it's finally here. played for about 4 hours last night, and it seems like it's gonna be awesome. i'm not really at a point where i can judge much yet, still getting a feel for the game. it's awfully pretty, though, more so than i was expecting.

the crafting system seems like skyrim on steroids, definitely looking forward to making some cool shit. also love how they improved conversations ... holy shit they're not nearly as creepy anymore

It's definitely more cinematic feeling. I don't know if voicing the player character was truly necessary, but it's working out well enough. I'm playing a female and her VO is no Jennifer Hale, but she does a fine enough job.

The four dialogue options isn't as limiting as you'd think it would be.
red chamber dream
yeah i'm female too. i like how the dialog choices aren't what your character will actually say, but more of a summary (like "sarcastic", etc). kind of like the recent telltale games

I have Red Menace and Atomic Command so far. I need to find Grognak!

it's really cool, but i don't actually sit and play any of those games haha ... i just want to play fallout

True, but I love stuff like that. It reminds me of the minigames in Timesplitters 2 that you could play on your radar device. Anaconda was fun as hell.

Jesus, ghouls are no joke this time around. I just had my first encounter with a bright one (plus a mob of like 10 more which included a legendary, to be fair) and I barely made it though alive. Getting it alone only helped a little bit. I think I had an easier time with the mob of super mutants I fought afterwards, though I did bring my power armor and minigun along for that one, so that may have helped a bit.

So I may have encountered my first broken objective. I'm supposed to "Report to Paladin Danse" but he just loops generic dialogue. Progressing the main storyline may fix it from what I can find online, but if not I'm borked out of a companion until they patch it.
red chamber dream
i've definitely noticed some bugginess with dialog options. sometimes i'll be talking to someone and the subtitles freeze on one particular line, or sometimes multiple people will be talking and cut each other off. hoping for a patch soon ...

Yeah, I've had that same issue with the subtitles. It's pretty annoying.
red chamber dream
oh man the city building is pretty deep ... all i've done today is build up sanctuary to get that happiness

well, i explored some too, and robbed a couple random outposts. the shooting feels so much better than in 3 or new vegas; i barely use vats at all

Apparently they had the Doom guys at Id help them polish up the shooting. It definitely shows.

So I did end up getting Danse after some plot events. Luckily it's just the quest notification that's borked and not the actual quest itself.

Some silly stuff I found out that I haven't seen talked about a lot:

-When you bring up your Pip Boy, you can press the touch pad (change view button) to bring the screen in closer so that it cuts off the extra stuff on the side and takes up most of the TV. You can play the minigames like this as long as you zoom in before starting the game.

-If you press square (reload) on the loading screens, the 3D models go all green like you're in VATS mode.

-If you're at a settlement, you can drop weapons and armor on the ground and then go into build mode to scrap it instead of looking for the appropriate work bench.

-Some of the clothing layering is wonky. I found something called Super Mutant Chains which, when you equip them, will replace your clothes. However, if you put on a set of clothes with the Chains equipped (Brotherhood Uniform in my case) it will go over top and not unequip the Chains, giving you an extra layer of armor.

to your first three bullets - holy shit, nice! gotta try those tonight

I don't even know.

So I just found out exactly how dynamic this game is.

I was on my way to clear out a little settlement of baddies for a quest. Along the way, I found a little house with a pair of corpses that contained a letter that hinted at another quest. Upon arriving at my destination, I was blown to bits by errant explosives. Upon reloading at my auto save before fast traveling, I took the same path I did before. When I got to the little house, the corpses were gone and replaced by a mob of mirelurks. I took care of them and cautiously approached my destination, determined to avoid those grenades this time... only to find that the raiders were now engaged in a battle with the Brotherhood of Steel and were subsequently wiped out without any involvement from me.

Just nuts.

Also, I'm super confused about how settlements really work. I have Sanctuary Hills set up to accommodate about 30 people and a recruitment beacon set up, but the population never seems to get past 10, and most of those are companions I'm dumping there plus the default starting crew. Meanwhile I have a piece of shit settlement in the middle of raider territory that only has a radio beacon because I needed it for a quest, and it's constantly getting new people despite the happiness being around 20. It's a super convenient supply route hub, but it's still baffling.

hmm my sanctuary population's at 13, but i'm intentionally trying to grow it. what i did was build more beds than people + a lot more water, food, power, and defense than people
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
That's what I did. I have enough beds, food, water, and defense for 30 people. Maybe I need a few more generators?

Or maybe Strong is scaring everybody away. I need to send him somewhere else anyway, he just stands around hating me whenever I mod my weapons.
red chamber dream
idk who strong is. i need to find more companions ... still palling around with codsworth, and he's a fucking tool who always gets in my way.

i love him because he takes out enemies super quickly, but i'm thinking about switching to dogmeat so i can use the lone wanderer perk.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
Dogmeat still counts as a companion as far as lone wanderer is concerned.

I'm collecting companions like pokemon but I still have several more to find. You get bonus perks for getting max affinity with each one, so I aim to do that. I've only maxxed one dude so far, and he's a guy who likes it when you pick locks and hack terminals, which I do all day, so that was pretty easy.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
And I dunno if you care about knowing the specifics, but Strong is:

A super mutant who has been led to believe discovering humanity will make him stronger, but still doesn't hide his contempt for humans. He's kind of awesome and I want to use him, but he hates it when you do anything "smart," which includes modding weapons, using power armor, or picking locks/hacking terminals. And I haven't discovered what he likes yet. Probably punching stuff, and I'm not doing melee at all, so he's going to be tough.

really? from what i've read online this is not true

ah yep, some are saying it's probably a bug though
