

While you're in the gauntlet, only about half the time is there lava in the room. I somehow found a perfect fx start place combined with a large tide that makes the lava flicker on and off. It was completely accidental.

You never have to jump past them. They're there to prevent early pbs. Although while testing I did come really close to making it up there, off by about 13 frames.
I have killed Draygon (one of my fastest kills ever with that arsenal, oh boy was he EAZY after wrestling with the one in Impossible) and now I am thinking where the Space Jump is, making it to the Lower Norfair without it seems very hard. That acid does not let you on surface for some reason, so I cannot reach the ledge with gravity jump or walljumping without gravity suit. Nor does it help if I turn the Gravity suit on when I am ready to jump out of the acid.

This is quite nice design and I am relieved that it is mostly the same route as the original, because i am not the type to start searching things for very long time.

A few things

1. Did you intend Plasma to be taken with speedboosting one column off at a time? that was pretty neat!

2. I am surprised to see Screw Attack so early, but that is a nice change.

3. I took the Spring Ball "early" or maybe not (nice shinespark btw)... anyway, how are you supposed to get out of there? I had to CF to cheat past that second crumble block since I did not find any other way

4. Give me a hint about Space Jump or a way how to reach LN, it is too frustrating testing things in the acid all the time.

Oh, and the Gauntlet thingie you were talking about, that was.... interesting.

Did you use the grapple for Draygon? I considered taking that possibility away, but I still wanted to be able to destroy the turrets, and couldn't mesh the two ideas.
#1:
yes, well sorta. did you use a diagonal several times? I used a horizontal once I had full energy. But nice SB nevertheless. It will really help with ridley.

#2:
I always believed that without space jump, Screw attack isn't nearly as useful.

#3:
The springball can be gotten before Draygon, it just takes some careful jumping. Also, a CF was intended for that room. Did you enter with lower than 50 energy, or did you find the hidden spike?

#4:
You don't need the space jump to get into Lower Norfair. The springball is helpful though. The reason it won't let you clear the surface is becuase of invisible crumble blocks. Look for a hidden tunnel somewhere in that room.

Also, did you notice a weird glitch in the room before Draygon?
the crumble block that acts like air? I think its because its right on the surface of the water, but im not sure.

Keep up the speedy progress! I can't wait til someone finds the X-ray scope. IMO, its harder to find than the one in Impossible.  grin new
I sparked horizontally every time to get rid of one column at a time, it was no biggie, but found it very nice anyway.

So THAT´s what the invisible spike was for! No I did not enter with low energy at first but then I took one savestate further away and drained my energy before going in. Kinda cool you have to CF to get out.

I did not notice any special crumble block, there are so many  :)

No I did not use grapple for Draygon, just a shitload of missiles guided straight into his gut.
Quote from Lance Uppercut:

Well that's certainly true. Good with LN and 100%, keep us posted. Oh, and out of curiousity, whats your arsenal total before entering LN?
Somewhere along 145missiles, 30 supers, 25 PB, all beams, both suits, spring ball and screw attack, hi-jump, speed booster.

I found the way to LN right away, but is there a way to proceed? Chozo statue does not react since I dont have the space jump.

Oh shit... Forgot about that little requirement. looks like Version 1.1 will be up later tonight(In like 4-5 hours) after I fix a couple of LN rooms. Just make a savestate of the first LN room and then load it into the updated patched ROM. Thanks for finding that before the hack really caught attention.
Well, I'll have to wait until you put the fixed patch up but until then, what do I do after bombs?  (Clever method of getting to them by the way.)  Do I really have to
crouch-jump in the water to get to Spore Spawn?
