That's because it hasn't loaded the enemies yet.  In Other M, the rooms loads while you're in it sorta.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
There's really no excuse for that though. There should never be a point where you are practically forced into taking damage because the devs couldn't be bothered to make the camera not shit.
You could still dodge.

Ehh, I had trouble with those points as well, but there were so few and they were never THAT hard that I never thought much of the,
One shall stand, one shall ball.

you shouldn't have to worry about dodging things you can't see because the camera says so.

Oo, got one. Samus is allowed to disobey Adam, but she permanently loses 1 HP off her max each time.

Regarding the Varia issue... Adam is monitoring five other guys, remember? He was looking someplace else and Samus didn't call and ask. My theory is he had no idea Samus was so stupidly loyal that she'd turn off even purely defensive upgrades. When he finally checks in on her, she's fighting a lava monster without heat protection, and he -- though outwardly calm as usual -- is mentally going "WTF IS SHE INSANE?"
Phoenix
Even after Adam was dead she didn't turn the Gravity Suit on until she absolutely needed it to avoid getting sucked out into space.

I also love how the game doesn't tell you you can use a Power Bomb to blast the queen. You, as a player, are supposed to go "fuck Adam" and try to use one anyway.
I actually figured out the power bomb thing immediately as if by instinct, but suddenly wondered how many people would be stuck by that.  Surprisingly, I didn't see one single person make a post saying that they were stuck, so it seems like they somehow made you take that initiative.  I don't know how they did it.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
The whole authorization thing is just far too flawed to rationalize any part of it. It requires you to believe Adam is a heartless prick and a tactical buffoon, and Samus is a spineless yes-girl and also a buffoon, both points directly contradicted by the game's own story.

An example that doesn't seem to get brought up a lot: the infamous 'any objections, Adam' part. Samus is basically giving Adam the finger there, yet she still only activates the bare minimum of her equipment. Why the fuck, if she's sticking it to Adam anyway, wouldn't she turn the whole fucking suit on?

I agree that at that point they should've just turned on the whole suit (maybe except Power Bombs for the idea that she didn't want to burn MB to a crisp).  They don't handle the equipment in this game all that well.  Maybe she was thinking 'nah, I don't need the Gravity Suit right now' but she should've turned it on for the first Nightmare fight.  The weapon authorizations seemed okay to me, though.

Did it seem okay that Adam authorized his own squad to use weaponry equivalent to Samus's (ice beams and Anthony's plasma cannon) far before he authorized Samus to use her gear? He basically comes across as an unprofessional dick who puts Samus's life in danger just to establish the size of his cock.

You CANNOT rationalize ANY authorization from a story perspective. It's just always retarded.

Oh, I'm not rationalizing them.  I think the authorization thing is stupid.  But I didn't really have a problem with the weapon ones in terms of how they were rolled out.  It's just a game mechanic that doesn't work out like they thought it would.

Weren't the only items after Space Jump/Screw Attack the Gravity Suit and Power Bombs anyway? Most of it is on by the time she does that.

But yeah, I'll still agree that the item authorization was poorly implemented because they tried to have it make sense from a story perspective when it clearly doesn't. This is a time where story sense was overridden by gameplay sense.
After going through the story (for my own twisted, crazy reasons) I get the feeling that they were supposed to build up this 'Adam's a dick to Samus' premise a bit more.  He says 'sorry I was a bit rough on you'.  Maybe I'm just trying to grasp straws here, but at the beginning at least it was clear that Adam didn't like having Samus there, and thought she was dangerous to his crew.

Power Bombs: I died about 10 times on the queen before realising that they had activated.  Frustrating stuff.
I like turtles.
I guess it was simple to me, having played Metroid II.  You used bombs to finish the Queen off there, but that was before Power Bombs existed.  Now the perfect chance arises in Other M.  I've always wondered what would happen if Samus had Power Bombs for the Queen battle.
ANKOKU
Having seen the 2 ways to beat Metroid 2, I knew about a Bomb tactic as well. But I was baffled when Bombs did shit to her and I had exhausted all my other "authorized" abilities that I could use at that time.

First time I tried a PB I actually started the charge too late and died before I could set it off.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Yeah, I knew about the queen in RoS, but I laid no end of bombs in the hope of doing damage.  It didn't change the fact that there were no hints at all.  Since it showed you the other abilities being activated, why not just show Power Bombs too?
I like to go fast!
I never played Metroid II,  and I was confused for a bit when I first fought the queen.  I died a bunch of time till I finally gave up and tried a PB.
Phoenix
Took me a couple tries of just using normal bombs like in Metroid II. When that clearly wasn't working, I knew the only other thing you could possibly attack with in ball form was good old PBs. The lesson here is to always chew your food.

Samus is basically giving Adam the finger there

Nah, it's a hilarious moment, but that's not the point of it. Remember why she's following the guy? She's lost contact with Adam and thinks she may have to save him. Thus, it's safe to assume he won't mind.

As for authorization, I don't think it's completely indefensible. Just put yourself in Adam's position -- you're on a critical mission and who should barge in but an ex-soldier of yours with the power of a small army. Planets explode when she's around. What's more, you suspect there are bioweapons on this station, and you know that's a hot button of hers. Fortunately, she still has great respect for you. What do you do? You'd better believe you level the playing field a bit.

Where it all falls down, of course, is the authorizing of individual items. A sensible Adam would let her use the whole suit when in immediate danger -- and then make her turn it back off when the danger passes. And after one of your men dies, no more messing around about protocol; you need Samus's power.
Phoenix
Not to mention there's no justifiable reason for ever ever making her turn off the Varia and Gravity. And on top of that, not letting her turn Varia on as soon as he tells her to go to the super-heated area.

Time bomb set get out fast!
Oh, as for the Power Bombs... don't even talk to me. I must have died 30 times trying to use normal bombs. Frankly, I think people who haven't played Return of Samus have a better chance here; I've played it to death and that's why I thought normal bombs would work. I even died a couple more times after I thought of trying a PB because you have to press fire after you enter her stomach; you can't be holding it from before the cutscene.

There's no excuse for not making this one clear the way they did with every other powerup. I love Other M, but this is one of the mistakes I'm maddest about. (Another is making it completely unclear what you're supposed to do in the final mob scene. I spent half an hour dying to the Desbrachians because I assumed you were supposed to win. It was only by accident that I targeted MB and triggered the ending.)
