Well, in this case, isn't the Run button abused for a couple of tricks?

I mean, if there had never been a Run button in the first place, no one would know any different, but for a speed run to be all it can be, you actually do need one.

Not saying it's a good thing, but you can't deny the fact.

speed running is secondary to, you know, the actual game. if the run button didn't exist then those tricks wouldn't exist and no one would know any better. and it would be a better game because you wouldn't have to hold run the whole time.

Well specifically in super you have a move called "the short charge" or the even shorter short charge. Without going too in depth you can get samus to her blue state (echoes) there by breaking stuff or able to charge a shinespark in a much shorter distance, and it can be used everywhere. If you have run automatic it will only kick in a a certain point in a run. Again It's not a problem if your not speed running. But personally it would take so much from the game because our runs are built around this trick and many others. And quite frankly I use even when not speed running, just messing about. I see it as as a hidden move. Like mock ball for instance.

ark: Maybe I just don't mind holding run. It's not like you have to hold it 100% of the time.

Without some of these tricks the game might not be the game it is today. If everything is made well, less glitches. People may not still be playing like they still are. It's that same "bad" code that allows this level of breaking to keep the game still fresh.
One shall stand, one shall ball.

You do if you want to move at a speed that isn't slow.

Well you only need to press it for half a second to get to full speed before you get speedbooster, and a bit under 2 seconds after. You don't have to hold it the entire time. But I do agree that it would have made it a (extremely marginally) better game if you ran by default, and had to press a button to walk, or something like that.

lol how did this devolve into a SM controls bitchfest?

the controls are a big barrier to get into the game imo and require some time to get used to.
Because Nintendo has ignored the plight of people like me that have a love-hate relationship with Super on this most momentous occasion, the Metroid Series' 25th birthday.
I think I'll take the current controls over constant transmissions telling you exactly where to go next, invisible walls everywhere and tons of baby monologuing.

So will everyone, but I didn't think anyone seriously considered Other M to be part of the series anymore.

I'd take Super Metroid's run button and weapon switching over the 1000 beam specific doors that didn't need to be beam specific in Prime :P

I still do!

But yeah, I'm kinda disappointed at how Nintendo has once again glazed over Metroid in favor of Mario and Zelda. Sure they may be more successful overall, and I love those games dearly, but Metroid's been around just as long and was just as important at the start. (Referring of course to how Mario and Zelda got huge fanfares for their 25th anniversaries and Metroid isn't even mentioned. Probably because it would've clashed with Zelda's anniversary.)
kind of hard to remember metroid exists in a country where no one cares about it.

of course noa should have done something, but who knows how much independence they have. sega of america was more independent in the early 90s and that gave us the 32x.

I'd take something that only matters at some doors over something that matters the entire time you're playing the game. >_>

Fortunately, no one has to make that choice, since we have Fusion and Zero Mission.

we also have italics, apparently

Oh, is that what those "[i]" things are?  I just thought they looked good when I put them at the beginnings and ends of titles.
vugmer or someone on sda also does that and i'm not sure whether it's ironic. anyway it's pretty funny.

i read independece as incompetence in the other post. shows how much NoA does for the series.

NoA has been realy incompetent lately so it isn't a surprise there was nothing for the 25th anniversary.

What date was Metroid 1 first released in the US and UK?
I realized though that if it NoA is the one that will end up doing something, it might be next year since that's technically when Metroid arrived in the US. (August 87 I think)
Strategy Guide Writer
Anyone got an exact date in August?
I just quickly checked around a little. Metroid Database suggests August 15, 1987 in the US and January 15, 1988 in Europe. (And sometime in 1988 for Austrailia, but there's no date attached to it.)

man, you guys really hate other M huh? i knew it already, but didn't knew the hatred was so deep...

The more I think about it, the more I come to the uneasy conclusion that it killed the series.
