Shocked Wow! That's got to be the best Super Metroid TAS I've seen in a long time. Much more entertaining than the straight runs. The X-ray glitching adds a great WTF factor[1], and makes me wonder where it isn't possible to go now. And your water movement is superb; who needs a gravity suit? Also I love how you frequently narrowly escape death, especially in Norfair.

[1](My favorite moment was using it to just leave the fight with Crocomire.)

Okay, I guess that was my review.

Hah, glad to know someone appreciates the time I spent in OOR travel. (And the time I spent bothering Kej about stuff  extra_smug)

Yar, I focused on keeping the actual x-raying short and sweet, but here and there. I only regret taking SJ and x-raying out, that was just too ugly..

I thought it sucked and lacked effort. I could do that if I cheated.

Nah, I'm kidding. I could do it without cheating. Anyway, it was definately unexpected to see the x ray climb. I really didn't expect the fact you would use it more than once. Also, it wasn't horrible that you used the x ray for the SJ, but not exactly graceful.

Another thing (probably showing my ignorance here):
HTH did you manage to make Crocomire walk forward with your shots? Is it something to do with the type of missiles you fire or something else?
Trained by Cpadolf. Mission: To Perfect.
Well, when you enter Crocomire's room, you can stand there all day and he will just roar at you until you hit his mouth twice. He won't move until you do, or until you lay a PB. (Which angers him greatly, and makes him walk forward)

After the pb is layed, keeping him to walk forward was just a simple trial and error, what I did to change his AI into coming towards me instead of opening his mouth and fire balls at me was when I jumped to be lvl with his stomach, turn-around and shoot. That is what worked for me, I'm sure there's plenty of other ways.

So, arguably, would a RBMB run be possible? It'd be ridiculous and I imagine no one wants to do it, but with X-ray glitching and ST-beam glitch you could probably item hunt, X-ray glitch to get plasma (if possible), go fight MB, ST-beam glitch to get into a save room, reload the save to disable bomb timer, Fight Ridley, glitch past Botwoon, fight Draygon, you get the picture. End it with a Bomb Torizo fight, ST-beam glitch to make entering the ship win the game (or if you prefer, glitch to re-enter Ceres and kill Ridley, THEN land, ST-beam glitch, get in ship and leave right away again).

Ridiculous, theoretical, and weird, yet still I wonder if it can be done. It relies on the most volatile of glitches, but as an SMV the results would at least be consistent (we'd all use the same emulator to watch it).

Err, a few problems I think..

First off, that run does sound intresting, tho I think it would be very long. I had originally planned in this RBO to grab plasma be4 Draygon, but it was just simply ridiculous as to how long it took to acquire it. (A LOT of running and jumping in OOR, too much work to optimize it)

As to glitching to re-enter Ceres.. I've no idea how you'd go about that.. But with the SB, I wonder what time you could get =o

I ofc, would be up to doing this run, if it were actually do-able, and not over 250k realtime frames long, which is about the same length as the 100% run.

IIRC ST-beam can be used to re-enter Ceres; depending on where you use it, I think, it can mess up a lot of different values, including whether or not you've actually been to Ceres (so you'd still fight Ceres Ridley once, but you don't have to "beat" him the first time). So if you use it somewhere and save, you might end up in Ceres next time you load the game, with all weapons intact, and you could obliterate Ridley with plasma, presumably.

That part's theoretical, though... ST-beam is so bizarre. I'll have to test this when I get the chance.

From what I know you wouldn't, for the ceres fight I think that he only has a hit counter and he leaves after reaching 100. The reason that I believe this is that when fighting him in ceres his hp is shown as 32768, and does not decrese when hitting him (also the same goes for crocmire).

Anyway, I'm fairly certain that this run is possible. There is video proof of escaping from motherbrain, and skipping botwoon which are the only two real obstacles not avoided in a ordinary RBO, glitching back into ceres is also proven possible. The only problem I could think of is that it might not be possible to escape from motherbrain after killing her, or that doing so is impossible in Snes9x (different emulators reacts to ST beam differently). I think it is impossible to make zebes blow up just like that in Snes9x, but you can on the other hand skip the motherbrain as shown in the glitched up any% run.

