But the Charge Beam by itself?
You can slow down time in first person and still dodge...
lol no way
Charge beam was the only useful way to use your beam, she shot way way way too slow otherwise, and you can dodge like six times a second so charging isn't really a big deal.

A friend downloaded the game and I ended up playing it a bit at his place.

The bottleship itself is very bland. No idea what they were thinking, however I liked the environment of sector 1 a lot more. Other M might not have the best graphics around, but I generally like its art style/direction.
I found the action gameplay to be surprisingly tight. The auto-aim isn't very precise indeed, but diffusion beam sort of solves that. I like that Samus doesn't completely rely on weird action moves and can still kill stuff by just shooting. Jumping on enemies is fun, though.
So far I don't know what to think about the atmosphere and exploration. It feels even more linear than Fusion in that it usually only follows one route (at least throughout sector 1). I thought it was fun finding my way through most rooms where the goal wasn't painfully obvious, but at the same time I don't think this is what defines Metroid. The maze aspect is completely missing.
People have been complaining about the "Where's Waldo" parts, but I never took too long clearing those. It's usually pretty obvious where to look.
From what I experienced the atmosphere is about the same level as exploration. There are some nice situations where either the overwhelming design of a room or a good choice of background music can still make you pretty anxious. No idea yet what to think of the fact that there's rarely any music at all. After all, previous titles have managed to make you feel isolated as well with use of music.

The end section of sector 1 was just stupid, though. They probably wangted to make the player feel anxious and unsafe, but stretched it over 5 minutes of walking through empty rooms. That's not scary at all. And why was there no boss anyways ...?

Which leads me to the cutscenes.

I actually thought they were well done (cheesy dialogue aside) and managed to get me interested in some parts of the overly generic plot. At the same time I really can't approve of the amount and length of cutscenes the game has thrown at me. The game does something wrong if it makes me want to put the controller down.
Samus' background story reflected at the beginning was sort of annoying, but aside from that only the focus on babies ("Baby's Cry" etc. Are they totally catering to middle aged wii fit women now?) really made me scratch my head when being approached with the game's "story" and Samus' "emotions".

Difficulty-wise I thought the game was far too easy and plays rather cheap, actually. If you know what you're doing you're pretty much a WOMD and if you don't you get easily killed within few seconds. No problem witht he latter, but where's the challenge to experienced people?

Overally I'm pretty positive with the game, though. Really like how the rooms look and play. The difficulty problem must be connected with the game being the weird 2d-3d mashup that it is, do I can forgive that. Other M's probably better in that way than polaying another purely 2d Metroid.
Definitely going to buy this in the future, probably not before around christmas though.
