How does it compare to the more slick versions of 3, 4 and ZM and the more basic original Metroid?  The screenshots look more detailed than the original; is there a map system (or is one not needed - apparently it's quite linear?)?

The original doesn't appeal to me at all you see, due to the repetitive graphics and the ease of getting lost, and I'm looking to see how number 2 compares.  Is it more like the original or kind of like a simpler black and white Super Metroid (but is still good) ?  Kind of like Link's Awakening compared to A Link to the Past, being similar to it and far better than the other two titles that were on the NES.

Opinions?

If that's the case, you're probably going to hate MII.
radix's map ftw.

M2 was worse for getting lost but better for varied graphics imo.  I mean M1 was like, the exact same thing over and over and over.  M2 definitely has more variety.  Some reused room patterns perhaps, but it does feel like you move forward in the game.

Mister ...
OK, since I own this game and have beat the game with a perfect ending (God knows how...), this is a good topic, and here's my opinion...

The graphics compared to Metroid 1 were better.

Sound was better... almost.

The main problems about this game is
1) You are always going to get lost at somepoint.
2) there is no onscreen map to help you.
3) The evolving of the metroids scared the crap outta me at first, but you get used to it after awhile.
4) Half of the rooms look exactly alike the one before it, making people confused, and PO'd
5) There was nothing to help you find your way, making it harder NOT to get lost.
6) Only 5 energy tanks were available, and since OMEGA Metroids take alotta health, this really sucks.
7) TOO MANY VERTICAL CORRIDORS THAT WENT ON FOREVER!!!

Other than that, the game is overall pretty good, though I thought it could use a story line.

As posted in another forum, Metroid II Return Of Samus should have it's own remake, like Zero Mission.  But, I'm not counting on it.

If you do get the game (or own it and are starting to play it), prepare for a long game, and lots of "pwnge", and by that I mean you getting pwnd.

Either way, I wish you a happy Metroid hunting! :D
I really liked this game... I actually like it better than the other 2d games not named Super Metroid.

If you didn't like the original though, you'll probably hate this too... I never thought it was TOO bad though.

I'd LOVE to see a remake.

Just so you know: there is no map, and there is a need for one.
Meh, I figured it all out on my own without any maps... sure I had plenty of time spent in the exploration, but that's part of the fun, no? ;)
always move fast
i always thought that m2 was extremely linear.  like fusion only less annoying.

Still very possible to get lost unless you're experienced at this kind of stuff, though. Thankfully the Spider Ball means that you almost never can't retrace your path backwards. One-way paths make things really nasty. Of course, that's exactly what they throw in near the end...
Time bomb set get out fast!
With a little practice, you can easily tell where you are without a map.  It's hard the first couple of times, though.

Metroid II, like Zelda II, is the oddball of its series.  Many people don't like it.  But don't let that stop you from trying it out, because there are those who love it too.  I have a special place in my heart for Metroid II -- it was the game that got me into this series again, and it has a charm all its own.  Give it a try and you may find that charm too.

It is certainly my favorite Metroid game.

wow, nice speach.  The only thing I liked about MII was the evolution of the metroid.  That was fun! (though extremely difficult at times)
Graphics are a mixed bag. Samus' model and things like that show improved details but other things, like the larva metroids, look exactly like Metroid 1.

I agree that it is very linear, and that it is easy to get lost (the first couple times, of course). At least it had an easier save system, though.

And to nn, I believe there had been a story there. Did you seriously miss it? Metroids are evolving and you have to exterminate all but the hatchling. Apparently they already determined the amount of metroids in existence before Samus arrived.

Also, IIRC, the best ending is sub-3 hours. I could be mistaken, though.

I'm pretty sure MII uses the engine from Super Mario Land 2? It has the same 'floatyness' when you're in the air, and it even uses those 'used up ? block' blocks in several places.

I enjoyed MII but it took me a long time to beat it due to the getting lost part >.> I got pissed when MII DX seemingly dissapeared without a trace with no announcement etc. I remember seeing an announcement of its existence around the time links awakening DX came out, but it never materialized.

Hey, Metroid: Post Phazon Zero Mission might end up much better than M2RoSDX could ever be. Then again, LA had been close enough to DX quality before the DX version, leaving less room for improvement, so maybe RoSDX might have been beefed up more.

I'm not sure if it's seeing this forum get fresh posts, but I just got back into this game via emu last night. I got almost four hours for my fourth ever playthrough. >_<
