I believe it would.

You could use the exact same controls as GC. Only problem with this is that there's no C-Stick. Just hit select and the D-Pad will switch between visors and beams. Map could be on the touchscreen instead of hitting Z.

The graphics would have to be tremendously watered down. I don't think to the point of MP:H but pretty severely watered down.

Enemies would have to get new textures as well.

Cutscenes could just be movie ports from GC disk. Or re-done, whichever works.

No 3D. That would take up too much space. No Multiplayer for Prime 2. No galleries, any extras. Besides Fusion Suit. That needs to stay. Sure, these can stay if space is found to put them in.

What do you guys think? DO you think it could work?

With today's technology, I think it's definitely possible to re-create sixth generation graphics onto seventh and eight generation handheld and mobile devices. However, at this point, I'd rather that Nintendo and Retro Studios just continue working on whatever they have planned for the Metroid series and give us SOME indication of what it's going to be.

It's been 4 years since the last Metroid game, but it feels like fourteen :P

Ok, I can understand not liking Other M, but Prime 2 and 3? I LOVE those games.

cool. i don't!
Prime 2 is the best in the trilogy.  And there will be another cool metroid game.  I have to believe that they will learn from 'Metroid: Other Mistake' by realizing that retro understands what's cool about metroid and whats-his-face-ancient-japanese-guy does not. I have to fall in love with a new metroid game at least once more before I die.
to be fair, prime 2 is a good game compared to prime 3. prime 3 put me to sleep.

This is demonstrably false.
I did enjoy Prime 3 too. It took me a little while to get attached to Bryyo and Elysia unlike Tallon IV and Aether which I fell in love with the minute I turned on the game, but overall I felt like it was a nice wrap-up to the Phazon Crisis.

i liked it ok when i played it, but i remember almost nothing from that game and my opinion of it has increasingly soured over the years. it's a) not a metroid game, and b) not good at being the type of game it tries to be
Honestly, I'd love to play Prime 1 on the 3DS.
The controls wouldn't even have to change from the Gamecube. A to fire, B to jump, X to Morph Ball, Y for Missiles/Power Bombs, L for locking on, R for free aim.

The only thing would be the D-Pad. I think D-Pad could switch between choosing visors and beams by simply hitting select. Hit select to change from beams to visor, and vice versa for visor to beam.

I'd love having a good 3D Metroid game on the handheld for anywhere.
I agree with the controls. The only problem could be the resolution, but since Smash 3DS looks at least just as good as Brawl at half the resolution it might work for Prime as well.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Putting Metroid Prime on a tiny baby screen would be a travesty.
Club 27 Goals
ironically though it would be at a higher resolution than the original!

Still on a bitch screen, don't mattaaaaaaaaa!
Yeah the 3DS is 240p, half the resolution of the GCN

it really sucks how the 3ds has such awful resolution

i mean it's fucking 2014
But then Nintendo can make the next handheld 480p 3D and claim it a revolution
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Come on now, 360p. Let's not get crazy.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
The Vita has a high resolution and as we can all see it's doing very well with lots of upcoming games.
red chamber dream
the vita does actually have lots of games and gets new ones all the time - it's mostly niche indie stuff i don't care about though

that's why the playstation tv looks cool i can pay only $100 to play the couple vita games i was interested in

Why not just make an original FPS Metroid on the 3DS that uses beam stacking to forgo the need for a C-stick and work from there?
