ok, on my nbmb i got up to 83%.  though, for some reason, the file select screen shows only 81%, so two things were never i counted.  i assume one is the gravity suit, and dunno what the other would be...maybe a powerbomb expansion or something.

If you collect all 4 PB expansions but not the main PB, it only counts as 1% not 4%... so, I think you counted wrong.  Wink

hm...that could be a possibility too. =p
I decided to test the no Varia thing in the Newborn tunnel myself so I could have a definite answer, and the phazon does indeed damage you. I jumped in the phazon everywhere I could in the game, and it damages you the same, regardless of not having Varia Suit.

As for the NBMB, what counts as not fighting a boss? Can you do whatever you want as long as you don't kill them? Or must you not activate them? If you can activate them, then you should still be able to get the missile expansion in MQA, simply by going there before you get the plasma beam. If you cannot activate any bosses, then you still might be able to get it, by coming from PPC and climbing the room with the Elite Pirate a different way. I don't know if it's possible to bypass the Invisible Drone without activating it or not.

Anyway, I don't actually want to do a NBMB run, but I wouldn't mind trying to solve a couple things.

well, you can get the missile expansion if you go there before plasma.  however, the door in central dynamo locks as you are leaving.  ive gotten very close to escape, even managed to shoot the door open before the lock could appear as i jumped to the ledge, but i dont think there is anyway around it.  and of course, if you go there after plasma, there is the elite pirate in the room beforehand..

There's an MP1 NBMB topic on SCU:

http://www.samusforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=50

There's plenty of discusison regarding what should be acceptable fights wise etc. Also, a SW-assissted NBMB run would give you a much higher % as well, as you can collect items in secretized rooms, and you could also collect the Energy Tank behind OP vis SW's and Door Warping. As far as I'm aware, via using SW's, you can get into the 90%+ mark.
everybody knows it's true
How does one get the phazon suit/beam without fighting Omega though?
always move fast
you dont... the point of nbmb is to get the highest percent possible, without fighting any bosses or minibosses, so you never actually finish the game.
Since I will never be that good at dashing, there is no way I can ever pull that off.  Wink That was nuts...

How is it that you guys can make things look easy, when in reality they are too hard for the normal player to accomplish? I guess it's just the sort of thing that brings the rest of us back here all of the time.  :D

in this case, doing it well is a side product of just doing it.

Someone (I believe it was either BoostR or LC103) had mentioned that in Phazon Mining Tunnel, the phazon damage programming is a bit screwy if you go there with only Power Suit. As I recall, only the area of phazon immediately around the artifact damages you, and as you're only there for a moment or two it's inconsequential.

I've done it with AR, I killed OP and went for the artifact, but the game decided that I didn't really have the Phazon Suit, and i took damage at the end of the tunnel. SO as far as i can tell, whoever told you that was correct.

Now I'm confused.  We seem to be getting conflicting results here.  I wonder if this is due to a version difference.  sj13, which version of Prime do you play?  Maybe this glitch is something that Retro fixed in later versions (PAL, PC) of Prime.  If that's not it, then I'm just left doing this:  :?
When I did no-varia I distinctly remember ALL the phazon being damaging. I ESPECIALLY remember it hurting in Mining Tunnel(?) since the AR people said it didn't... But it did!
at this point evidence seems to suggest that WITH the use of action replay, the phazon WILL NOT damage you in only the power suit except at the very end of the tunnel.

WITHOUT using action replay, e.g. using the ice beam before flaahgra secret world method or if you are smilingjack13 or bartendorsparky, all phazon WILL hurt you.

i should also mention that people should be reporting whether they've collected the gravity and/or phazon suits before they do these tests.

What happens if you skip flaahgra by skipping the varia, then come up the sun tower? Do you fight the ghosts or do you fight flaahgra?  :?

with gravity + without varia, the phazon in the tunnel still hurts you.

and if you comeup suntower, the ghost fight will be there, but the flower wont be, so you need to use somekind of bombjump to get the artifact, iirc.

And the ONLY way to get back up the suntower without spiderball is a wallcrawl from SW9 (Main Plaza) and a series of bomb jumps and a door warp at the top.

