I believe you need to have gotten fair enough in the main quest to have been to the Institute in order to get far enough with the BoS for it. There's a point with all the factions where you can't go further until you go to the Institute.

I just got to that point myself.

I think the Brotherhood radiants are better for experience grinding, if I remember right. Minutemen quests are good for building affection for almost every companion though.

I think the end is somewhat in sight for me. I finally recruited the last companion, and he and Strong are the only affinities to max out (and I'm probably not going to bother with Strong because fuck Strong and fuck melee). I think I'll have to pick a faction soon and I still haven't decided. I'll probably take a break from quests to try to explore the map some more.

As a head's up, there's a point in the Brotherhood questline where if you talk to this one guy, you will be enemies with the Railroad with no warning. It happens just after the thing with Danse. Elder Maxson will tell you to talk to a guy, and that guy will tell you to do some things, and apparently just by hearing his words the Railroad hates you forever. It's before the official point of no return so it's a little annoying. Just never talk to that guy and you're fine though.

It would have popped up a notification in the upper left corner if you did... assuming they didn't glitch out and not display like they sometimes do.

I forget the name of the quest at the moment, but if he asked you to murder basically everyone in the Railroad, then that's the one.

Welp, I'm now enemies with the Brotherhood. I can still pick between the Institute and the Railroad and I still haven't made up my mind, but I think the end is definitely in sight. I think I've got close to the full map marked off too; 308 locations, according to my PipBoy. I've heard someone say they've gotten up to 320-something, but I'll be damned if I can find any more blank markers.
