I just cant get into Paper Mario... It doesn't have the humor... And are we talking about "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars"? If so, yeah I like that one oodles more than paper mario. If not... Then... I don't know of any other mario rpg.... Well besides superstar saga.
Yeah, I think SMRPG is waaaay overrated. Past about Peach joining your party, it just becomes too repetitive. Not to mention that you can become all-but-literately invincible by Bowser's Castle.
RPG's like this need good battle systems, upgrades and stuff like that. Paper Mario only has 2 upgrades for each weapon. I also don't like how your HP goes up to 50, and attacks only do up to 6 damage. I like HP in the 1000's and attacks that do that much too. (100's is ok too) The bosses in PM aren't very hard either. MRPG bosses aren't either but the battles are more fun IMO. THe badges though are nice. They remind me of materia.
I love Mario RPG. And also, I thought the bosses were hard. The attacks were cool, and the fact that you could use bowser was pretty awesome. What a legendary game.

But, Mario RPG DIDN'T have a good system. Sure, you had a quite a few upgrades, but it was more like leveling up than actually gaining anything. And the battles needed no strategy at all, especially once you're off the ground. There was absoultely NO change in strategy in the entire second half, just whack whack whack on regular guys and whack magic heal on bosses.

You do have a point, but it has a great story and great humor. I'm not saying PM or ML don't have a good sense of humor either.
I'm not saying it's that bad... just sorta mediocre.
I actually thought that Paper Mario's low number damage points were a stoke of genius. Sort of, less is more. When it's a lot more clear how all your options work, strategy tends to play a lot bigger role. Stock enemies had varying defenses, so battle wasn't the same for everybody, and the bosses had a lot more variety, with their own unique strategies. Like comparing Fusion's give-and-take, hit the weakpoint right bosses to Super's missle-missle-missle-missle-missle bosses.
The fact that you can do up to 6 damage is no different than doing up to 600 or 6000 damage in other RPGs. Paper Mario just takes a no-nonsense approach and cuts off unnecesary digets. I mean, when your HP is in the 9000s, do you really care about single units of health?
I think it's kind of boring doing the same amount of damage every time. I like a little bit of randomness. With higher amounts of attack, you can have a wider range of damage to deal. Unless you could do 6.5 damage or 6.32 damage or something, but that's not the case. With randomness, you can't reallly tell if your next move will kill the enemy or if they will kill you. That's why I think battles with high damage like that are more difficult, because it's hard to subtract 1536 from 6845. (That part mainly applies to RPG's with ATB systems)
I'm sorry, but Mario RPG is not the greatest RPG of all time. That honor goes to Chrono Trigger. Don't get me wrong, SMRPG is still a good game. Chrono Trigger is just... well, better!
Humor! No random Battles! More Humor! Great story! Even more Humor!
sadly.. It was kinda not open ended :? You always had only one place to be and the only way to pass was in one specific manner.
And Space Station Silicon Valley! Humor! Fun! Action! Adventure! RPG...ish! Romance (if you haven't played it... It's an inside joke)! Constant Strategy and Puzzles! Open ENDED!

With a different developer that game coulda been amazing. It had a great concept. But the shoddy controls and often frustrating gameplay made it sub-par, imo. And the fact that they MADE you cheat to 100% the game is just the most retarded thing ever.

I still hold it in my belief that Uniracers is the best game that DMA has ever made. DMA is now currently known as "Rockstar North" amazing how a company can go from a 2d sidescrolling stunt based unicycle racing game... all the way to GTA3 and GTA:VC.
Anyway, my fave RPG overall is also chrono trigger, followed closely by Skies of Arcadia.

Is Rockstar North the one company that made the over popular game "Grand Theft Auto Vice City"?