Then either a Ghetto off one of the roots or a 3bjm into the artifact will allow you to collect it.
I did not have the gravity suit or phazon suit when I was taking damage from the phazon. Still just the power suit. And I was playing the original NTSC version.
I made three videos all somewhat pertaining to Varialess runs and NBMB runs.

The first one is, IMO, quite a big discovery. I figured out how to climb Suntower from the bottom without spider ball. It's not very useful though... The only uses I see for it is to add a percent to a NBMB run or to possibly skip an item on a Varialess low percent run. It wouldn't work in a speed run because it takes like 6 minutes. You have to use one of those weird floaty spots to float up above the gate. However, this floaty spot isn't nice like in some of the other parts of the game. You only seem to go up if you hold a perfect direction on the control stick (somewhere near upperleft the way I did it). And you don't go up forever. However, when I didn't kill the war wasps, and they continually rammed into me, it seemed to give me upwards acceleration. Assuming you can't float all the way up without using the wasps, I'm really not sure how many tanks you would need. Perhaps you could do it on 3 or 4 tanks if you only leave one or two wasps alive, and then this could still be used on a Varialess low percent run. Anyway, regardless, it's still a cool discovery.

Sorry about blowing the unmorph. I guess I just got anxious and came off the wall too early.  :(  You get the idea though.

The second video I made is of skipping the cutscene in the Mines of the Elite Pirate breaking out of his tube. You just have to come from PPC then do this:

http://www.metroid2002.com/smilingjack13/skipping_elite_pirate_cutscene.avi

This probably isn't useful at all, unless activating Elite Pirates isn't allowed on NBMB runs.

Finally, I decided to leave Sunchamber as I killed the last ghost in the Artifact of Wild battle, just to see what would happen. It messes up the following cutscene pretty badly. If you can go far away enough for Sunchamber to be completely dumped, I wonder what would happen then...

http://www.metroid2002.com/smilingjack13/blacked_out_sunchamber.avi

Note that you can only do this if you skip Varia Suit, since the door going to Aboretum is covered with vines otherwise.

That is all.

EDIT: I managed to dump Sunchamber before the cutscene started. It turns out that nothing happens and you just redo the ghost battle the next time you go in.

wow @ suntower.  its crazy things like that that make prime how it is today.  very sweet job there.

as for the elite pirate thing, i skipped it a different way in my run.  jump on the computer like you did, then, on top of the glass on the pirate's tank, a tad left of the center, is a standable ledge.  jump to that, then over to the circle thing.  you cant jump right to the platform because there is an invisible wall.

and weird ghost thing, reminds me of chykka.
Unless I'm very much mistaken, Smilingjack is really just kip with a new username.

Think about it: have you ever seen the two of them in the same room together?

Shocked  Shocked

DAMN! That's some sweet findings SJ13!  Shocked  8) I'm especially impressed by the Suntower floating trick. Very cool. I still reckon it'd be quicker to wall crawl from SW9 and bombjump up suntower from a SW state ad door warp in mind, but hey, this is still quality for those who just don't like to use SWs. (PAH! wussys! ;) :P)

Never thought to try leaving the room before when I was moonjumping up the tower before flaahgra. Nice find there as well. But I suck (hard) at the HBJ, so I'll not be using THAT method to skip the pirate! :P

Congrats SJ13. :D
i thought sparky was the new kip.

hmmm ... maybe he split in half or something. go asexual reproduction.

anyway, nice work, as always, s.jack. :D (your dvds are coming soon ...)
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Jack, you rock.
where is kip anyway? He hasn't updated his page for a month also. Very strange, it seems he has ceased playing metroid prime

I tried that, with a low% run. I decided to kill all the wasps, didn't want to die. You can go up even without the wasps, and with some joystick movement (up-left mainly) you go higher faster. I was able to move upwards in 6-7 sec compared with the same part of the video which took 1 min or so (it was time for dinner by that moment, so I had to turn off the Cubo).

I guess time & energy shouldn't be a stop for your discovery.
Awesome. I'd love to see how you do it.  :)
