Hideo Kojima has been quite vocal about his aim to include lots of gameplay in the (many) preview clips for MGS: Peace Walker, citing it as a 'western' thing.
Maybe it is a Japanese thing, only really using cutscenes to sell games. I've only seen snippets of FFXIII gameplay, and I have little memory of any Twilight Princess gameplay before actually playing it myself. Other M seems to be following suit.
You know what was really cool? Prime 1 Samus, she looked like a person. Too bad short haired cutscene Samus probably won't last long, she looks sort of like a person too. It was pretty cool when Samus wasn't anime character 327.
qft!
MP Samus looked like a silent heroine as it should be and not like an underaged $%&$§whatever... And yes, the new look is definitely going into the right direction.

Dunno, but I find it annoying. It's great as a first teaser, so that you're aware it's in creation - particularly sequels. But after that, I want to know how it plays, so show me some gameplay, dammit!
Thing is, Mario games are nothing but gameplay. If they had narrative to the degree of even Twilight Princess, you can bet your ass the trailers would be primarily cutscenes and whatnot.
You'd think that if a developer was happy, and genuinely believed their game was good, then they would have no qualms about showcasing it. Since everybody is interested in how it plays, then it's the most logical thing to show, rather than FMV or cutscenes. The final Fantasies are notorious for showcasing FMV footage, and little gameplay. Mind you, with the recent outings, it may be no surprise. RPGs in general can be terrible for this, labelling videos as 'gameplay', and then just showing conversations.
I'd much rather see one minute of actual gameplay than ten minutes of the other stuff. As I mentioned before, one teaser to whet your appetite is a good idea, but afterward - gameplay, gameplay, gameplay for me.
