How are the pirates extinct?

Corruption didn't wipe them out because they're seen in later games. There's some IN fusion as well (albeit X-Pirates but pirates were needed before that)
How do we know that the Space Pirates were extinct?  I find it unlikely that they would all have been stationed at Zebes.  Remember they have multiple homeworlds?  Even if they were all captured by the Federation, there would still ahve to be nomadic raiding bands of Space Pirates.

in one of the other M cutscenes, Samus says that they're extinct.

but Other M is before fusion, and Fusion has them...

I think I know the cutscene you're talking about (one of the start ones that talks about the timespan between the SM report and the Baby Cry), but I'm pretty sure she's just mentioning that no one worries about them anymore because they don't seem to be a threat.
yeah what sabata said, she never said they were extinct, just that they weren't problems anymore.
How can space pirates NOT be considered problems if they are still alive?
ANKOKU
Well, based on how easily they go down in the recent iterations...
Yeah, but they could still be a problem. An easily solved problem, but a problem nonetheless.
ANKOKU
Well between SM and Other M Ridley and Mother Brain were dead.

There was no strategist or leader.

So, it'd be like an ant hill or a bee hive with no queen. With no direction the workers would just kinda sit there. (bad examples, but you get the point).

You may get one or two that go out and cause chaos, but ONE space pirate would be easily handled by a local law enforcement.
...Speaking of which, how did the Space Pirates meet Ridley? Or did Ridley meet the Space Pirates?

Internet.
Stupid Facebook.

it happened before samus was even born so we might never find out.
Quote from sabata2:

Yeah, they didn't quite explain how pirates are on the BSL. They're all X clones aren't they? Even so, they had to come from somewhere. (Maybe the same Cyborg ones we ran into in Other M?)

Well, we assume now it's because of what happened on the Bottle Ship.  My guess is DNA was taken from the bottle ship and transferred over to the BSL.

I wonder what happened to the frozen, dead Gigafraug from Sector 2 though.  It never made an appearance in Fusion.  Yet it disappeared just like

About Echoes, you guys are all missing a point: Dark Samus, to all effects, IS a metroid. A heavily mutated and distorted metroid, but A metroid.
Bananas GOOD, Kremlings BAD
she's special, though.  Taking human form, she doesn't "scream 'Metroid'"

yeah. that thing is a Metroid only by name. it doesn't even have real Metroid traits.
I like turtles.
Other than the fact that it still eats energy and pwns Space Pirates.

She DOES in fact own Space Pirates (thinking about the cutscene before the elevator fight)
Heh, that makes me think of that one area in the Phazon Mines where you can drop the shielding and watch as the Metroids are unleashed upon those poor pirates. Twisted Evil Always satisfying to do that.
I like turtles.
I loved that Prime had subtle comedic elements to it (also the Pirate Data in Echoes).

metroid without metroids would be like lord of the rings without the one ring...

kinda boring...

but i like the chozo cult idea...
One shall stand, one shall ball.
What? No. No it wouldn't, that doesn't even make sense.
