Yeah, this is ripped directly from Gamefaqs, but it's a good question and deserves some intelligent discussion, of which it was severely parched there.

Is mother brain the leader of the pirates, or simply a supercomputer that controls the fortress? I'll review the history:

Metroid said that MB controlled Ridley and the metroids specifically, implying that she is the leader. Super metroid supports this, saying in the intro that she was the leader.

So far, it was all fine and dandy, until Super Smash Bros. Melee came around, with a ridley trophy that claimed he was the leader of the Zebesian Space pirates. That was then backed up by MZM, which stated in the manual that Ridley was the leader of the pirates. Furthermore, the manual also expands the M1 storyline to say basically that samus's mission was to destroy MB so that the planetary defenses would be crippled and the Federation could invade. But, in a final twist, the back of the box called MB the leader.

MP gave us an in-depth look at the pirates' organization, inventing something called high command. Ridley also seems demoted to the role of security guard. But, this could just be a temporary power structure while MB and Ridley were being fully rejuvenated.

So what do you think? Leader or defense computer? I lean towards defense computer now, with the expanded MZM storyline, but it's open for interpretation. So, how 'bout it?
Thread title:
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I don't really know, I lean more towards computer though because she is directly connected it the fortress itself and always triggers a self destruct sequence when killed.
I think she's really a defense computer. She seems to just control everything but not really tell people what to do. Kraid I think is basically there to kill all who dare try to invade Zebes. When Samus kills him, Ridley learns of it and decides to kill her personally. Of course, that doesn't turn out right. I think that statue that's the entrance to Tourian is controlled by Mother Brain. She figures Samus is good food for the Metroids, and lets her through. Or something...
I have always thought that mother brain is the leader and everything on zebes taps to it's brain waves allowing her to control everything including space pirates, ridley etc. I think she is just using ridley to control space pirates outside zebes.
Ridley is the Leader of the Pirates. Mother Brain is a super Life form created by the Chozo, and found by the Pirates.
MB is a computer,a dang good one,in that case. That's why there's Metroids,Rinkas, turrets, and Zebizites around her lair. The SP's don't wanna lose it.
Then Again, you COULD go through the back door in Cratieria..hehehe.. Twisted Evil
I'd say the pirates have some sort of organisation within themselves. Ridley might be one of the leaders, but Mother Brain is, to me, someone that's important to the pirates simply because she's so damn smart. She doesn't control the pirates, but they trust her to lead them to new possible sources of power and other piratey stuff. I look at it like a cooperation, I guess. The pirates let the brain do all the brainwork (duh), and the brain gives the pirates advice in return for a piece of the power, and their defense.
So, where do I find out the Chozo created MB?  (If it's one of those obscure comics, forget it)

well, you answered your own question there.

shame too, the comic is a good read.

Anyway.

I think that motherbrain IS controlling a large portion of the pirates, however, she doesn't care much about them, shes just stuck in the tank so she has to use the pirates to achieve her own means.  In zero mission, when she allows the metroids to feed off the pirates, it shows this.

I think that after mother brain helped create the metroids, something happened and made her hate the chozo, maybe she jsut got power hungry and was too tired of the chozo stuff, im not sure yet.

Eitherway, the pirates found zebes, perhaps she called them?  And she used the pirates to help her wipe out the zebesian chozo.
She then probably told the pirates about the metroids, and they went to SR388 and got them back to zebes.  Because of this, they probably got her trust.

eitherway, she started getting the pirates to pull off more of her schemes, probably using "we" while she really meant "me"
"we will control the galaxy!"
either way, she is one super smart mass of brain.

samus shows up, as mother brain was most likely plotting, she, more than anyone else, probably knew the extent of samus' powers, so she wanted samus dead.  Ridley was most likely in control of a large group of space pirates before this.  So she called on him to help guard zebes, so mother brain wouldn't get hurt.

likewise, we konw what happened then.

Anyway, using the magical power of space pirate rejuvanation, everything was fine again by the time super metroid came around, except that mother brain made herself an ugly body so that she had a chance of escaping or something...  I'm under the impression that the NEEDS zebetite to survive, whcih is why she was stuck on zebes.

either way, i think she was the "leader" of the space pirates, they just didn't know it.
Ooh, that's a good "Manipulation" theory.  I certainly haven't seen that one before.
Lemon Zinger Weapon
definatly a comp...why else would there always be a self destruction sequence?
Have u ever seen a brain armored like a tank? (MZM)  Definitly a computer, especially due to the self-destruct thing.

Theory: Ridley is head of the Space Pirates.  Kraid is native to Zebes, so Ridley enlists him a chief of the guard.  When he dies, MB sends out the signal to the mother ship, which makes the alarm in Ridley's chamber (MZM) activate.

So, he comes to Zebes, we all know what happens to him,  :P and both statues are now active because they are controlled by a Chozo life-force thing, so when Kraid and Ridley die, MB has no control over the statues.  She readies the defenses, feeds all pirates to the Metroids (again, acting as a computer finding the best solution to a problem, opens their containment units) so they are strong, then sits and waits.

But, she cant stop Samus, dies, and performing her last comp action, initiates self-destruct.

:End Theory

There's my thoughts on the matter.  Enjoy.  Wink

nice thoughts...that would take me quite a bit of time to think up of
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
I personally don't think that Mother Brain is their leader.  And I don't exactly buy that Ridley is, either.

If you ask me, the leader of the Pirates is "High Command," which is referenced quite a few times in MP Space Pirate Logs.

Heh.. it took me a while to think them up too. :P

Theory:  The High Command referred to in MP is probably a temporary body of leadership established to fill the gap caused by MB's destruction.  As you will note, no other Metroid games have said anything about it.  (because MB and Ridley were revived)  :End Theory

Its possible.
Mother Brain is a biological computer reated by the Chozo to keep under check the environment and defenses of Zebes.

Pirates came and infected her with a computer virus putting her under their control.

She then now works for the Pirates.

The cheerios and turrets were there since the Chozo. They put them there for defense against invaders.

The Pirates came in the back door to infect MB not the front door.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Never thought of it that way, that's an interesting idea. BTW where did people get the information that MB was made by Chozo, i think I missed something.

that fits perfectly into what i said, you are aware of that right?  8)

The E-manga's show the chozo's talking to mother brain, and samus talking to mother brain, during her younger years on zebes.  They are cannon, so mother brain had to be created by the chozo, or at least she was with the chozo's before the space pirates came and took over zebes.  Then she turned evil, for reasons i REALLY want to know.

The space pirates might have uploaded a virus into MB.

Actually, im quite sure that it wasn't a virus, as she shows some hostility towards samus and disagrees with the chozo in the second e-manga.

In fact, the second e-manga was probably her scheme, considering that when the say was saved, all she had to say about it was ". . ."

Actually, you were leaning more toward leader/brain rather than computer, so we only agree that she fed the pirates to the metroids.

Where are thse "E-mangas"?

She is a computer, doesn't mean she can't be a leader and a computer... or a very manipulating computer.
All I know is that the Chozos created both the Metroids & MB. How they connect to each other I don't know. Maybe she was designed to govern the Metroids or something? But on how the MB got into the hands of the Space Pirates, I have no idea at all. Maybe they stole it eh?
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.

Here are the original, japanese versions:

Here are the unofficially translated versions:

both e-manga's are VERY good reads, so i suggest that you do read the translated version

remember that its a manga though, you read from the top right corner to the bottom left.

like this.
