Can't be done quickly in fights that demand that you do it quickly, obscures your vision in situations where you do not want your vision obscured, takes you out of the fight, and is slow. I consider that to be a rather large issue. Pointer controls are ass anyway because the Wii is garbage.
Absolutely untrue in all possible contexts. Weapon switching is at Super's level of stupid.
Eh, I always found weapon switching in Super Metroid completely fine as long as you switched the button to not be select, which is a retarded default button for that. I always had much more trouble with the way you do it in the GBA games.
The problem isn't so much with the button as the amount of things you have to scroll through, you only have to press the button once on the GBA. it's definitely not perfect but you aren't going to have to hammer on the button if you accidentally hit the button twice.

It takes a tenth of a second at most, unless you're doing it wrong. And there's no reason to do it wrong.

Never picking up Grapple or X-ray helps I guess :P
Just learn to press the cancel button, or learn to know how many times to press the item select button to get it to where you want. I don't know, I've never in my gaming life had issues over small control issues, unless the game is really bad at it. I just learn to adapt to what it offers and try and master it. Never over analysing it and finding it to be "faulty" or whatever. I enjoy the challenge it presents sometimes. Forces you to be somewhat more of a machine in coordination, speed and dexterity. I guess as a casual gamer you might want super to have no run button or better mapped item select. But I think they done well with what they had, and I like the small challenge it presents. The game opens up when you master it and samus's 'hidden' abilities.
I don't want to be a machine either, but on the other hand I don't want a game to hold my hand. Perfectly mapped controls are fine, of course. I just don't really see the issue with supers controls. I find it perfectly comfortable to claw my right hand and have select mapped to the L button. Everything is where I want it without any delay. i understand some people find clawing hands uncomfortable though...
Something of a false dichotomy going on here. Super's controls aren't the worst in the world, though they have caused the game to age less gracefully than it might've; and having better controls in and of itself is not hand-holding.
As far as I'm concerned Super Metroid's controls only present a challenge when you are speedrunning the game, and even then it's not that often. And if you are speedrunning it, you are probably comfortable enough with the controls anyway. They might be slightly inconvenient at times, but never more than that in my opinion.
Also, I don't find the weapon select/switch/aim mechanic in Kejardon's hack to be easier or more comfortable to play with.
All I mean is if you had run automatic, it would take a huge fun factor out of the game. For me it would and many others. Casual gamers might love it of course, and for all the right reasons. I do understand that.
I guess I'm biased because of how so many tricks have been discovered in this game., That if you change anything control wise, It just wouldn't be the same, and mostly likely will dumb some of it down.

Indeed. They're a minor annoyance that renders a spectacular game slightly less spectacular than it could have been, but it's still a great game.
And yeah, better controls are not hand-holding or decreasing any legitimate challenge. The only challenge that can ever come from poor controls breaks immersion key to games like Metroid.
I'm sure a large part of it has to do with which you played first. Like, I played Fusion before Super, and everything in the latter just felt clunky and a bit primitive after the controls in Fusion.

I played them in the same order. I think what it really is is that Super's controls really are just worse, but they can seem acceptable or even better if you're used to them as opposed to the later 2D controls.
The rest of Super also seemed a bit primitive when I first played it and for a time after. It's since become my favorite of the 2D games, but the controls are the one big thing I can't see as better in Super compared to the other two.
Oh dear oh dear, lets re-phrase, "playing the game casually" then. Not wishing to take the game that little bit further, sequence breaks, samus's trick. Was never trying to create a divide by saying casual.
I think what it boils down to is how much you like the game aesthetically to begin with. This game as a child just blew me away. Transported me to another world just by even thinking about. The graphics, music, everything. I played it casually through the 90's, Then picked it up again about 5 years ago and discovered speed running. So it made an already great game, 10 times better. So if your not already keen on something, you can pick out faults and niggles, which I simply can't do for Super.

This is better you are on your way to a full recovery!
I still very much disagree that a run button adds anything to the experience though, I mean I play the fuck out of Arkham Asylum and I'm still mad about that game having a run button.