As for lenght, I'd say that it would end up noticeably longer than a normal RBO, but still not extremely long (Can't imagine that it would take more than one and a half hour in realtime).

ST beam resets Zebes, so, only need to deal with hyper beam. Wasn't there a video of sum1 escaping with hyper beam somewhere?

I think reloading a save will get rid of hyper beam (it doesn't store in SRAM IIRC). Would be kind of nice to have it for obliteration of all the bosses, though. ;)

I'm serious about doing this run.. just need solid proof that all the wtfglitches can actually be done.

Will be something to work on when motivation on the any% isn't too high..

I'd personally want to do whatever possible to avoid using the ST-beam.
I'm 99% sure you can get the Plasma beam without killing Draygon or Botwoon, but it'd probably be a bit of a pain. Shouldn't really be important though (see above).
I want to say that you can x-ray out of Crateria Mainstreet and run to a save station in Brinstar before the timer runs out, and from there play the game avoiding the escape path. That's untested, but considering the rooms I'd be willing to bet it's possible. From there, it should be easy to get to Ridley, Golden Torizo... Getting to Draygon before Botwoon is at LEAST possible with Plasma though that would be ugly probably, Botwoon, Phantoon, Kraid, Spore Spawn, and Crocomire whenever you think he'd fit.
Unfortunately, Bomb Torizo would be impossible without the ST-beam. The animals will be there instead.
Trained by Cpadolf. Mission: To Perfect.
But using ST beam in special situations could possibly save so much time, such as the botwoon skip, I wouldn't be surprised if you could use it somewhere to get to a transition and avoid x-raying.

Yes, plasma through OOR is ridiculously annoying both to watch and to optimize. =S

Crocomire is the mini-boss that fits between Phantoon and Kraid.

On the one hand I agree with Kej's sentiments that what ST-beam does is broken in the bad way, so using it is not necessarily a good thing... however, if your goal is to make an entertaining run, I'd say use it whenever it'll save time and not totally obliterate the game. I haven't yet seen it used in a TAS, and I do think it has potential, even if what it does is inconsistent.

If a true RBMB run could be done w/o it, I'd be all in favor for that, but it just seems wrong to not be able to beat BT at the end. Given what Kej said, though, if you want to stay as true to consistent glitchery as possible, a run that doesn't use it until right before the Bomb Torizo fight would also be fun to watch.

Right so, just how many x-ray climbs would there be.. wait.. I have to freaking break into Tourian don't I???

This is where ST beam would come in handy for a quick entry.  extra_smug

Wondering if I should use my glitched LN entry, or enter normally.. would require me to get an extra tank then, and possibly more ammo for a CF. Decisions...

Well, since I haven't been able to skip the big metroid, I don't know for sure if that would work to break into Tourian. I know that if you get caught by him and let him leave, you can't enter the next room. I can only try it again with him on me, possibly I could do a short charge.

I mean, with the ST beam.

Baby Metroid can be skipped 2 ways, Cpadolf and Hero did an uber optimization of skipping it, I found a way with x-ray shortcut.. You need to catch up. =)

Not saying it isn't possible.. I am saying I don't have the ability to do it..

This is quite the watch. I'm curious, though; for a console RBO run, would the early brinstar cleanup be effective? I would be missing the Crateria super missile mainly, but I could make up for that by fighting GT, who really isn't that long a fight and who would speed me up later with the Screw Attack. I'd mostly be worried about the escape from LN, minus the extra power bombs. Thoughts?

Also, way to go on the use of the much-neglected temporary blue suit glitch in LN, but how did you do the green gate glitch from the left side in brinstar?

Ownage positioning.

Youd be missing the guantlet tank and the tank below the charge beam.

I want to let everyone know something that is a break through that Namespoofer19 did, but I would rather not burst his bubble and let him make a topic on it. I would say what was told of it, but it is to much of a hint.

EDIT:

Heh, guess I was fooled then.

Part 3

Draygon and Phantoon ownt.

The entire WS and Phantoon was done by Kriole, because this was the point in the run where I wanted to drop it, and Kriole took some initiation and knocked it out to help get my motivation back.

Thank you Kriole.
Lol this run is teh pwnage. Keep it up guys! Lols at the wall/door jump glitch.
