pretty sure it's total- get 5 kills one round, get 6 another, get 2 then die and get 2 more in another = 5+ 6 + 2 = 13 kill streak. The kill streak displayed is your longest kill streak.

I almost beat him but he killed all the noobs first....damn he moves fast and is deadly!
